Maraena whitefish (Coregonus maraena) is a promising coldwater aquaculture species, especially in terms of meat quality. This versatile whitefish species, which inhabits both fresh and brackish waters, including the Baltic Sea, offers promising prospects for aquaculture breeding and cultivation. However, the main problem is the lack of availability of spawners of this species.

Salivary gland secretory carcinoma (SC), previously mammary analog SC, is a low-grade malignancy characterized by well-defined morphology and an immunohistochemical and genetic profile identical to SC of the breast. Translocation t(12;15)(p13;q25) resulting in the ETV6 :: NTRK3 gene fusion is a characteristic feature of SC along with S100 protein and mammaglobin immunopositivity. The spectrum of genetic alterations for SC continues to evolve.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigated the effects of honeybee pollen (BP) on the growth, gut health, and liver structure of African catfish juveniles over a 21-day feeding trial.
  • Results indicated that adding BP to their diet significantly improved growth metrics, with fish in enriched groups gaining 45% more weight than control fish.
  • Histological analyses suggested that BP positively influenced intestinal development and nutrient absorption, with 1% BP recommended as the ideal additive for optimal growth in African catfish.

Total Mercury and Fatty Acids in Selected Fish Species on the Polish Market: A Risk to Human Health.

Int J Environ Res Public Health

August 2022

Department of Limnology and Fishery, Institute of Animal Breeding, Faculty of Biology and Animal Science, Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences, 51-630 Wrocław, Poland.

The muscles of lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush Walbaum, 1792), crucian carp (Carassius carassius Linnaeus, 1758), flounder (Platichthys flesus Linnaeus, 1758), gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata Linnaeus, 1758), mackerel (Scomber scombrus Linnaeus, 1758) and tench (Tinca tinca Linnaeus, 1758) were examined. The total mercury (THg) was processed using the Milestone DMA-80 and the fatty acids were analyzed using the 7890A Agilent Technologies chromatograph. The THg content in analyzed fish ranged from 0.

The incorporation of dehydroamino acid or fragments of oxazole into peptide chain is accompanied by a distorted three-dimensional structure and additionally enables the introduction of non-typical side-chain substituents. Thus, such compounds could be building blocks for obtaining novel foldamers and/or artificial enzymes (artzymes). In this paper, effective synthetic procedures leading to such building blocks-tetrapeptides containing glycyldehydroalanine, glycyldehydrophenylalanine, and glycyloxazole subunits-are described.

Article Synopsis
  • The northern pike is a key fish species for breeders in Europe and North America, with a focus on improving artificial reproduction and raising viable larvae.
  • The study compared fertilization efficiency of northern pike eggs, finding that using deionized water significantly increased embryo hatching rates compared to tap water.
  • The results indicated that the activation medium used during fertilization greatly affects success rates, with the B1 solution showing the most consistent results across different hatcheries.

Boron-Doped Diamond/GaN Heterojunction-The Influence of the Low-Temperature Deposition.

Materials (Basel)

October 2021

Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics, Gdansk University of Technology, 11/12 Narutowicza Str., 80-233 Gdansk, Poland.

We report a method of growing a boron-doped diamond film by plasma-assisted chemical vapour deposition utilizing a pre-treatment of GaN substrate to give a high density of nucleation. CVD diamond was deposited on GaN substrate grown epitaxially via the molecular-beam epitaxy process. To obtain a continuous diamond film with the presence of well-developed grains, the GaN substrates are exposed to hydrogen plasma prior to deposition.

Purpose: To obtain information on characteristics, management, current objective nutritional status and perception of nutritional status of children with cerebral palsy (CP) from healthcare professionals (HCPs) and caregivers.

Materials And Methods: A detailed survey of several items on eight main topics (general characteristics, motor function, comorbidities, therapies, anthropometry, feeding mode and problems and perceived nutritional status) was developed and tested for the study. Correlation between nutritional status and Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) levels was assessed using continuous variables (Z-scores for weight-for-age, height-for-age, weight-for-height, and body mass index-for-age), and categorical variables (being malnourished, stunted, or wasted).

Optimization of artificial reproduction is essential for minimizing genetic diversity, especially when fish are captured from their natural habitats and spawned in controlled conditions. In the present study, there was evaluation of the effects of gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogue (GnRHa) and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) with or without dopamine receptor antagonists such as domperidone (DOM) and metoclopramide (MET) on the spawning efficiency of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) reared in captivity. The control group was intramuscularly (IM) injected with 1 mL of sterile saline solution.

The second-to-fourth-digit (2D:4D) ratio has been widely used as a putative marker of prenatal exposure to testosterone in health, behavioral and sport sciences, but it has only been used few times regarding combat athletes. This study involved 200 male elite combat athletes (Olympic wrestling, kickboxing, judo, taekwondo and karate) and 179 males not participating in any sports. The lengths of the index finger (2D) and ring (4D) finger were measured using computer-assisted image analysis (AutoMetric 2.

We investigated how different antioxidant defenses (ADSs) were shaped by evolution in young/old workers and queens to broaden the limited knowledge on whether ADSs are effective in contemporary pesticide environments and to complete bee oxidative-aging theory. We acquired 1-day-old, 20-day-old, and 2-year-old queens and 1-day-old and 20-day-old workers (foragers) fed 0, 5, or 200 ppb imidacloprid, a pesticide oxidative stressor. The activities of catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione S-transferase, and superoxide dismutase and the level of total antioxidant potential were determined in hemolymph.

The rearing of finfish larvae is a key element in their further culture. Improper breeding protocols may result in high mortality rates, body deformation and growth rate decreases in both the larval and fattening periods. These errors can be avoided by thorough exploration of various aspects of early larvae biology, at least in model fish species.

Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the electrical activity of the masticatory muscles in children with a bilateral complete cleft lip and palate (BCCLP) and posterior crossbite as well as in noncleft subjects with no malocclusion. Another purpose of the study was to examine the possible factors associated with this muscle activity.

Methods: The study included 52 children with mixed dentition and Class I occlusions (20 patients with nonsyndromic BCCLP and 32 subjects with no clefts).

In the fight against the mite, selective breeding of honey bee ( L.) populations that are resistant to the parasitic mite stands as a sustainable solution. Selection initiatives indicate that using the suppressed mite reproduction (SMR) trait as a selection criterion is a suitable tool to breed such resistant bee populations.

Introduction: Epidermal-fatty acid-binding protein (E-FABP) is a marker of transiently amplifying cells which are formed from stem cells in epidermis. Their role is an uptake of fatty acids and metabolism. Psoriatic keratinocytes overexpress E-FABPs, which leads to acanthosis and may explain the lipid's disturbances in psoriasis.

Diplozoidae infects the gills of cyprinid fishes in Africa, Europe, and Asia. Traditionally the hardened internal structures, crucial for identification of diplozoid species, are studied using light microscopy. Recently, the sclerotised haptoral structures of an African diplozoid, Paradiplozoon vaalense, were successfully isolated and visualised using scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
