Transversality Conditions for Geodesics on the Statistical Manifold of Multivariate Gaussian Distributions.

Entropy (Basel)

November 2022

Department of Computer Engineering and Sciences, Florida Institute of Technology, 150 W. University Blvd., Melbourne, FL 32940, USA.

We consider the problem of finding the closest multivariate Gaussian distribution on a constraint surface of all Gaussian distributions to a given distribution. Previous research regarding geodesics on the multivariate Gaussian manifold has focused on finding closed-form, shortest-path distances between two fixed distributions on the manifold, often restricting the parameters to obtain the desired solution. We demonstrate how to employ the techniques of the calculus of variations with a variable endpoint to search for the closest distribution from a family of distributions generated via a constraint set on the parameter manifold.

Acephate is an organophosphorus pesticide (OP) that is widely used to control insects in agricultural fields such as in vegetables and fruits. Toxic OPs can enter human and animal bodies and eventually lead to chronic or acute poisoning. However, traditional enzyme inhibition and colorimetric methods for OPs detection usually require complicated detection procedures and prolonged time and have low detection sensitivity.

Combined Effects of Scarification, Phytohormones, Stratification, and Soil Type on the Germination and/or Seedling Performance of Three Tamaulipan Thornscrub Forest Species.

Plants (Basel)

October 2022

School of Earth, Environmental, and Marine Sciences, University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, 1 W University Blvd, Brownsville, TX 78520, USA.

Tamaulipan thornforests in south Texas and northeast Mexico are a conservation hotspot. Shortages of native seedlings limit regional restoration and are largely driven by knowledge gaps regarding propagation of the 75+ thornforest species planted during restorations. We previously investigated three thornforest species with low or inconsistent germination or seedling survival: (Fabaceae), (Boraginaceae), and (Rutaceae), and identified the types and dosages of chemical seed treatments that maximized germination.

Pesticide exposure and cortical brain activation among farmworkers in Costa Rica.

Neurotoxicology

December 2022

Center for Environmental Research and Community Health (CERCH), School of Public Health, University of California, Berkeley, 1995 University Avenue, Suite 265, Berkeley, CA 94720, USA.

Background: Previous epidemiological studies have reported associations of pesticide exposure with poor cognitive function and behavioral problems. However, these findings have relied primarily on neuropsychological assessments. Questions remain about the neurobiological effects of pesticide exposure, specifically where in the brain pesticides exert their effects and whether compensatory mechanisms in the brain may have masked pesticide-related associations in studies that relied purely on neuropsychological measures.

Centre for Advanced Materials Research (CMR), University of Texas at El Paso, 500 W University Ave, El Paso, Texas 79968, United States.

We report on the crystal structure, phase stability, surface morphology, microstructure, chemical bonding, and electronic properties of gallium oxide (GaO) nanofibers made by a simple and economically viable electrospinning process. The effect of processing parameters on the properties of GaO nanofibers were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Raman spectroscopy. Thermal treatments in the range of 700-900 °C induce crystallization of amorphous fibers and lead to phase stabilization of α-GaOOH, β-GaO, or mixtures of these phases.

The temporal dynamics of bilingual language control.

Psychon Bull Rev

April 2023

Haskins Laboratories, New Haven, CT, USA.

Bilinguals need to control interference from the nontarget language, to avoid saying words in the wrong language. This study investigates how often bilinguals apply such control in a dual-language mode, when speaking one language after the other when the two languages cannot be used interchangeably: over and over (every time they say a word), or only once (the first time they use a word or language after a language switch). Three groups of Spanish-English bilinguals named pictures first in their dominant, then in their nondominant, and then again in their dominant language; a fourth control group of bilinguals named pictures in their dominant language throughout.

The geographically widespread species Afrixalus laevis (Anura: Hyperoliidae) currently has a disjunct distribution in western Central Africa (Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and possibly adjacent countries) and the area in and near the Albertine Rift in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo and neighboring countries. At least two herpetologists have previously suggested that these disjunct populations represent distinct species, and herein, we utilize an integrative taxonomic approach with molecular and morphological data to reconcile the taxonomy of these spiny reed frogs. We sequenced 1554 base pairs of the 16S and RAG1 genes from 34 samples of A.
