Fission-fusion social systems allow individuals to make flexible choices about where, with whom, and in what contexts to spend their time in response to competing social and ecological pressures. The ability for fission-fusion societies to support individual behavioral strategies that vary across contexts has been suggested, but the potential function of such context-specific social choices remains largely understudied. We adopted the concept of social niche construction to explore possible differences in social complexity at the individual and group level across feeding contexts.

Disparities in surgical outcomes often result from subjective decisions dictated by surgical training, experience, and available resources. To improve outcomes, surgeons have adopted advancements in robotics, endoscopy, and intra-operative imaging including fluorescence-guided surgery (FGS), which highlights tumors and anatomy in real-time. However, technical, economic, and logistic challenges hinder widespread adoption of FGS beyond high-resource centers.

Background: Over the last two decades, significant research interest has led to the development of a wide variety of supraglottic airways (SGAs) for anaesthesia providers to choose from.
Methods: In this network meta-analysis, we analysed 111 studies, enrolling 12 045 patients undergoing airway management with 29 SGAs. We targeted outcomes that contribute to clinicians' choice of one SGA over another.

Background: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) has a profound public health impact. However, understanding of the molecular mechanisms that underlie the development and progression of AUD remains limited. Here, we investigated AUD-associated DNA methylation changes within and across 2 addiction-relevant brain regions, the nucleus accumbens and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex.

Background: Quantification of cardiac motion on pre-treatment CT imaging for stereotactic arrhythmia radiotherapy patients is difficult due to the presence of image artifacts caused by metal leads of implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs). The CT scanners' onboard metal artifact reduction tool does not sufficiently reduce these artifacts. More advanced artifact reduction techniques require the raw CT projection data and thus are not applicable to already reconstructed CT images.

Anti-phage defenses must rapidly sense and respond to diverse viruses. A recent pair of papers in Nature reveal via structural and functional assays how the PARIS defense system, a recently discovered toxin-antitoxin system, senses phage-associated molecular patterns (PhAMPs), thereby activating an endonuclease toxin that cleaves tRNA to block phage replication.

Diversity increases toward the tropics, but the strength of this pattern diverges with thermoregulatory strategy. Synthesizing over 30,000 species distributions, we quantified patterns of richness in terrestrial vertebrates, and present evidence for a latitudinal gradient of community composition. We observe a two orders of magnitude shift in comparative diversity with temperature, from endothermic mammal and avian dominance near the poles, toward ectothermic reptile and amphibian majority in the tropics.

Malignant melanoma outcomes have drastically changed in recent years due to the introduction of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). However, many patients still experience intolerable side effects, therapy resistance, and disease progression on ICI therapy. Therefore, there remains a need for novel therapeutics that address this gap in treatment options.

The HEALthy Brain and Child Development (HBCD) Study, a multi-site prospective longitudinal cohort study, will examine human brain, cognitive, behavioral, social, and emotional development beginning prenatally and planned through early childhood. The longitudinal collection of biological samples from over 7000 birthing parents and their children within the HBCD study enables research on pre- and postnatal exposures (e.g.

Background: Regenerative electrodes are being explored as robust peripheral nerve interfaces for neuro-prosthetic control and sensory feedback. Current designs differ in electrode number, spatial arrangement, and porosity which impacts the regeneration, activation, and spatial distribution of fibers at the device interface. Knowledge of sensory and motor fiber distributions are important in optimizing selective fiber activation and recording.

Damage control laparotomy (DCL) has a high risk of SSI and as an attempt to mitigate this, surgeons often leave the skin open to heal by secondary intention. A recent retrospective study showed that DCL wounds could be closed with the addition of wicks or incisional wound vacs with acceptable rates of wound infection. The aim of this prospective trial was to corroborate these results.

Monitoring the environment for prospective memory (PM) targets can be attentionally demanding, such as searching for a pharmacy to pick up medication while driving in traffic. It is therefore optimal to increase monitoring in contexts when the probability of encountering a PM target is high (e.g.

Background: A higher number of recanalization attempts reduces the efficacy of endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) for acute ischemic stroke secondary to large vessel occlusion (LVO). We assessed the impact of switching EVT techniques after a failed first pass on procedural and clinical outcomes.
Methods: This multicenter international study, conducted between January 2013 and December 2022, included patients undergoing EVT for anterior circulation LVO (internal carotid artery or M1 segments) with failed first pass recanalization.

Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy has revolutionized the treatment of hematologic malignancies, offering remarkable remission rates in otherwise refractory conditions. However, its expansion into broader oncological applications faces significant hurdles, including limited efficacy in solid tumors, safety concerns related to toxicity, and logistical challenges in manufacturing and scalability. This review critically examines the latest advancements aimed at overcoming these obstacles, highlighting innovations in CAR T-cell engineering, novel antigen targeting strategies, and improvements in delivery and persistence within the tumor microenvironment.

While there is growing recognition of the importance of traditional knowledge in science, these perspectives remain underrepresented in research publications. However, the synthesis of these approaches has tremendous potential to improve our understanding of wildlife and ecosystems. Toward realizing this aim, we combined local traditional knowledge with molecular classification techniques to investigate "soil scratching" behavior in western lowland gorillas in two localities in Republic of Congo, the Goualougo Triangle and the Djéké Triangle.

Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) cause hundreds of millions of cases of infectious diarrhea annually, predominantly in children from low-middle income regions. Notably, in children, as well as volunteers challenged with ETEC, diarrheal severity is significantly increased in blood group A (bgA) individuals. EtpA, is a secreted glycoprotein adhesin that functions as a blood group A lectin to promote critical interactions between ETEC and blood group A glycans on intestinal epithelia for effective bacterial adhesion and toxin delivery.

UvrD-family helicases are superfamily 1A motor proteins that function during DNA replication, recombination, repair, and transcription. UvrD family monomers translocate along single stranded (ss) DNA but need to be activated by dimerization to unwind DNA in the absence of force or accessory factors. However, prior structural studies have only revealed monomeric complexes.
