Background Fragility fractures, often caused by osteoporosis, are a major public health concern among the growing population of the United Kingdom (UK). In addition to being a major source of illness and mortality, the rising incidence of osteoporosis places a heavy strain on healthcare systems if it is not adequately managed. In order to lower the risk of additional fractures, current guidelines place a strong emphasis on the timely evaluation and treatment of fragility fractures.

The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to assess the efficacy of the biodegradable temporising matrix (BTM) (NovoSorb; PolyNovo Biomaterials Pty Ltd, Port Melbourne, Victoria, Australia) in the reconstruction of complex upper extremity wounds. The authors conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis as per the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines assessing the efficacy of BTM in complex upper extremity wound reconstruction. The primary outcome measures were successful BTM integration and the proportion of wounds healed.

Background: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) has high genetic diversity and is classified into 8 genotypes and >90 subtypes, with some endemic to specific world regions. This could compromise direct-acting antiviral efficacy and global HCV elimination.
Methods: We characterized HCV subtypes "rare" in the United Kingdom (non-1a/1b/2b/3a/4d) by means of whole-genome sequencing via a national surveillance program.

Hydrocele is one of the most common causes of scrotal swellings. Fluid accumulation within the tunica vaginalis, a remnant of the peritoneum covering the testicle, leads to scrotal swelling. It is known to be a benign condition with no subsequent complications apart from increasing in size causing discomfort.

Introduction: Although sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors have risen in popularity for managing heart failure (HF) and chronic kidney disease (CKD), little guidance is available for the management of patients with an overlap of HF and CKD.
Areas Covered: Following a brief review of the cardiorenal effects of SGLT2 inhibitors, this narrative review focused on the published clinical evidence pertaining to the cardiovascular and renal efficacy of SGLT2 inhibitors in patients with HF and CKD, including both randomized controlled trials and real-world observational studies. Real-world considerations of using SGLT2 inhibitors in these patients were also reviewed.

As the number of radiotherapy and radiology diagnostic procedures increases from year to year, so does the use of general volatile anaesthesia (VA). Although considered safe, VA exposure can cause different adverse effects and, in combination with ionising radiation (IR), can also cause synergistic effects. However, little is known about DNA damage incurred by this combination at doses applied in a single radiotherapy treatment.

Neutropenia, as an isolated blood cell deficiency, is a feature of a wide spectrum of acquired or congenital, benign or premalignant disorders with a predisposition to develop myelodysplastic neoplasms/acute myeloid leukemia that may arise at any age. In recent years, advances in diagnostic methodologies, particularly in the field of genomics, have revealed novel genes and mechanisms responsible for etiology and disease evolution and opened new perspectives for tailored treatment. Despite the research and diagnostic advances in the field, real world evidence, arising from international neutropenia patient registries and scientific networks, has shown that the diagnosis and management of neutropenic patients is mostly based on the physicians' experience and local practices.

A systematic literature search was conducted on the Medline database via PubMed and SCOPUS until May 2022 to retrieve the relevant studies. The titles and abstracts of unique records were screened for eligibility, followed by the full-text screening of potentially eligible abstracts.

Urethral catheterization is one of the most common procedures in medical practice. Catheterization is not only restricted for urological purposes, but also used for many other indications. For instance, urethral catheterization could be used for intensive care unit patients, trauma and multiple fracture injuries, and advanced neurological condition e.

Introduction: Medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction is used to treat patellofemoral instability either in isolation or in combination with other procedures. Use of allograft can preserve native tissue in children and can be advantageous in patients with connective tissue disorders, including ligamentous laxity. There is limited evidence regarding functional outcomes of allograft MPFL reconstruction in children and adolescents.

Objective: To assess perinatal outcomes for pregnancies affected by suspected or confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection.
Methods: Prospective, web-based registry. Pregnant women were invited to participate if they had suspected or confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection between 1st January 2020 and 31st March 2021 to assess the impact of infection on maternal and perinatal outcomes including miscarriage, stillbirth, fetal growth restriction, pre-term birth and transmission to the infant.

Background: Neurological COVID-19 disease has been reported widely, but published studies often lack information on neurological outcomes and prognostic risk factors. We aimed to describe the spectrum of neurological disease in hospitalised COVID-19 patients; characterise clinical outcomes; and investigate factors associated with a poor outcome.
Methods: We conducted an individual patient data (IPD) meta-analysis of hospitalised patients with neurological COVID-19 disease, using standard case definitions.
Introduction: Redeployment of orthopaedic consultants to a minor injuries unit (MIU) during the COVID-19 pandemic provided a unique opportunity to assess the impact of early senior specialist input on patient management.
Methods: Patient demographics, diagnosis, location of injury and disposal method were compared between three 7-day periods: during the April 2020 COVID-19 lockdown (period A), one month prior to period A (period B) and one year prior to period A (period C). Orthopaedic consultants staffed the MIU during period A, and emergency nurse practitioners staffed the MIU during periods B and C.

Patient immobilisation with volatile anaesthetics (VA) during radiotherapy is sometimes unavoidable. Although it is known that both VAs and ionising radiation can have nephrotoxic effects, there are no studies of their combined effects on DNA damage. The aim of this study was to address this gap by investigating whether 48 groups of healthy Swiss albino mice (totalling 240) would differ in kidney cell DNA damage response (alkaline comet assay) to isoflurane, sevoflurane, or halothane anaesthesia and exposure to 1 Gy or 2 Gy of ionising radiation.

The present systematic review included prospective and retrospective studies that evaluated and followed up patients with AML through active surveillance.

The penis is one of the end-artery organs in the human body. The blood supply of the penis depends on the internal pudendal artery, which arises from the anterior division of the internal iliac artery. Subsequently, the penis is one of the organs that are highly affected by peripheral vascular disease.

Urinary bladder is the most common urologic organ exposed to iatrogenic injury. The bladder trauma is classified into extra-peritoneal, intra-peritoneal, or combined trauma. Intra-peritoneal bladder injury is conventionally being treated with open surgical repair, mainly to explore the abdominal viscera for possible associated injuries and to insert peritoneal drain.
