Research is one of the American Burn Association's (ABA) strategic priorities. Advocacy is required not only to promote burn research, but also, the ABA's other strategic priorities (Prevention, Quality, and Education). The ABA convened a two-day Research and Advocacy (R&A) Summit in September 2023, to develop a roadmap for the organization's research and advocacy efforts.

White matter hyperintensity on MRI and plasma Aβ42/40 ratio additively increase the risk of cognitive impairment in hypertensive adults.

Alzheimers Dement

October 2024

Taub Institute for Research on Alzheimer's Disease and the Aging Brain, and the Department of Neurology, Columbia University, New York, New York, USA.

Introduction: Dementia often involves comorbid Alzheimer's and vascular pathology, but their combined impact warrants additional study.

Methods: We analyzed the Systolic Blood Pressure Intervention Trial and categorized white matter hyperintensity (WMH) volume into highest versus lowest/mid tertile and the amyloid beta (Aβ)42/40 ratio into lowest versus mid/highest ratio tertile. Using these binary variables, we created four exposure categories: (1) combined low risk, (2) Aβ risk, (3) WMH risk, and (4) combined high risk.

The prioritization of English language in clinical research is a barrier to translational science. We explored promising practices to advance the inclusion of people who speak languages other than English in research conducted within and supported by NIH Clinical Translational Science Award (CTSA) hubs. Key informant interviews were conducted with representatives ( = 24) from CTSA hubs ( = 17).

Article Synopsis
  • The CONFIRM trial aimed to compare the effectiveness of annual fecal immunochemical tests (FIT) versus colonoscopies in reducing colorectal cancer mortality, enrolling over 50,000 veterans between May 2012 and December 2017.
  • The study analyzed participant demographics and examined reasons for those who chose not to participate, highlighting a mix of preferences for either colonoscopy or stool tests based on geographic and temporal factors.
  • Among the 50,126 participants recruited, there was a diverse representation, and the study also noted that 11,109 eligible individuals opted out of participation for various reasons, with insights gathered via case report forms.

Background: Treatment algorithms for the arthroscopic management of femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) syndrome remain controversial because of a paucity of evidence-based guidance. Consequently, notable variability in clinical practice exists between different practitioners, necessitating expert consensus. The purpose of this study is to establish best practice guidelines (BPG) using formal techniques of consensus building among a group of experienced hip arthroscopists driven by the results of a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Objective: To evaluate whether an everolimus-eluting stent (EES) with thinner stent struts and polymer results in less periprocedural myonecrosis and adverse outcomes.

Background: Higher periprocedural myocardial infarction (MI) rates have been reported with the TAXUS® EXPRESS(2) paclitaxel-eluting stent (PES) compared to the bare metal EXPRESS(2)® stent due to more frequent side branch compromise, presumably attributable to the thickness of the stent/polymer on the PES.

Methods: In the SPIRIT III trial, we identified 113 patients in the XIENCE V® EES group and 63 patients in the TAXUS EXPRESS(2) PES group who met the criteria of having a lesion with a jailed side branch (<2 mm diameter, and <50% stenosis).

Objective: To examine rates and predictors of aftercare use, lengths of service use, and predictors of the duration of aftercare service use among 180 adolescents monitored for up to 8.1 years after discharge from an inpatient psychiatry unit.

Method: Drawing upon the Anderson-Newman model of service use, severity of illness, enabling, and predisposing factors assessed during the hospitalization were examined as potential predictors of service use.

Mitochondria in eosinophils: functional role in apoptosis but not respiration.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

February 2001

Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Wake Forrest University School of Medicine, Medical Center Boulevard, Winston-Salem, NC 27157-1054, USA.

In most eukaryotic cells, mitochondria use the respiratory chain to produce a proton gradient, which is then harnessed for the synthesis of ATP. Recently, mitochondrial roles in regulation of apoptosis have been discovered in many cell types. Eosinophils (Eos) die by apoptosis, but the presence and function of mitochondria in Eos are unknown.

Previous studies showed that sensitivity to the ethanol-like discriminative stimulus effects of allopregnanolone and ethanol are enhanced during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle when progesterone levels peak in monkeys trained to discriminate 1.0 g/kg ethanol. The present study further explored the influence of the menstrual cycle phase on the discriminative stimulus effects of ethanol, allopregnanolone, and midazolam.
