Article Synopsis
  • - The study performed a time-driven, activity-based cost analysis of retinal detachment surgery at a single academic institution to assess costs versus Medicare reimbursement rates.
  • - The analysis revealed that the average cost of the surgery was $6,247.17 while the reimbursement was only $5,442.91, resulting in a net loss of $804.26 per procedure.
  • - To break even, the average operation time would need to be significantly reduced from 90.49 minutes to 64.90 minutes, highlighting that current Medicare rates may underestimate true surgical costs and could impact patient access to care.

HSPB4/CRYAA Protect Photoreceptors during Retinal Detachment in Part through FAIM2 Regulation.

Neurol Int

August 2024

Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, W.K. Kellogg Eye Center, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI 48105, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • This study looked at how a protein called α-crystallin helps protect special cells in the eye (called photoreceptors) when the retina gets separated from its layers.
  • Researchers tested this using rat and mouse eyes and found out that α-crystallin levels increase quickly when the retina gets detached.
  • They discovered that αA-crystallin not only helps keep photoreceptors alive but also works with another protein called FAIM2 to do this job better, especially when αA-crystallin is changed in a certain way (phosphorylation).

Electronic address:

Regulation of gene expression is achieved through the modulation of regulatory inputs both pre- and post-transcriptionally. Methyltransferase-like 3 (METTL3) is a key player in pre-mRNA processing, actively catalyzing N6-methyladenosine (m6A). Among the most enriched mRNA targets of METTL3 is the Ras Responsive Element Binding Protein 1 (RREB1), a transcription factor which functions to govern cell fate, proliferation and DNA repair.

Purpose: Diabetic macular edema (DME), a leading cause of visual impairment, can occur regardless of diabetic retinopathy (DR) stage. Poor metabolic control is hypothesized to contribute to DME development, although large-scale studies have yet to identify such an association. This study aims to determine whether measurable markers of dysmetabolism are associated with DME development in persons with diabetes.

Article Synopsis
  • Squamous cell carcinoma of the orbit is rare because there’s no squamous epithelium present, and it usually originates from skin lesions, like epidermoid cysts.
  • The case study discusses a 63-year-old woman who experienced double vision and forehead pain due to an orbital lesion that was initially thought to be a ruptured epidermoid cyst.
  • After surgery, she had a recurrence of symptoms, and further examination revealed that the cyst had transformed into cystic squamous cell carcinoma, highlighting the potential for malignant change in epidermoid cysts.

Introduction: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a leading cause of blindness. Retinal imaging is an important tool to monitor the progression of DR. While seven-standard retinal fields are the traditional method for evaluating DR, ultra-widefield (UWF) imaging allows for improved visualization of peripheral areas of nonperfusion (NP) and neovascularization (NV), which could be used as biomarkers to monitor and predict progression of DR.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on a case of conjunctival apocrine hidrocystoma that developed 60 years after a strabismus surgery in a 71-year-old man, highlighting its clinical features.
  • The cystic lesion was diagnosed through surgical excision, revealing characteristic cell structures associated with apocrine hidrocystomas, and a review of seven similar cases found that all presented after age 50.
  • The findings suggest that previous trauma or surgery, like strabismus surgery, might lead to the development of apocrine hidrocystomas due to ectopic gland deposition.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to investigate if a negative test result for L265P mutation, associated with vitreoretinal lymphoma (VRL) and primary CNS lymphoma, in liquid biopsies from intraocular fluids can be a useful adjuvant test to diagnose chronic lymphocytic leukemia in clinically challenging cases.

Case Presentations: We selected patients with a past medical history or examinations findings suspicious for intraocular lymphoma. We evaluated both vitreous and aqueous humor-derived (AHD) L265P mutation from patients that had suspected intraocular lymphoma that warranted a liquid biopsy procedure.

Quiescence enables unrestricted cell fate in naive embryonic stem cells.

Nat Commun

February 2024

Department of Medicine, Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA, 90033, USA.

Quiescence in stem cells is traditionally considered as a state of inactive dormancy or with poised potential. Naive mouse embryonic stem cells (ESCs) can enter quiescence spontaneously or upon inhibition of MYC or fatty acid oxidation, mimicking embryonic diapause in vivo. The molecular underpinning and developmental potential of quiescent ESCs (qESCs) are relatively unexplored.

Purpose: Primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) is a rare but deadly malignancy that principally affects adults in the fifth and sixth decades of life. Despite diagnostic advances in analyses of cerebral spinal fluid and neuroimaging, definitive diagnosis of PCNSL requires primary brain tissue biopsy. While small neurosurgical biopsy volumes are pursued to minimize removal of normal brain tissue, the spatial margins to precisely biopsy pathologic tissue are narrow and can result in missed diagnoses.
