BALB/c mice infected with the Moscow strain of Ectromelia virus (ECTV-MOS) show a large number of apoptotic cells, and an influx of lymphoid cells in the epithelium and substantia propria of conjunctivae, respectively. The presence of ECTV-MOS antigens in the epithelium of conjunctivae significantly upregulates Fas in the epithelial layer and FasL in the suprabasal layer of conjunctiva. Inhibition of FasL with blocking antibodies in cultures of conjunctival cells isolated from ECTV-MOS-infected BALB/c mice showed that the Fas/FasL pathway is important in apoptosis of ECTV-MOS-infected cells.

The initial phase of muscle differentiation depends on the activities of protein kinases including phosphatidylinositol-3 kinase (PI-3K), the extracellular signal-regulated kinases ERK1/2 (p42 and p44), and p38 kinase. Myogenesis is also characterized by an apoptosis-resistant phenotype of myotubes. The effects of inhibitors of the above-mentioned protein kinases on myogenesis from C2C12 mouse myoblasts and on muscle cell apoptosis were examined individually over 5 successive days.

This paper is intended to demonstrate to nutritionists, dietitians, paediatricians and other health care professionals as well as parents, primary and secondary school authorities, nutritional concerns pertaining to the consumption of soft drinks. High intake of soft drinks is associated with: 1) overweight or obesity because of the intake of additional calories in the diet; 2) increased risk of osteoporosis due to displacement of milk consumption, resulting in calcium deficiency and subsequent bone resorption; and 3) increased risk of dental caries and potential enamel erosion. School officials and parents should be aware of the health implications of vended drinks in schools before making a decision about pupils' and students' access to them.

Previously, we reported that mitogenicity in L6 muscle cells was stimulated by insulin but inhibited by reactive oxygen/nitrogen species (ROS/RNS; []) and that preincubation with sodium ascorbate (ASC) protected from either the impaired DNA synthesis and/or loss of cell viability. Now, we addressed the question how ascorbate (AA) rescued DNA synthesis in L6 muscle cells being challenged with ROS/RNS. We assumed that AA might be able to influence insulin signaling.

The tumour suppressor p53 plays a key role in DNA damage and repair. It is the most frequently altered gene in human cancers and these mutations may implicate the genesis and/or progression of tumours. Mutations of the p53 gene were also found in a number of canine cancers, although it is poorly estimated in canine lymphomas.

Alkaline metal, calcium and magnesium p-iodobenzoates and alkaline metal nicotinates, as well as sodium and potassium picolinic and isonicotinates were investigated by means of their antimicrobial and chemical properties. The quality estimation of the influence of metal cation coordinated to the carboxylic anion of the series of studied compounds on their antimicrobial activity as well as on the vibrational structure of whole complex in water solution was done. The changes in antimicrobial properties and in charge distribution of the complex along the position of nitrogen atom in the aromatic ring in sodium and potassium complexes were investigated.

The presented studies embraced samples of wood chips from coniferous trees which contained layers of duramen, alburnum and bark. Microbiological analysis involved qualitative and quantitative determination of bacterial flora inhabiting the studied wood material. The wood chips were found to contain primarily species belonging to the genera Bacillus and Pseudomonas.

Automated amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) and randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) techniques with fluorescently labelled primers were used to track differences among isolates of the eight known species of the Bordetella genus. Eighty-one representative strains of these species from international and Polish bacterial collections were genotyped according to RAPD protocols using primer 1254 or 1247, and AFLP involving EcoRI/MseI or newly designed SpeI/ApaI restriction/ligation/amplification procedures. By comparing AFLP and RAPD data, it was concluded that the discriminatory power of AFLP is higher in comparison with RAPD for both intra- and inter-species differentiation of isolates of the Bordetella genus.

Two pairs of primers were prepared, both localized within the sequences of the nucleoprotein gene (NP) of canine distemper virus (CDV). A number of experiments were done to optimize the conditions of RT-PCR and nested PCR methods. The nucleic acids of the Onderstepoort, Rockborn, Snyder Hill and Lederle strains of CDV could be detected with these primers.

The decline of mammary epithelial cell (MEC) number during mammary gland involution in the cow is due to inhibition of proliferation and induction of apoptosis. Transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-beta1) belongs to a group of intramammary auto/paracrine inhibitors of bovine MEC growth and inducers of apoptosis. However, the mechanism responsible for the regulation of TGF-beta1 expression in MEC is not known.

Isolations of polymorphic sequences of two pairs of the NIL lines of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.), which differ with respect to sex, were carried out using the subtraction hybridization methods of DSC (Differential Subtraction Chain) and GDDSC (Genetically Directed DSC). 266 DSC tags were isolated from the entire genome region, and 38 GDDSC tags were isolated from the region containing the sex genes.

Somatic embryogenesis in cucumber cell suspension culture is a convenient tool to study differential gene expression, particularly during the early stages of this process. In this study, we used the cucumber somatic embryogenesis system to detect genes that were differentially transcribed during the induction of embryo development. We identified and cloned 120 candidate cDNA fragments from differential display gels.

The aim of this study was the evaluation of gastric epithelial cell proliferation rate in connection with the gastric Helicobacter-like organisms (GHLO) infection in dogs. The study was performed on samples of the gastric mucosa obtained during necropsies from 60 dogs euthanasized for various reasons. Microscopic preparations were stained with the hematoxylin-eosin method, Giemsa method, Warthin-Starry silver method and immunohistochemical method (MIB-1 antibody) to investigate the expression Ki67 antigen.

The activity of the upper gastrointestinal tract is periodic. It concerns the gastrointestinal and gallbladder motility, gastrointestinal blood flow, gastric, intestinal, pancreatic and biliary secretions, rate of nutrient absorption, and many other physiological events. Nowadays, the periodic activity of the gastrointestinal tract is considered as a basic physiological pattern in conscious animals and humans.

Smac/DIABLO, a pro-apoptotic protein released from mitochondrial intermembrane space during apoptosis, promotes caspase activation by IAPs neutralization. The kinetics and molecular mechanism of Smac/DIABLO release from mitochondria has remained obscure. Homeostatic confocal microscopy, for the first time, showed the precise kinetics of Smac/DIABLO release from mitochondria during CPT-induced apoptosis in living MCF-7 cells.

TGF-beta 1 is an antiproliferative and apoptogenic factor for mammary epithelial cells (MEC) acting in an auto/paracrine manner and thus considered an important local regulator of mammary tissue involution. However, the apoptogenic signaling pathway induced by this cytokine in bovine MEC remains obscure. The present study was focused on identification of molecules involved in apoptogenic signaling of transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-beta 1) in the model of bovine mammary epithelial cell line (BME-UV1).
