Oogenesis in pig ovaries during the prenatal period: ultrastructure and morphometry.

Oogenesis in fetal pig ovaries comprises the successive changes from the primordial germ cells to the dictyotene oocytes in primordial ovarian follicles. In this study the observations were carried out with an electron microscope and stereological analysis was performed. At the ultrastructural level there are no differences between the primordial germ cells and oogonia, but oogonia are connected with the intercellular bridges.

The aim of our study was to determine the expression of various isoforms of clusterin and to evaluate how etoposide or calcium chelators [ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid and (2-aminoethoxyethane)-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid] affect the subcellular expressions of the 50-kDa isoform of clusterin protein in colon adenocarcinoma COLO 205 cells. We then determined how the cytoplasmic vs. nuclear expression of the 50-kDa isoform of clusterin correlates with the viability of COLO 205 cells.

Hematological changes during the course of canine babesiosis caused by large Babesia in domestic dogs in Warsaw (Poland).

In the presented study we evaluated the hematological changes in samples of blood obtained from 248 dogs naturally infected with large Babesia. The evaluation included red blood cell count, hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), leucocyte counts, thrombocyte counts, mean platelet volume (MPV), morphology of erythrocytes and leucogram. The most common disorders in affected dogs were thrombocytopenia and anisocytosis.

Parthenogenetic activation of domestic cat oocytes using ethanol, calcium ionophore, cycloheximide and a magnetic field.

The objective of this study was to evaluate parthenogenetic activation of domestic cat oocytes after being exposed to either ethanol, magnetic field, calcium ionophore A23187, or cycloheximide and a combination of these agents. We also wished to evaluate the usefulness of the magnetic field for oocyte activation. In vitro matured oocytes subjected to artificial activation were randomly assigned into eight groups according to activating agents: (1) 10% ethanol; (2) the magnetic field (slow-changing, homogenous magnetic field with low values of induction); (3) 10% ethanol plus magnetic field; (4) 10 microM calcium ionophore A23187; (5) 10 microM calcium ionophore A23187 plus magnetic field; (6) 10% ethanol and 10 microg/mL of cycloheximide; (7) 10% ethanol and 10 microg/mL of cycloheximide plus magnetic field; (8) oocytes were not exposed to any of the activating agents.

Acanthocephalan Moniliformis moniliformis is a parasite of rodents, rarely also reported from carnivorous mammals. One female specimen of this parasite has been found in the small intestine of red fox Vulpes vulpes. It is the first report about this species invading the red fox in Poland.

Loss of dehydration tolerance coincides with a shift from heterotrophy to autotrophy during post-germination growth of spring wheat seedlings. This critical stage falls on the fifth day following imbibition. Till the sixth day of experiment light had no effect on dry weight of the seedlings but the survival of six day old seedlings was reduced by half upon dehydration.

Mitofusin 2 (Mfn2): a key player in insulin-dependent myogenesis in vitro.

We have previously shown that mitochondrial activity increases in response to insulin in differentiating muscle cells. Moreover, the protein kinase kinase/extracellular-signal-regulated kinase (MAPKK/ERK-MEK) inhibitor PD98059 accelerates insulin-mediated myogenesis, whereas the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3-K) inhibitor LY294002 or blockade of mitochondrial respiration abrogates insulin-mediated myogenesis. Our present study focuses on the mitochondrial transmembrane protein, hyperplasia suppressor gene/mitofusin2 (HSG/Mfn2), which regulates both mitochondrial fusion (as demonstrated by perinuclear mitochondria clustering) and insulin-dependent myogenesis in vitro.

Growing rats fed for 3 months a low-protein (LP) diet (4.5% of energy from protein), possessed about 29% lower body weight than animals consuming adequate-protein diet (20% energy from protein). The LP diet feeding caused an increase in daily feed intake followed by a decrease in feed conversion efficiency.

Material And Methods: Twelve wild and two domestic species of carnivorous mammals are living in Białowieza Forest. In our work faeces or intestines of all of them except ermine (Mustela erminea) have been examined and parasites or their eggs (or oocysts) recorded.

Pseudomonas beijerinckii (type strain DSM 7218(T)=ATCC 19372(T)=NCIMB 9041(T)) was isolated from salted beans and was first described by Hof in 1935. 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons demonstrated its close relatedness (>97-99 %) to species of the genus Chromohalobacter. A recent isolate from salted herrings originating from the Baltic Sea, strain 3b, also clustered phylogenetically within this genus.

ALCAM/CD166 protects breast cancer cells against apoptosis and autophagy.

This report is the first evaluation of ALCAM/CD166 in an estrogen-dependent (MCF-7) and a metastatic (MDA-MB-231) breast cancer cell line and a reference breast cell line (HBL-100). The effects of estrogen and anti-estrogen treatment, bcl-2 overexpression, and ALCAM gene silencing on ALCAM/CD166 protein concentration and cell survival were investigated.

Background: Activated Leukocyte Cell Adhesion Molecule (ALCAM) is expressed in different kinds of normal and neoplastic tissues. Data on the tissue distribution of ALCAM suggest that this protein is involved in tumor progression and metastasis. Ageing in humans is accompanied by a reduction in the capacity of satellite cells to proliferate and the forming myoblasts to fuse. The processes of myoblast differentiation and fusion are associated with specific changes in the cells electrical properties.
