This study presents the cases of two women who developed severe permanent hypoparathyroidism after neck surgery for papillary thyroid cancer and underwent parathyroid allotransplantation. Despite taking high doses of calcium and calcitriol supplements, the patients experienced persistent hypocalcemic symptoms. Fresh parathyroid tissue was removed and prepared from two patients with hyperparathyroidism secondary to end-stage kidney disease and was implanted in the non-dominant forearm of the recipients.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the link between chronic illnesses like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and the presence of depressive or anxious disorders, aiming to see how these affect patients’ quality of life.
  • - A group of 141 patients participated, with data collected on demographics, lifestyle, and mental health using specific questionnaires, revealing that a significant portion suffered from anxiety and depression.
  • - Findings suggest that both anxiety and depression significantly lower the quality of life for patients with IBD, regardless of the severity of their illness.

Article Synopsis
  • Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is often linked with liver diseases, particularly metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), and there is interest in whether glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) can help prevent serious liver problems.
  • A study analyzed data from nine cohort studies involving over half a million T2DM patients and found that using GLP-1RAs lowered the risk of liver cancer and severe liver complications, with no significant biases in the data.
  • The findings highlight that GLP-1RAs could be more effective for liver protection compared to other diabetes medications, but more long-term studies are needed for confirmation.

Anthropometric measurements as a key diagnostic tool for familial partial lipodystrophy in women.

Diabetol Metab Syndr

September 2024

Brazilian Group for the Study of Inherited and Acquired Lipodystrophies (BRAZLIPO), Fortaleza, CE, Brazil.

Article Synopsis
  • * The study involved 37 FPLD patients and 74 healthy controls, analyzing various parameters such as thigh skinfold thickness and leg fat percentage, alongside genetic testing to classify patients into two groups: FPLD+ and FPLD1.
  • * Results indicated a significant statistical difference in key diagnostic parameters between FPLD groups, revealing a new cutoff point of 20 mm for thigh skinfold thickness in women and suggesting that a leg fat percentage below 29.6% could assist in FPL

Introduction: The most relevant limiting factor for performing end-to-end anastomosis is portal vein thrombosis (PVT), which leads to challenging vascular reconstructions. This study aimed to analyze a single center's experience using the left gastric vein (LGV) for portal flow reconstruction in liver transplantation (LT).

Methods: This retrospective observational study reviewed laboratory and imaging tests, a description of the surgical technique, and outpatient follow-up of patients with portal system thrombosis undergoing LT with portal flow reconstruction using the LGV.

Front Endocrinol (Lausanne)

April 2024

Brazilian Group for the Study of Inherited and Acquired Lipodystrophies (BRAZLIPO), Fortaleza, Brazil.

Article Synopsis
  • Lipodystrophies are disorders that cause the selective loss of fat tissue, leading to increased risks of insulin resistance and related health issues, particularly in women with familial partial lipodystrophy type 2 (FPLD2), who also often face complications with pregnancy and gynecological conditions like PCOS.
  • The study conducted a retrospective analysis of 8 women diagnosed with FPLD2 who had pregnancies, examining their pregnancy outcomes and associated complications.
  • Results indicated significant fetal complications, including high rates of gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, miscarriages, and other neonatal issues, although no cases of infertility were reported.
