Neurovascular coupling (NVC) and neurometabolic coupling (NMC) provide the basis for functional magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography to map brain neurophysiology. While increases in neuronal activity are often accompanied by increases in blood oxygen delivery and oxidative metabolism, these observations are not the rule. This decoupling is important when interpreting brain network organization (e.

Case: We present a case of a 66-year-old man with lumbar vertebral body erosions after glue embolization of a Type II endoleak secondary to endovascular repair of an infrarenal aortic aneurysm. Multiple biopsies of the affected vertebrae were culture-negative confirming no evidence of infection. He underwent posterior spinal fusion from L2 to L5 with complete resolution of mechanical low back pain and improved functional outcomes.

Enterotoxigenic (ETEC) cause hundreds of millions of diarrheal illnesses annually ranging from mildly symptomatic cases to severe, life-threatening cholera-like diarrhea. Although ETEC are associated with long-term sequelae including malnutrition, the acute diarrheal illness is largely self-limited. Recent studies indicate that in addition to causing diarrhea, the ETEC heat-labile toxin (LT) modulates the expression of many genes in intestinal epithelia, including carcinoembryonic cell adhesion molecules (CEACAMs) which ETEC exploit as receptors, enabling toxin delivery.

Background: Whether use of SGLT2 inhibitors reduces the risk of cardiovascular and kidney events in people who contracted SARS-CoV-2 infection is not clear.
Methods: We used the healthcare databases of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs to build a cohort of 107,776 participants on antihyperglycemic therapy and had SARS-CoV-2 infection between March 01, 2020 and June 10, 2023. Within them, 11,588 used SGLT2 inhibitors and 96,188 used other antihyperglycemics.

Context: For many, the perception of "hospice" is synonymous with "death." Even clinicians struggle to have conversations that distinguish between hospice and palliative care for fear that discussing hospice may diminish hope. To date, there are no existing measurement tools to evaluate patient and family perceptions of hospice care.

Researchers in biomedical research, public health and the life sciences often spend weeks or months discovering, accessing, curating, and integrating data from disparate sources, significantly delaying the onset of actual analysis and innovation. Instead of countless developers creating redundant and inconsistent data pipelines, BioBricks.ai offers a centralized data repository and a suite of developer-friendly tools to simplify access to scientific data.

The OpenOximetry Repository is a structured database storing clinical and lab pulse oximetry data, serving as a centralized repository and data model for pulse oximetry initiatives. It supports measurements of arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2) by arterial blood gas co-oximetry and pulse oximetry (SpO2), alongside processed and unprocessed photoplethysmography (PPG) data and other metadata. This includes skin color measurements, finger diameter, vital signs (e.

Homeostatic regulation of neuronal activity is essential for robust computation; set-points, such as firing rate, are actively stabilized to compensate for perturbations. The disruption of brain function central to neurodegenerative disease likely arises from impairments of computationally essential set-points. Here, we systematically investigated the effects of tau-mediated neurodegeneration on all known set-points in neuronal activity.

Background: Kidney transplant recipients are at higher risk of infections due to immunosuppression, especially in the perioperative period after receiving induction therapy. Administration of iron has been linked to bacterial infections. This study investigated if receipt of intravenous iron at the time of kidney transplant increased bacterial infections post-transplant.

Objective: To investigate whether parenting or neonatal brain volumes mediate associations between prenatal social disadvantage (PSD) and cognitive/language abilities and whether these mechanisms vary by level of disadvantage.
Study Design: Pregnant women were recruited prospectively from obstetric clinics in St Louis, Missouri. PSD encompassed access to social (eg, education) and material (eg, income to needs, health insurance, area deprivation, and nutrition) resources during pregnancy.

Introduction: Patients with triple-class refractory (TCR) multiple myeloma (MM) often need cytoreductive chemotherapy for rapid disease control. Bendamustine is an outpatient-administered, bifunctional alkylator and isatuximab is an anti-CD38 monoclonal antibody with unique cytotoxicity characteristics. We hypothesized that isatuximab-bendamustine-prednisone would be well-tolerated regimen in TCR MM, and conducted single-center, phase Ib, investigator-initiated study.

Objective: Surgical resident schedules are demanding. Despite ACGME requirements that residents be able to attend personal appointments, many residents put off essential health tasks due to work hours. We designed a method for surgical residents to request a "flex" or personal day utilizing an online system for requesting and tracking.

Microstructures of additively manufactured metal parts are crucial since they determine the mechanical properties. The evolution of the microstructures during layer-wise printing is complex due to continuous re-melting and reheating effects. The current approach to studying this phenomenon relies on time-consuming numerical models such as finite element analysis due to the lack of effective sub-surface temperature measurement techniques.

Purpose: We sought to develop an artificial intelligence (AI)-based model to predict early recurrence (ER) after curative-intent resection of neuroendocrine liver metastases (NELMs).
Methods: Patients with NELM who underwent resection were identified from a multi-institutional database. ER was defined as recurrence within 12 months of surgery.

Background: A combination of intravenous (IVT) or intra-arterial (IAT) thrombolysis with mechanical thrombectomy (MT) for acute ischemic stroke due to large vessel occlusion (AIS-LVO) has been investigated. However, there is limited data on patients who receive both IVT and IAT compared with IVT alone before MT.
Methods: STAR data from 2013 to 2023 was utilized.

Background: Second victim syndrome (SVS) is described as when health care providers encounter significant moral distress after traumatic patient care events. Although broadly recognized in medicine, this remains underrecognized in surgery and no systemic approaches exist to mitigate potential harms of SVS amongst surgeons. When SVS is left unaddressed, surgeons not only suffer personal psychological harm but their ability to care for future patients can also be compromised.

Importance: Black or African American (hereinafter, Black) and Hispanic or Latino/a/x (hereinafter, Latinx) adults are disproportionally affected by Alzheimer disease, but most research studies do not enroll adequate numbers of both of these populations. The Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative-3 (ADNI3) launched a diversity taskforce to pilot a multipronged effort to increase the study inclusion of Black and Latinx older adults.
Objective: To describe and evaluate the culturally informed and community-engaged inclusion efforts to increase the screening and enrollment of Black and Latinx older adults in ADNI3.

Objectives: Hypocomplementaemia is common in patients with IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD). We aimed to determine the IgG4-RD features associated with hypocomplementaemia and investigate mechanisms of complement activation in this disease.
Methods: We performed a single-centre cross-sectional study of 279 patients who fulfilled the IgG4-RD classification criteria, using unadjusted and multivariable-adjusted logistic regression to identify factors associated with hypocomplementaemia.
