The glycosaminoglycan hyaluronan (HA) serves a variety of crucial physiological functions in vertebrates. Synthesized at the plasma membrane and secreted into the extracellular environment, HA polymers span a wide range of molecular weights (MW) that define their activity through a notable size-function relationship. Analytical technologies for determining HA MW distributions typically require selective extraction from complex biofluids or tissues.

Background: Inflammation is a feature of coronary heart disease (CHD), but the role of proinflammatory microbial infection in CHD remains understudied.
Methods And Results: CHD was defined in the MESA (Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis) as myocardial infarction (251 participants), resuscitated arrest (2 participants), and CHD death (80 participants). We analyzed sequencing reads from 4421 MESA participants in the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Trans-Omics for Precision Medicine program using the PathSeq workflow of the Genome Analysis Tool Kit and a 65-gigabase microbial reference.
Objectives: Women remain underrepresented in the emergency medicine (EM) workforce, academic EM, and institutional leadership. In order to support women physicians in EM, we must explore factors that contribute to attrition and workplace satisfaction. For example, tensions between workplace and familial roles are important to consider as women navigate careers in EM.

Objective: Long pentraxin-3 (PTX-3) is an acute phase protein associated with cardiovascular disease, lung injury, and mortality. We evaluated the association between computed tomography (CT)-measurements of adipose tissue and plasma levels of PTX-3.
Methods: We performed a cross-sectional analysis of community-dwelling adults enrolled in the multi-center Multiethnic Study of Atherosclerosis who underwent cardiac or abdominal CT and had available PTX-3 measurements.
ECD is considered to have rapid progression and poor prognosis. Studies have shown that vemurafenib is effective for ECD patients with orbital involvement, but not for ECD with multiple organs. The refinement of treatment approaches and the increased awareness of ECD have led to a dramatic improvement in prognosis.

by Thomas Kuhn has influenced scientists for decades. It focuses on a progression of science involving periodic, fundamental shifts-revolutions-from one existing paradigm to another. Embedded in this theory is the concept of normal science, that is, scientists work within the confines of established theory, a process often compared to a type of puzzle-solving.

Thus, understanding how age affects foraging performance, alone or in interaction with extrinsic factors (like environmental quality), improves our understanding of aging processes in the wild. We examined how foraging traits, measured across five breeding seasons, change with age, environmental variation, and their interaction in Nazca boobies (), a pelagic seabird in Galápagos.

Research shows that a diverse faculty improves academic, clinical, and research outcomes in higher education. Despite that, persons in minority groups, usually categorized by race or ethnicity, are underrepresented in academia (URiA). The Nutrition Obesity Research Centers (NORCs), supported by the NIDDK, hosted workshops on five separate days in September and October 2020.

While they often occur concurrently, their individual effects are understudied. We aimed to assess the independent effects of diabetes and hypertension on LV remodeling in Black adults.

Integrating the crisis management literature with the unfolding model of turnover, we theorize that leader actions trigger initial employee responses but also set the stage for on-going crisis response that influence changes in teachers' turnover intentions. We apply latent growth curve modelling to test our hypotheses based on a sample of 617 K-12 teachers using nine waves of data, including a baseline survey at the start of the 2020-2021 school year and eight follow-up surveys (2-week lags) through the Fall 2020 semester.

Background In people with peripheral artery disease, post hoc analyses of the LITE (Low Intensity Exercise Intervention in Peripheral Artery Disease) randomized trial were conducted to evaluate the effects of walking exercise at a pace inducing ischemic leg symptoms on walking velocity and the Short Physical Performance Battery, compared with walking exercise without ischemic leg symptoms and compared with a nonexercising control group. Methods and Results Participants with peripheral artery disease were randomized to: home-based walking exercise that induced ischemic leg symptoms; home-based walking exercise conducted without ischemic leg symptoms; or a nonexercising control group for 12 months. Outcomes were change of walking velocity over 4 m and change of the Short Physical Performance Battery (0-12, with 12=best) at 6- and 12-month follow-up.

Background: Prior data has demonstrated increased mortality in hospitalized patients with acute heart failure (AHF) and troponin elevation. No data has specifically examined the prognostic significance of troponin elevation in patients with AHF discharged after emergency department (ED) management.
Objective: Evaluate the relationship between troponin elevation and outcomes in patients with AHF who are treated and released from the ED.

Methods: Prospective observational study conducted over 4 months in a tertiary-level academic medical center neurocritical care unit. Our study involved family discussions regarding plan of care for admitted patients observed by a neutral observer.
Pulmonary sarcomatoid carcinoma (PSC) is a rare subtype of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with an extremely poor prognosis making it a therapeutic challenge. However, the development of genetic variation molecular diagnosis and targeted agents has brought the treatment of such malignancies to the precision era. Co-existing mutations of EGFR and MET have been reported in NSCLC, but rarely found in PSC.

Although tropical regions harbor the greatest arthropod diversity on Earth, the majority of species are taxonomically and scientifically unknown. Furthermore, how they are organized into functional communities and distributed among habitats is mostly unstudied. Here we examine species richness, diversity, and community composition of carabid beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) and compare them between flooded (FP) and non-flooded terra firme (TF) forests in the Yasuní area of Ecuador.

Urine-derived stem cells (USC) are isolated from voided urine and have demonstrated potential for use in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine therapies. Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is a common urological malignancy that originates in the kidney. Since USC also originate in the kidney, the objective of this study was to investigate any biological differences between USC isolated from healthy patients and those isolated from ccRCC patients (rc-USC).
