With this study, we investigated the relationship between a cow's and calf's metabolic state, and its effect on health status. To achieve this, 20 calves of primiparous and 20 calves of multiparous cows were selected. The calves were monitored for 30 days and scored for signs of disease, as described in McQuirk (2008); according to score, they were divided into healthier calves; the Low calf score group (LCS, 5-8), Medium calf score group (MCS, 9-12) and High calf score group (HCS, 14-17); or calves most prone to disease.

A set of evidence-based alcohol control policy measures was adopted in the period 2016-2020 in Lithuania. The present study fills a knowledge gap on how changes in alcohol control policy are associated with attitudes toward different alcohol policy measures. This study aims to explore whether support for key alcohol control policy measures in Lithuania declined following implementation of alcohol control measures.

International Federation of Sports Medicine, Fédération Internationale de Médecine du Sport (FIMS), Lausanne, Switzerland.

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including coronary heart disease, stroke, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, dementia, depression and cancers, are on the rise worldwide and are often associated with a lack of physical activity (PA). Globally, the levels of PA among individuals are below WHO recommendations. A lack of PA can increase morbidity and mortality, worsen the quality of life and increase the economic burden on individuals and society.

The aim of the research was to evaluate the influence of the ripening stage on the accumulation of polyphenols and antioxidant activity in fruits of species. The experiment included two factors: I-four different species (, , , ) and II-three ripening stages. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used to analyze the individual phenolic compounds (flavonoids and phenolic acids), and the spectrophotometric method was applied to determine antioxidant activity.

The literature confirms that fine recycled concrete aggregate (fRCA) can be used as a replacement for natural soil in new concrete, offering many advantages. Despite these advantages, there are also critical barriers to the development of fRCA in new mixes. Among these, the first challenge is the variability of fRCA properties, in both physical, chemical, and mechanical terms.

Background: Male excess mortality is mostly related to non-biological factors, and is thus of high social- and health-policy concern. Previous research has mainly focused on national patterns, while subnational disparities have been less in the focus. This study takes a spatial perspective on subnational patterns, covering seven European countries at the crossroad between Eastern and Western Europe.

Achievement goal theory has been a dominant motivation framework since the 1980s. The 3 × 2 achievement goal framework emerged in the literature in 2011. We aimed to conduct a systematic review with meta-analysis following the PRISMA guidelines of the 3 × 2 achievement goal research in education, sport, and occupation settings.

Environmental exposures in early-life and general health in childhood.

Environ Health

July 2023

University Grenoble Alpes, Inserm U 1209, CNRS UMR 5309, Team of Environmental Epidemiology applied to Development and Respiratory Health, Institute for Advanced Biosciences, Grenoble, France.

Article Synopsis
  • Early-life environmental exposures may contribute to chronic diseases, prompting this study to investigate a comprehensive health score for children linked to a variety of prenatal and postnatal factors.
  • Analyzed data from 870 children across six European cohorts, assessing 53 prenatal and 105 childhood environmental factors using a health score based on cardiometabolic, respiratory/allergy, and mental health parameters.
  • Findings revealed a lower health score related to maternal smoking and certain pollutants, while higher scores linked to exposure to greenspaces, pets, and healthier lifestyles, highlighting complex relationships between environment and children’s health.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on estimating excess mortality across German states during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, aiming to understand regional disparities.
  • It utilizes weekly mortality data to analyze death rates and explore relationships between excess mortality, COVID-19 cases, and socioeconomic factors using fixed-effects regression models.
  • Findings indicate that excess mortality patterns shifted from a South-to-North gradient in 2020 to an East-to-West gradient in 2021, with significant regional disparities linked to economic activity, employment, and healthcare capacity.

Article Synopsis
  • The Laelapidae family of mites, part of the Mesostigmata group, shows significant diversity in both form and habitat; however, most classifications are still based mainly on physical traits rather than genetic analysis.
  • This study focuses on eight mite species collected from various small rodents across Europe, specifically in Lithuania, Norway, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic.
  • By using molecular markers, including nuclear and mitochondrial genes, the research offers new insights into the genetic relationships and diversity of these mites across different regions and hosts.

Green spaces may have beneficial impacts on children's cognition. However, few studies explored the exposure to green spaces beyond residential areas, and their availability, accessibility and uses at the same time. The aim of the present study was to describe patterns of availability, accessibility, and uses of green spaces among primary school children and to explore how these exposure dimensions are associated with cognitive development.

Epimutations are rare alterations of the normal DNA methylation pattern at specific loci, which can lead to rare diseases. Methylation microarrays enable genome-wide epimutation detection, but technical limitations prevent their use in clinical settings: methods applied to rare diseases' data cannot be easily incorporated to standard analyses pipelines, while epimutation methods implemented in R packages () have not been validated for rare diseases. We have developed , a Bioconductor package (https://bioconductor.

Aims: From 1 January 2018, the number of retail hours for the sale of alcohol was reduced from 14 to 5 hours on Sundays and from 14 to 10 hours on the other days of the week in Lithuania. The significant reduction of hours for the sale of alcohol on Sundays may have affected the distribution of alcohol-attributable deaths during the week. This study aimed to examine the change in the weekly pattern of alcohol-attributable male mortality before and after imposing limits on the hours when alcohol can be sold.

The extension of late working life has been proposed as a potential remedy for the challenges of aging societies. For Germany, surprisingly little is known about trends and social inequalities in the length of late working life. We use data from the German Microcensus to estimate working life expectancy from age 55 onward for the 1941‒1955 birth cohorts.

This study aims to evaluate the potential usefulness of a novel artificial intelligence (AI)-based video processing algorithm for rapidly activating ambulance services (EMS) in unwitnessed out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) cases in public places. We hypothesized that AI should activate EMS using public surveillance cameras after detecting a person fallen due to OHCA. We created an AI model based on our experiment performed at the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences, Kaunas, Lithuania, in Spring 2023.
