Objectives: We report the first prospective trial of prostatic urethral lift for the treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia in Japan.

Methods: This prospective study was conducted at a single institution and included patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia who underwent prostatic urethral lift based on the Japanese surgical indication. The primary efficacy endpoint was reduced international prostatic symptoms score in the early postoperative period after prostatic urethral lift.

A 67-year-old woman with a history of poorly controlled asthma was admitted to our hospital with a persistent cough and abnormal chest radiographic findings. Her diagnosis was allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA). Following treatment with mepolizumab, her symptoms and imaging findings improved initially.

Article Synopsis
  • - Endobronchial lipomas, although rare, should be considered by doctors when patients experience recurring pneumonia.
  • - Diagnosis typically involves imaging techniques like computed tomography and procedures like bronchoscopy.
  • - In this case, the patient's coughing improved after having a right basal segmentectomy, a type of surgical removal.

Background And Aims: Testosterone deficiency is often related to geriatric syndrome including erectile dysfunction, osteo-porosis, depression, cognitive impairment, cardiovascular diseases and frailty. Despite the existence of many studies on short-term exercise and serum testosterone levels, few research have focused on exercise habits from young age and testosterone values in middle-aged male. In this study, we investigated whether belonging to an athletic club from school age could predict serum-free testosterone (FT) levels.

β-D-glucan is extensively employed as a supplementary diagnostic tool for pneumonia (PCP) and typically yields positive results in most cases. We present a case of a 73-year-old woman with a history of rheumatoid arthritis, who was receiving biological agents and was admitted due to pneumonia. Initially, the β-D-glucan test was negative.

Department of Respiratory Medicine, Kanazawa Medical University, 1-1 Daigaku, Uchinada-machi, Kahoku-gun, Ishikawa, 920-0293, Japan.

Background: Pulmonary arteriovenous malformations are mostly caused by congenitally abnormal shunts between pulmonary arteries and pulmonary veins.

Case Presentation: A 74-year-old Japanese woman with a history of bronchiectasis was admitted to our hospital because of dyspnea on exertion. Pulmonary angiography and reconstructed three-dimensional contrast-enhanced computed tomography images showed shunts between pulmonary arteries and pulmonary veins, indicating a diagnosis of pulmonary arteriovenous malformations.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to identify genetic variants causing cardiac conduction system disease (CCSD) in patients using whole-exome sequencing (WES) and evaluate the effectiveness of functional studies in determining pathogenicity.
  • Researchers conducted WES on 23 patients with early-onset CCSD and analyzed 117 genes associated with heart conditions, identifying five patients with pathogenic protein truncating variants and finding 21 additional variants of uncertain significance.
  • Functional analyses using zebrafish models demonstrated that certain genetic variants affected heart function, leading to a reclassification of some variants from uncertain to likely pathogenic in six patients, highlighting the potential of such studies in genetic research.

Aims: Cough, one of the main symptoms of bronchial asthma, is a chronic airway inflammatory disease with functionally damaged bronchial epithelium. Recently, we established an animal model with cough hypersensitivity after antigen challenge and clearly showed the protective effect of carbocysteine in this model. This study was designed to investigate the clinical effect of carbocysteine for cough sensitivity in patients with bronchial asthma.

Background: The increased eicosanoid synthesis has been suggested as the underlying mechanism of chronic productive cough in patients with chronic bronchitis.

Method: The effects of the orally active thromboxane A2 (TxA2) receptor antagonist seratrodast and the cysteinyl leukotrienes (cLTs) receptor antagonist pranlukast on cough response to inhaled capsaicin were examined in sixteen patients with stable chronic bronchitis. Capsaicin cough threshold, defined as the lowest concentration of capsaicin eliciting five or more coughs, was measured as an index of airway cough sensitivity.
