Brazilian Society of Surgical Oncology guidelines for surgical treatment of endometrial cancer in regions with limited resources.

Background: Approximately 70% of cancer-related deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries. In addition to social and racial inequalities, treatment options in these countries are usually limited because of the lack of trained staff and equipment, limited patient access to health services, and a small number of clinical guidelines.

Objectives: The Brazilian Society of Surgical Oncology developed this guideline to address these barriers and guide physicians treating patients with endometrial cancer (EC) in regions with limited resources and few specialized centers.

Lower Insulin-Dose Adjusted A1c (IDAA1c) Is Associated With Less Complications in Individuals With Type 1 Diabetes Treated With Hematopoetic Stem-Cell Transplantation and Conventional Therapy.

To evaluate the association between insulin-dose adjusted A1C (IDAA1c) and microvascular complications (MC) and hypoglycemia in a representative Brazilian population of Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) patients. This was a cross-sectional study based on a previous study, "Microvascular Complications in Type 1 Diabetes: a comparative analysis of patients treated with autologous nonmyeloablative hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation (AHST) and conventional medical therapy (CT)". The 168 patients in that study (144 from CT plus 24 from AHST) were re-subdivided into two groups, according to their IDAA1c values (30 patients had IDAA1c ≤ 9; 138 had IDAA1c > 9).

Pharmacological Characterization and Raman Spectroscopy Evaluation of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery-Related Carnoy´S Solution Modified by Different Viscosity Agents.

Background: There are several lesions of odontogenic and non-odontogenic origin in the oral cavity, such as odontogenic keratocyst, as well as many treatment options for such lesions. In order to reduce recurrence due to conservative treatments and less aesthetic and functional impairment of the patient (radical therapies), Carnoy's solution has been used as an adjuvant to surgery, showing satisfactory results. Its application is not standardized, presenting risks to adjacent tissues.

Giant Prolactinoma Causing Hydrocephalus and Intracranial Hypertension as First Manifestations of Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 1.

Overall, giant prolactinomas are rare tumors (4%), especially those larger than 60 mm (1%). Despite the predominance of macroadenoma documented in multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1)-related prolactinoma, only three giant prolactinoma cases were described so far (size > 40 mm and prolactin > 1,000 ng/mL). None of them was larger than 60 mm or presented hydrocephalus or intracranial hypertension (ICH) as initial manifestation of MEN1.

Chlorpromazine-impregnated catheters as a potential strategy to control biofilm-associated urinary tract infections.

This study proposes the impregnation of Foley catheters with chlorpromazine (CPZ) to control biofilm formation by , and . The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) for CPZ and the effect of CPZ on biofilm formation were assessed. Afterward, biofilm formation and the effect of ciprofloxacin and meropenem (at MIC) on mature biofilms grown on CPZ-impregnated catheters were evaluated.

Evaluation of bone texture imaging parameters on panoramic radiographs of patients with Sheehan's syndrome: a STROBE-compliant case-control study.

Unlabelled: Sheehan's syndrome (SHS) is a rare condition related to the risk of osteoporosis and evaluation of bone texture imaging features on panoramic radiographs would be suitable for this condition, which was the aim of the present study. Fractal dimension, lacunarity, and trabecular morphologic aspects were significantly altered in these patients.

Introduction: SHS is an important public health problem particularly in developing countries.

Pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions to promote sleep in intensive care units: a critical review.

Purpose: Although it is generally recognized that poor sleep is common in the intensive care unit (ICU), it is still unclear which interventions can effectively improve sleep in this setting. In this review, we critically analyze the various pharmacological and non-pharmacological measures that have been proposed to tackle this problem.

Methods: A search of MEDLINE/PubMed, SciELO, and the Brazilian Virtual Library in Health (LILACS and BNDEF) databases was performed.

The use of conversation maps in the metabolic control of diabetes in Brazilians: a randomized clinical trial.

Objective: To evaluate effects of an educative intervention over the self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) at home for metabolic control.

Method: A total of 91 people with diabetes participated, recruited from the home capillary blood glycemia self-monitoring program. Two groups of participants were formed: one group participated in the SMBG program at home and with usual care (control group), while the other group participated in the SMBG at home and with educative intervention (intervention group).

Introduction And Objective: In this study, we evaluated the influence of the transcript type on hematological and clinical parameters, as well as the event-free survival of 50 patients in the Chronic myeloid leukemia chronic phase.

Methods: We reviewed the medical records of 55 patients with Chronic myeloid leukemia. The eligibility criteria were based on the availability of hematological and clinical baseline data in the medical records.

Spectrum of acute kidney injury associated with cocaine use: report of three cases.

Background: The consequences of cocaine use are multisystemic, such as, for instance, renal failure, hepatotoxicity and pulmonary toxicity, with renal alterations being the focus of the present study. The use of substances that modify the base composition of cocaine (or adulterants) aiming to potentiate its effects also has an impact on these manifestations. The present study aims to report three cases with different diagnosis of acute kidney injury related to cocaine use.

Clinical investigation of gustatory and neurosensory alterations following mandibular third molar surgery: an observational prospective study.

Objective: This study aimed to prospectively observe gustatory and neurosensory alterations following surgical removal of mandibular third molars.

Material And Methods: A prospective clinical study was conducted with patients who required mandibular third molar extraction, recruited from the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Federal University of Ceará (Brazil). Age, sex, and radiographic signs were recorded.

Wernicke's encephalopathy in a patient with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma post-Autologous HSCT.

Wernick's Encephalopathy (WE) is an acute neuropsychiatric syndrome caused by thiamine deficiency post hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT). WE is associated with high mortality and morbidity rates, but due to its rare occurrence, it is rarely considered in patients submitted to this procedure. Considering that, the manuscript reports the clinical characteristics and the possible factors that predisposed the occurrence of WE in a patient with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma post-Autologous HSCT.

Conversation map: an educational strategy in the care of elderly people with diabetes mellitus.

Objective: To report the experience of using diabetes conversation maps as an educational strategy for diabetic elderly people.

Method: Experience report, conducted from July to December 2016 in a specialized outpatient clinic for diabetics, in Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil. A total of 72 users participated, between diabetics and those accompanying them.

Evaluation of different therapeutic Carnoy's formulations on hard human tissues: A Raman microspectroscopy, microhardness, and scanning electron microscopy study.

Purpose: To evaluate different therapeutic Carnoy's solution formulations on hard human tissues.

Materials And Methods: An in vitro study was performed with human teeth (n = 36) and bone fragments (n = 18), randomly divided into two experimental groups (Group I = Carnoy solution with chloroform; Group II = Carnoy solution without chloroform) and a control group (saline solution). The groups were subdivided into pre-conditioning, post-conditioning, and post-conditioning with saline washing.

Exercise Capacity and Respiratory Profile in Patients after Orthopedic Liver Transplantation: a Follow-up Study.

Introduction: We sought to describe: 1) The influence of orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) on exercise capacity, pulmonary function and respiratory muscle strength after surgery, 2) The relationship between exercise capacity and symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Material And Methods: This is a prospective follow up study conducted with patients submitted to OLT. All patients were assessed before and 1 month after surgery through measurements: six minute walk test (6MWT), 6 min step test (6MST) and HADS (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale).

Identification of the sentinel lymph node using hemosiderin in locally advanced breast cancer.

Objective: to verify the agreement rate in the identification of sentinel lymph node using an autologous marker rich in hemosiderin and 99 Technetium (Tc99) in patients with locally advanced breast cancer.

Methods: clinical trial phase 1, prospective, non-randomized, of 18 patients with breast cancer and clinically negative axilla stages T2=4cm, T3 and T4. Patients were submitted to sub-areolar injection of hemosiderin 48 hours prior to sentinel biopsy surgery, and the identification rate was compared at intraoperative period to the gold standard marker Tc99.
