Objective: Health decision-making is influenced by perceived health risks and benefits. Greater understanding of these perceptions in college students, a population engaging in high rates of risky cannabis use, is needed. The primary aim of the current study was to examine both perceived risks and benefits of cannabis for short- and long-term health consequences and how these perceptions relate to cannabis use and related problems.

The analgesic effects of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary psychoactive compound in cannabis, have been widely promoted. Unfortunately, animal research is limited by the use of high doses and pain-evoked tests. Motor and psychoactive effects of THC may suppress evoked responses in the absence of antinociceptive effects.

Despite the increasing demand for nurses in geriatrics, interest lags in working with older adults. The Carolina Opinions on the Care of Older Adults instrument assesses attitudes toward older adults, with one subscale assessing intention to work with older adults. The instrument was used in a pretest/posttest study with prelicensure students enrolled in a gerontological nursing course.

Questions of how to sustain interest in the history of medicine and broader health sciences (HOM/HS) in a changing institutional environment, and how to collaborate with stakeholders to offer activities to do so, are on the radar for many academic health sciences centers and their libraries. This essay is an initial exploratory study of non-curricular HOM/HS efforts at United States medical schools ranked in the top thirty in primary care or research. In 2019, we collected public information pertinent to any presence of an on-campus HOM/HS community and the group's structure, including funding, activities, and the library's involvement with the group.

Background: Despite considerable differences in national work-family (WF) policies offered in countries around the world, research concerning the implications of such policies for employee reactions to work-family and family-work conflict (WFC/FWC) is limited.

Objective: The current study examines the contextual role of country-level national WF policies as a moderator of the relationships between individual-level WFC/FWC and job stress, job satisfaction, turnover intentions, organizational commitment, and general health.

Methods: Using archival data sources, the ISSP Work Orientations Survey (2015) and the WORLD Policy Analysis Center Adults Labor Database (2014), multilevel analyses tested the predicted cross-level interaction effect in a sample of 49,637 individuals (54% female; Mage = 48 years) nested across 36 countries.

While technological advancements have proliferated in our daily lives, they also pose threats to the job security of employees. Despite these growing concerns about technology-related job insecurity, little research has been carried out on the antecedents and outcomes of tech-related job insecurity. Using a cross-sectional, nationally representative survey sample of 28,989 Korean workers drawn from the Korean Working Conditions Survey, we examined the impacts of technology advancements on employee perceptions of technology-related qualitative job insecurity (i.

The rhizosphere has been called "one of the most complex ecosystems on earth" because it is a hotspot for interactions among millions of microbial cells. Many of these are microbes are also participating in a dynamic interplay with host plant tissues, signaling pathways, and metabolites. Historically, breeders have employed a -centric perspective when trying to harness the potential of microbiome-derived benefits to improve productivity and resilience of economically important plants.

Past research attests to the pivotal role of subjective job insecurity (JI) as a major stressor within the workplace. However, most of this research has used a variable-centered approach to evaluate the relative importance of one (or more) JI facets in explaining employee physical and psychological well-being. Relatively few studies have adopted a person-centered approach to investigate how different appraisals of JI co-occur within employees and how these might lead to the emergence of distinct latent profiles of JI, and, moreover, how those profiles might covary with well-being, personal resources, and performance.

Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Washington State University Vancouver, Vancouver, WA 98686, USA.

In this paper, we investigate the bifurcations of solutions to a class of degenerate constrained optimization problems. This study was motivated by the Information Bottleneck and Information Distortion problems, which have been used to successfully cluster data in many different applications. In the problems we discuss in this paper, the distortion function is not a linear function of the quantizer.

Sex differences in the impact of pain, morphine administration and morphine withdrawal on quality of life in rats.

September 2022

Department of Psychology, Washington State University Vancouver, 14204 NE Salmon Creek Ave., Vancouver, WA 98686, United States of America. Electronic address:

The disruptive effects of pain on quality of life are greater in men than in women, but the disruptive effects of opioid administration and withdrawal tend to be greater in women. These sex differences in pain, acute opioid effects, and opioid withdrawal tend to be opposite to sex differences reported in laboratory rats. We hypothesized that sex differences in humans and rats would more closely align if animal research measured quality of life as opposed to traditional evoked behaviors of pain (e.

Worry as a mechanism of the relationship between perceived new knowledge and discouragement to smoke elicited from graphic cigarette warnings.

J Behav Med

October 2022

Psychological Sciences, School of Social Science, Humanities, and the Arts, Merced. Merced, University of California, Merced, Merced, CA, USA.

Evidence supports the use of graphic warnings to educate the public about the health harms of smoking and suggests warnings eliciting negative emotional responses may be more effective. This study aimed to replicate a preliminary theory-based model whereby perceived new knowledge promotes discouragement from smoking through its impact on worry about smoking with a different sample and using a new set of cigarette graphic warnings. We explored if the pattern extended to encouragement to use e-cigarettes, and if age and user group moderated the indirect effects of these models.

Zebrafish are an emerging model organism to study the syndromic albinism disorder, Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome (HPS), due to visible pigment development at 24 hours postfertilization, and conserved melanogenesis mechanisms. We describe crasher, a novel HPS type 10 (HPS10) zebrafish model, with a mutation in AP-3 complex subunit delta gene, ap3d1. Exon 14 of ap3d1 is overexpressed in crasher mutants, while the expression of ap3d1 as a whole is reduced.

Deterministic lateral displacement (DLD) is a microfluidic method for the continuous separation of particles based on their size. There is growing interest in using DLD for harvesting circulating tumor cells from blood for further assays due to its low cost and robustness. While DLD is a powerful tool and development of high-throughput DLD separation devices holds great promise in cancer diagnostics and therapeutics, much of the experimental data analysis in DLD research still relies on error-prone and time-consuming manual processes.
