We investigated the adipogenic effects of high-fat diets with different fat sources, as well as their influence on hypothalamus NPY content (NPY) and plasma corticosterone (Cs) and leptin (Lep) concentrations. In a 6-wk experiment performed in 28 male Wistar rats, high-fat diets (approx 60% of energy as fat) containing sunflower oil (S), rapeseed oil (R), palm oil (P), or lard (L) as the fat source were applied. Carcass composition was analyzed by standard methods; NPY, Cs, and Lep were determined by RIA method.

Apoptosis during ectromelia orthopoxvirus infection is DEVDase dependent: in vitro and in vivo studies.

Microbes Infect

May 2002

Immunology Laboratory, Division of Virology, Mycology and Immunology, Department of Preclinical Sciences, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Warsaw Agricultural University (SGGW), Ciszewskiego 8, Poland.

Ectromelia virus (EV), which causes mousepox, is a member of the orthopoxviruses that are defined as being able to suppress apoptosis. Caspase-3 is one of the key effector proteases which regulates the apoptotic cascade and which is responsible for DNA fragmentation observed during apoptosis. It is well known that viruses, especially poxviruses, can inhibit caspase activity.

November 2001

Department of Dietetics and Functional Foods, Faculty of Human Nutrition and Consumer Sciences, Warsaw Agricultural University-SGGW, ul. Nowoursynowska 166, 02-787 Warsaw, Poland.

Polyunsaturated fatty acids of the omega-3 series, especially very long chain--eicosapenta- and docosahexaenoic acid (EPA, DHA)--exert a strongly desirable influence on health. However, their intake with the western-style diet is usually too low which favours development of many diseases (CVD, cancers, allergies, etc.).

Polyunsaturated fatty acids of omega-3 series (omega-3 or n-3 PUFA), especially long chain EPA and DHA, exert strong positive influence on human health. Intake of these fatty acids is however usually too low: that brings many unfavourable health effects to the whole populations. Therefore the increased consumption of omega-3 fatty acids is recommended.

The objective of these studies was to assess the intracellular calcium (Ca2+) signal involved in the activation of ectromelia virus (EV)-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) upon stimulation with EV-sensitized (A20) target cells or concanavalin A (Con A). The CTL originated from mice previously infected with EV. The level of cytosolic Ca2+ in EV-specific CTL was measured using Fluo-3 AM.
