Article Synopsis
  • Light quality significantly influences not only the growth and development of tea plants but also their leaf color, with red light causing yellowing of the leaves.
  • Under red light treatment, tea leaves exhibited lower SPAD and Fv/Fm values compared to white and blue light, indicating reduced photosynthetic efficiency.
  • The study identified that genes involved in photosynthesis and chlorophyll biosynthesis had decreased expression under red light, whereas carotenoid biosynthesis genes were more active, shedding light on the molecular mechanisms behind leaf yellowing in tea plants.

December 2024

Key Laboratory of Animal Molecular Nutrition of Education of Ministry, Key Laboratory of Animal Feed and Nutrition of Zhejiang Province, Institute of Animal Nutrition and Feed Sciences, College of Animal Sciences, Zhejiang University, 310058, Hangzhou, China.

Suanshui is a traditional fermented vegetable food in the southwest of China that is a rich source of probiotics. This study aimed to screen probiotics from Suanshui that have a protective effect against liver injury using in vivo and in vitro experiments. Eleven strains were isolated according to acid-producing capacity and probiotic properties, including antibacterial activity against pathogenic bacteria, tolerance to artificial gastrointestinal fluid and bile salts, heat resistance, antioxidant capacity, hydrophobicity, autoaggregation capacity, and adhesion capacity.

March 2024

Burn Injury Research Unit, University of Western Australia, 35 Stirling Highway, Crawley, WA 6009, Australia.

Parents' emotions after their child's burn might be influenced by the injury circumstances or demographic characteristics of the patient and family. Parents' post-traumatic stress symptoms and their child's distress may interact and affect emotional states. The psychosocial outcomes of parents were measured using the Impact of Event Scale-Revised, the CARe Burn Scale, and the Post-traumatic Growth Inventory-Brief.

The Pharmacokinetics of Δ-Tetrahydrocannabinol in Sheep.

Animals (Basel)

November 2024

The Vet Pharmacist, East Fremantle, WA 6158, Australia.

The pharmacokinetics of Δ-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ-THC) has not been established in ruminants. Pharmacokinetic knowledge is important given feeding industrial hemp biomass has been shown to result in tissue residues post feeding in sheep. Due to a lack of testing and available data, a 'maximum' concentration of Δ-THC has not been currently set for foods of animal origin.

Ion Trios: Cause of Ion Specific Interactions in Aqueous Solutions and Path to a Better pH Definition.

ACS Omega

November 2024

Fluid Science & Resources, School of Engineering, University of Western Australia, Crawley, WA 6009, Australia.

Many important thermodynamic calculations for aqueous systems are profoundly limited because ion specific interactions have not been understood. Here an alternative modeling paradigm with compelling advantages is presented based on fundamental insights regarding ion-ion interactions at higher electrolyte concentrations. We also show how an intense ongoing controversy regarding single ion activity coefficients (SIACs) can be resolved and how SIACs can be quantified in full thermodynamic compliance using an overlooked convention.

Clinical prediction of wound re-epithelisation outcomes in non-severe burn injury using the plasma lipidome.

Burns

February 2025

Burns Service of Western Australia, WA Department of Health, Perth, WA 6150, Australia; Burn Injury Research Unit, School of Biomedical Sciences, University of Western Australia, Perth, WA 6009, Australia; Fiona Wood Foundation, Perth, WA 6150, Australia. Electronic address:

Whilst wound repair in severe burns has received substantial research attention, non-severe burns (<20 % total body surface area) remain relatively understudied, despite causing considerable physiological impact and constituting most of the hospital admissions for burns. Early prediction of healing outcomes would decrease financial and patient burden, and aid in preventing long-term complications from poor wound healing. Lipids have been implicated in inflammation and tissue repair and may play essential roles in burn wound healing.

Fuzzy logic presents a promising approach for Species Distribution Modelling by generating a value that can be used for comparative purposes termed 'environmental favourability'. In contrast to 'presence probability', 'environmental favourability' remains robust regardless of species prevalence. This characteristic facilitates effective comparisons across species with varying levels of prevalence.

Drought-tolerant wheat for enhancing global food security.

Funct Integr Genomics

November 2024

State Agricultural Biotechnology Centre, Centre for Crop and Food Innovation, Food Futures Institute, Murdoch University, Murdoch, WA, 6150, Australia.

Wheat is among the most produced grain crops of the world and alone provides a fifth of the world's calories and protein. Wheat has played a key role in food security since the crop served as a Neolithic founder crop for the establishment of world agriculture. Projections showing a decline in global wheat yields in changing climates imply that food security targets could be jeopardized.

Bronchial artery aneurysms are a rare vascular pathology, however bronchial artery pseudoaneurysms are even less commonly observed with minimal cases available in the literature. They are often associated with conditions such as lung infections or malignancies and are typically managed with endovascular embolization. However, complex vascular anatomy may render endovascular approaches unsuitable.

Electronic address:

Genome-wide identification and comparative gene-family analyses have commonly been performed to investigate species-specific evolution linked to various traits and molecular pathways. However, most previous studies have been limited to gene screening in a single reference genome, failing to account for the gene presence/absence variations (gPAVs) in a species. Here, we propose an innovative pangenome-based approach for gene-family analyses based on orthologous gene groups (OGGs).

  • Evidence-based guidelines suggest that all older adults with hip fractures should receive oral nutrition supplements (ONS), but this study found that only 47.3% of hospitalized patients received them.
  • The research involved 385 older adults aged 65 and older from 29 hospitals across two countries, highlighting that ONS was more commonly given to those identified as malnourished and those lacking preoperative assessments.
  • The study concludes that a more structured approach is needed to ensure that all older adults, regardless of cognitive or nutritional status, receive ONS to improve recovery outcomes after hip fractures.
