Background: We evaluated the survivorship, incidence of complications, radiological subsidence, proximal stress shielding, and patient-reported outcomes of a conservative, monoblock, hydroxyapatite-coated femoral stem.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study reports on 254 revision hip arthroplasties between January 2006 and June 2016. The mean age of patients was 71 years.

Background: Radiofrequency denervation is used to treat selected people with low back pain. Recent trials have been criticised for using a sub-optimal intervention technique.

Objectives: To achieve consensus on a best practice technique for administering radiofrequency denervation of the lumbar facet joints to selected people with low back pain.

However, there is limited research exploring this experience from the mother's perspective.

Background: Single-stage reconstruction is used widely after mastectomy. Prepectoral implant placement is a relatively new technique. This multicentre audit examined surgical outcomes following prepectoral reconstruction using acellular dermal matrix (ADM).

Global variation in the long-term outcomes of ypT0 rectal cancers.

Background: Colorectal cancer mortality presents world-wide variation. In rectal cancers presenting a complete/nearly-complete tumor response (ypT0/ypTis) following neoadjuvant treatment, the features correlated to nodal metastases and relapses still need to be defined.

Methods: An international cohort study enrolling ypT0/ypTis rectal cancers surgically treated from 2012 to 2017 was conducted.

Predicting adequacy of free quadriceps tendon autograft, for primary and revision ACL reconstruction, from patients' physical parameters.

Purpose: Free quadriceps tendon autograft (QTA) has gained popularity for both primary and revision ACL reconstruction. The aim of this study is to measure the dimensions of quadriceps tendon and determine its correlation with patient's height, weight and BMI. This is to provide a guide for patients and surgeons in predicting the suitability of QTA for ACL reconstructions.

Discussing sexual activities after total hip arthroplasty.

Background: Hip pathology can affect functions including sexual activity. Sex after hip replacement (SAHR) is an important subject for patients but rarely discussed. A conversation prior to surgery can be difficult to initiate, and appropriate advice is then not given.

National prospective cohort study of the burden of acute small bowel obstruction.

Background: Small bowel obstruction is a common surgical emergency, and is associated with high levels of morbidity and mortality across the world. The literature provides little information on the conservatively managed group. The aim of this study was to describe the burden of small bowel obstruction in the UK.

Introducing early and structured rehabilitation in critical care: A quality improvement project.

Objectives: To assess the potential impact of introducing an already established and effective programme of rehabilitation within a critical care unit in a different organisation.

Lasers are fast becoming the vogue of dermatology ranging from ablative, nonablative, fractional photothermolysis to vascular lasers. There are a range of vascular lasers including potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP 532 nm), pulsed dye laser (PDL -595 nm), diode (810 nm), and Nd:YAG (1064 nm). PDL is a laser that emits yellow light using Rhodamine dye as it is lasing medium.

Background: We present a distinctive type of acquired vascular proliferation, for which we propose the name of poikilodermatous plaque-like hemangioma.

Objective: The aim of this study was to summarize the clinical and histopathologic features in a case series of poikilodermatous plaque-like hemangioma.

Methods: Sixteen cases were identified from the routine clinical and referral practices of the authors.

Background: Decisions to admit high-risk postoperative patients to critical care may be affected by resource availability. We aimed to quantify adult ICU/high-dependency unit (ICU/HDU) capacity in hospitals from the UK, Australia, and New Zealand (NZ), and to identify and describe additional 'high-acuity' beds capable of managing high-risk patients outside the ICU/HDU environment.

Methods: We used a modified Delphi consensus method to design a survey that was disseminated via investigator networks in the UK, Australia, and NZ.

Background: Patient selection for critical care admission must balance patient safety with optimal resource allocation. This study aimed to determine the relationship between critical care admission, and postoperative mortality after abdominal surgery.

Methods: This prespecified secondary analysis of a multicentre, prospective, observational study included consecutive patients enrolled in the DISCOVER study from UK and Republic of Ireland undergoing major gastrointestinal and liver surgery between October and December 2014.

The clinical relevance of sound changes produced during cementless hip arthroplasty: a correctly sized femoral broach creates a distinctive pattern of audio frequencies directly related to bone geometry.

Aims: Cementless femoral stems must be correctly sized and well-seated to obtain satisfactory biological fixation. The change in sound that occurs during impaction of the femoral broach is said to indicate good fit, but this has not been widely studied. We set out to find whether the presence or absence of these sound changes could predict correct sizing.

The Warwick Experience of the Oncotype DX® Breast Recurrence Score® Assay as a Predictor of Chemotherapy Administration.

Introduction: Oncotype DX® analyses the expression of 21 genes within tumour tissue to determine a Recurrence Score® (RS). RS is a marker of risk for distant recurrence in oestrogen receptor-positive early breast cancer, allowing patient-specific benefit of chemotherapy to be evaluated. Our aim was to determine whether the introduction of Oncotype DX led to a net reduction in chemotherapy use.
