Article Synopsis
  • The study looked at prostate cancer tumors from families instead of just random cases to find new changes in their DNA called copy number variations (CNVs).
  • They found that a gene named EEF2 was often increased in tumors from a specific Australian family but was less common in other patients without family links.
  • The research suggests that familial tumors might be different because of inherited traits, and studying EEF2 could help find new ways to diagnose or treat prostate cancer.

Urban-rural prostate cancer disparities in a regional state of Australia.

Sci Rep

February 2022

Menzies Institute for Medical Research, University of Tasmania, TAS, 17 Liverpool St, Hobart, 7000, Australia.

Men living in regional and remote areas experience disparities in prostate cancer (PrCa) diagnosis, clinical characteristics and treatment modalities. We sought to determine whether such disparities exist in PrCa patients from Tasmania; a regional state of Australia with the second-highest rate of diagnosis and where over a third of residents live in outer regional and remote areas. Our study included clinicopathological data from 1526 patients enrolled in the Prostate Cancer Outcomes Registry-Tasmania.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers studied gene fusions in prostate cancer (PrCa) to help doctors better treat patients.
  • They found that about 64% of tumors in a specific family had gene fusions, including some known ones and two new types.
  • Their findings suggest that these gene fusions might be inherited and can help identify which patients are at risk for less aggressive forms of prostate cancer.

COVID-19 and immunothrombosis: Pathophysiology and therapeutic implications.

Crit Rev Oncol Hematol

December 2021

Department of Hematology, Launceston General Hospital, WP Holman Clinic, Level 1. PO Box 1963, Launceston, Tasmania, Australia. Electronic address:

The coagulopathy of COVID-19 is characterised by significantly elevated D Dimer and fibrinogen, mild thrombocytopenia and a mildly prolonged PT/APTT. A high incidence of thrombotic complications occurs despite standard thromboprophylaxis. The evidence to date supports immunothrombosis as the underlying mechanism for this coagulopathy which is triggered by a hyperinflammatory response and endotheliopathy.

Background: To investigate the prognostic significance of positron emission tomography (PET) parameters from F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET scans performed pre- and post- chemo-radiotherapy (CRT) for squamous cell carcinoma of the anal canal (AC).

Methods: From January 2013 to January 2017, 19 patients with non-metastatic AC enrolled on a prospective trial underwent FDG-PET/CT imaging before and 12 weeks following CRT. A computer-generated volume of interest (VOI) was snapped around the primary tumour using six different standard uptake value (SUV) thresholds and the following parameters were extracted: SUV max, mean, median, standard deviation and peak as well as metabolic tumour volume (MTV) and total lesion glycolysis.

Radiation therapy staffing model 2014.

J Med Radiat Sci

December 2016

Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research and Wellness Centre, Austin Hospital, Heidelberg, Victoria, Australia.

Introduction: In 2001, the Radiation Therapy Advisory Panel (RTAP) of the Australian Society of Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy (ASMIRT) (formerly known as Australian Institute of Radiography) published a model for radiation therapist staffing in Australian radiation oncology departments. Between 2012-2013, the model was reviewed to ensure it reflected current radiation therapy practice, technology, and to facilitate forward planning of the radiation therapy workforce.

Method: Twenty-four sites from all states participated and provided data on megavoltage simulation, planning and treatment delivery.

Aims: In technically advanced multicentre clinical trials, participating centres can benefit from a credentialing programme before participating in the trial. Education of staff in participating centres is an important aspect of a successful clinical trial. In the multicentre study of fractionated versus single fraction stereotactic ablative body radiotherapy in lung oligometastases (TROG 13.

This review was initiated to assess the outcome of treatment with radical radiation therapy with curative intent for elderly patients diagnosed to have Stage I non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The study involved a retrospective review of 347 patients with T1 and T2N0M0 tumours treated at the Queensland Radium Institute (QRI) during the period 1985-1992. The main reasons for not proceeding to surgery included poor performance status, old age or refusal to submit to surgery.
