Cyanobacterial blooms in lakes have increased in frequency and intensity over the past two decades, negatively affecting ecological and biogeochemical processes. This study focuses on the phytoplankton composition of Lake Maggiore, with a special emphasis on cyanobacteria detection through pigment composition. While microscopy is the standard method for phytoplankton identification, pigment-based methods provide broader spatiotemporal coverage.

The global decline in insect biomass has far-reaching implications for terrestrial and freshwater food webs, impacting species reliant on insects as a crucial component of their diet. This issue extends to species traditionally considered agricultural pests, such as the common cockchafer . In the race to combat cockchafers through collection, insecticide use, and other control methods, the repercussions of their numerical fluctuations on predators, including species of high conservation importance like bats, have been largely overlooked.

The aims of this study were to investigate the presence, possible sources, and potential ecological risks of synthetic musk fragrances in freshwaters and sediments of the main tributaries of a deep subalpine lake in Northern Italy. The total musk concentrations ranged from few ng L up to values > 500 ng L, depending on river characteristics: water flow and the presence of wastewater effluents proved to be the main factors affecting fragrance concentrations. The water flow may indeed dilute fragrance input mainly deriving from treated wastewaters.

Fish stocking constitutes a common management practice in freshwaters all over the world, to enhance fisheries or to support threatened fish populations. Pervasive detrimental effects may affect the real effectiveness of stocking programs. However, studies assessing the real impacts and relative contribution of stocked trout in wild populations are surprisingly few.

Seas and oceans are a global reservoir of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Only a few studies investigated the dynamics of ARGs along the water column of the Black Sea, a unique environment, with a peculiar geology, biology and history of anthropogenic pollution. In this study, we analyzed metagenomic data from two sampling campaigns (2013 and 2019) collected across three different sites in the Western Black Sea at depths ranging from 5 to 2000 m.

The effects of the COVID-19 lockdown on deposition and surface water chemistry were investigated in an area south of the Alps. Long-term data provided by the monitoring networks revealed that the deposition of sulfur and nitrogen compounds in this area has stabilized since around 2010; in 2020, however, both concentrations and deposition were significantly below the average values of the previous decade for SO and NO. Less evident changes were observed for NH and base cation.

Lake tributaries collect contaminants from the watershed, which may accumulate in lake sediments over time and may be removed through the outlets. DDx, PCB, PAH, PBDE, and trace element (Hg, As, Cd, Ni, Cu, Pb) contamination was analyzed over 2001-2018 period in sediments of the 5 main tributaries and of the outlet of Lake Maggiore (Northern Italy). Sediment cores were collected in two points of the lake, covering 1995-2017 period.

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) are worldwide considered as emerging contaminants of large interest, and a primary threat to human health. It is becoming clear that the environment plays a central role in the transmission, spread, and evolution of antibiotic resistance. Although marine systems have been largely investigated, only a few studies have considered the presence of ARGs in meso- and bathypelagic waters.

Determination of 20 PFASs in a fish species (Alosa agone) of commercial interest has been carried out in five Italian subalpine lakes to assess the risk for humans and predators for fish consumption. PFOS still presents the highest concentrations (0.9-16.
