Numerous forms of psychotherapy have demonstrated effectiveness for individuals with specific mental disorders. It is, therefore, the task of the clinician to choose the most appropriate therapeutic approach for any given client to maximize effectiveness. This can prove to be a difficult task due to at least three considerations: (1) there is no treatment approach, method or model that works well on all patients, even within a particular diagnostic class; (2) several treatments are equally efficacious (i.

Brain Health Imaging Centre, Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, Toronto, Ontario, Canada; Addictions Division, Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, Toronto, Ontario, Canada; Campbell Family Mental Health Research Institute, Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, Toronto, Ontario, Canada; Department of Psychiatry, University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, Canada; Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, Canada; Institute of Medical Science, University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Electronic address:

Background: Reductions in fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH), the catabolic enzyme for the endocannabinoid anandamide, may play a role in drinking behavior and risk for alcohol use disorder. We tested the hypotheses that lower brain FAAH levels in heavy-drinking youth are related to increased alcohol intake, hazardous drinking, and differential response to alcohol.

Methods: FAAH levels in the striatum, prefrontal cortex, and whole brain were determined using positron emission tomography imaging of [C]CURB in heavy-drinking youth (N = 31; 19-25 years of age).

Article Synopsis
  • Emergency Department visits for substance-related issues among young people in Ontario are rising, necessitating an understanding of factors contributing to repeated visits (two or more per year) to improve mental healthcare effectiveness and reduce ED burden.
  • A study using data from 2008, 2013, and 2018 found notable increases in repeated visits (from 12.52% in 2008 to 20.19% in 2018), with factors such as young adult age, male gender, urban hospital location, long wait times, and severity of symptoms linked to more frequent visits.
  • The study indicates that addressing repeated ED visits could be achieved through improved mental health and addiction services in under-served areas, along with targeted programming for patients

Article Synopsis
  • Δ9-Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is linked to driving impairment, but research shows mixed results about how it affects driving performance.
  • This study examined the relationship between THC levels in blood, urine, and saliva and driving behavior, specifically looking at "weaving" using a driving simulator.
  • Although no clear linear relationship between blood THC and driving impairment was found, it was observed that higher THC levels (above legal limits) in blood and saliva were associated with increased "weaving" compared to a placebo.
  • Further research is required to determine effective THC thresholds for assessing driving impairment.

Background: Acquired brain injury (ABI) is a serious problem that disproportionately affects individuals in correctional services, but relatively little is known about ABI risks and correlates in forensic psychiatric services.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective chart review of all admissions to a high secure forensic hospital in Ontario, Canada from January 2009 to December 2012 ( = 637) and collected data on ABI, psychiatric diagnoses, developmental disadvantage, criminal offending, and in-hospital aggression. A means cluster analysis was employed to assess risk factors by which men with ABI could be identified and multivariate general linear models were used to identify ABI-related differences in offending history and in-hospital aggression.

Sex Differences in the Neuropsychiatric Effects and Pharmacokinetics of Cannabidiol: A Scoping Review.

Biomolecules

October 2022

Translational Addiction Research Laboratory, Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, University of Toronto, 33 Ursula Franklin Street, Toronto, ON M5S 2S1, Canada.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-intoxicating cannabinoid compound with diverse molecular targets and potential therapeutic effects, including effects relevant to the treatment of psychiatric disorders. In this scoping review, we sought to determine the extent to which sex and gender have been considered as potential moderators of the neuropsychiatric effects and pharmacokinetics of CBD. In this case, 300 articles were screened, retrieved from searches in PubMed/Medline, Scopus, Google Scholar, PsycInfo and CINAHL, though only 12 met our eligibility criteria: eight studies in preclinical models and four studies in humans.

October 2022

Waypoint Research Institute, Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care, 500 Church Street, Penetanguishene, Ontario, L9M 1G3, Canada,

Background And Aims: Given the ongoing opioid crisis, novel interventions to treat severe opioid use disorder (OUD) are urgently needed. Injectable opioid agonist therapy (iOAT) with diacetylmorphine or hydromorphone is effective for the treatment of severe, treatment-refractory OUD, however barriers to implementation persist. Intravenous buprenorphine for the treatment of OUD (BUP iOAT) has several possible advantages over traditional iOAT, including a safety profile that might enable take-home dosing.
