3D imaging of proximal caries in posterior teeth using optical coherence tomography.

Sci Rep

September 2020

Department of Cariology and Operative Dentistry, Graduate School of Medical and Dental Sciences, Tokyo Medical and Dental University, Tokyo, Japan.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) can create cross-sectional images of tooth without X-ray exposure. This study aimed to investigate the diagnostic accuracy of 3D imaging of OCT for proximal caries in posterior teeth. Thirty-six human molar teeth with 51 proximal surfaces visibly 6 intact, 16 slightly demineralized, and 29 distinct carious changes were mounted to take digital radiographs and 3D OCT images.

Purpose: Bisphosphonates reduce bone metastases in postmenopausal women with early-stage breast cancer but carry the risk of bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ). We describe risk factors for BRONJ and compare BRONJ provoked by infection or trauma with spontaneous lesions, which carry a better prognosis.

Methods: SWOG 0307 randomized women with stage I-III breast cancer to receive zoledronic acid (ZA), clodronate (CL), or ibandronate (IB) for 3 years, implemented BRONJ prevention guidelines, and collected information about dental health and development of BRONJ.

Can Patients With Isolated Mandibular Fractures Be Treated as Outpatients?

J Oral Maxillofac Surg

November 2020

Assistant Professor, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Boston, MA. Electronic address:

Purpose: Treating mandibular fractures urgently is controversial. The purpose of this study was to estimate and compare the rates of postoperative inflammatory complications (POICs) in patients with isolated mandibular fractures treated in a nonurgent manner by an outpatient protocol versus a traditional, urgent inpatient protocol.

Patients And Methods: We implemented a retrospective cohort study and enrolled a sample of patients with isolated mandibular fractures treated with open reduction-internal fixation (ORIF).

Focused Clinical Question: With the 2018 AAP/EFP disease classification with the staging and grading systems, does risk assessment for different ethnic group result in a different focus for clinical needs? This comparative analysis aimed to assess two previously reported cohort studies in African-American (Af-A) and Asian-American (As-A) as to the risk for these two populations for clinical attachment loss (CAL) and gingival phenotype.

Summary: In comparison of As-A and Af-A cohorts, As-A had higher frequency of thin tissue phenotype, less width of keratinized gingiva (KGW), and more gingival recession (GR). On other hands, Af-A showed higher prevalence of thick phenotype, longer total tooth length and root length (RL).

How Can Clinicians Limit the Risk of Peri-implantitis?

Compend Contin Educ Dent

Affiliate Assistant Professor, Restorative Department, University of Washington School of Dentistry, Seattle, Washington; Adjunct Assistant Professor, Advanced Education Program in Prosthodontics, Loma Linda University School of Dentistry, Loma Linda, California; Affiliate Associate Professor, Graduate Periodontics, Oregon Health and Science University School of Dentistry, Portland, Oregon; Private Practice, Bellevue, Washington.

When using dental implants as a treatment modality for tooth replacement, the integration of peri-implant soft tissue is an extremely important consideration. Numerous systemic risk factors for peri-implant disease are known to be associated with peri-implant soft tissues. The soft-tissue connection provides a barrier seal directly to the implant or implant abutment and plays a critical role in limiting peri-implant disease.

Statement Of Problem: Automixing and dispensing cements is a straightforward approach with consistent dosing. Previous studies have demonstrated clinically significant differences in crown retention between power-liquid and paste-paste forms of the same cement, as the composition between the 2 differs. A self-adhesive modified-resin (SAMR) and a resin-modified glass ionomer (RMGI) cement, originally offered as a powder-liquid, are now in common use as paste-paste automixed cements.

Bone Health Management After Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation: An Expert Panel Opinion from the American Society for Transplantation and Cellular Therapy.

Biol Blood Marrow Transplant

October 2020

Division of Clinical Research, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle, Washington; Department of Medicine, University of Washington, Seattle, Washington.

Bone health disturbances commonly occur after hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) with loss of bone mineral density (BMD) and avascular necrosis (AVN) foremost among them. BMD loss is related to pretransplantation chemotherapy and radiation exposure and immunosuppressive therapy for graft-versus-host-disease (GVHD) and results from deficiencies in growth or gonadal hormones, disturbances in calcium and vitamin D homeostasis, as well as osteoblast and osteoclast dysfunction. Although the pathophysiology of AVN remains unclear, high-dose glucocorticoid exposure is the most frequent association.

Treatment of orbital floor fractures is predicated on the restoration of orbital volume to prevent enophthalmos or hypoglobus. Globe position is the result of a complex interplay between the bony orbital anatomy and the soft tissue envelope. Studies on orbital fractures have frequently suggested criteria for repair on the basis of bony defect size or volume change.

Purpose: Coronectomy is performed to avoid injury to the inferior alveolar nerve when mandibular third molars (M3s) in close proximity to the inferior alveolar nerve are indicated for extraction. Concern has been raised regarding the fate of submerged roots with exposed pulp tissue and whether this will serve as a nidus for infection. The study purpose was to answer the following clinical question: Among patients undergoing coronectomy, do those treated with concurrent root canal treatment (RCT), when compared with those not treated with RCT, have a decreased frequency of postoperative infections? The specific aims of this study were to 1) perform a comprehensive review to compare postoperative infection rates in M3 coronectomies with and without concurrent RCT and 2) review relevant animal and human studies pertaining to pulpal physiology as it relates to coronectomy.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of applying the polymer-induced liquid-precursor (PILP) method to enhance silver diamine fluoride (SDF) therapy. One hundred forty micrometer deep artificial caries lesions were treated with (A) 38% SDF solution and (B) 38% SDF containing poly-L-aspartic acid (pASP). Changes in the nanomechanical profile across the lesion were evaluated.

Purpose: Sagittal split osteotomy (SSO) of rami with fused cortices or minimal marrow space above the lingula can increase the risk of an unfavorable osteotomy split of the proximal ramus. To reduce the risk of a proximal segment fracture, a recent modification of the SSO places the medial horizontal osteotomy below the lingula. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the outcomes of SSOs utilizing a low medial horizontal osteotomy in patients with atypical ramus morphologies.

Shear Bond Strength of Glass Ionomer Cement to Silver Diamine Fluoride-Treated Artificial Dentinal Caries.

Pediatr Dent

May 2020

Dr. Stefan Habelitz is a professor, Department of Preventive and Restorative Dental Sciences, University of California, San Francisco, Calif., USA;, Email:

The purpose of this study was to measure the shear bond strength (SBS) of glass ionomer cement (GIC) to artificial carious dentin with and without silver diamine fluoride (SDF) treatment. Permanent molars were sectioned and demineralized to create artificial carious lesions. In five groups, the demineralization of dentin, application of SDF, use of conditioner, and elapsed time between the placement of SDF and restoration were tested for differences in SBS using an UltraTester machine.
