Fluorene-based low molar weight derivatives were synthesized in Suzuki reactions by using key starting materials 9-benzylidene-2,7-dibromofluorene or 3-(2,7-dibromofluoren-9-ylmethylen)-9-ethylcarbazole and various aryl boronic acids. Photophysical properties of the compounds were investigated in different solutions as well as in solid state. The thermal investigations showed that the obtained compounds are highly thermally stable with temperatures of 5% mass loss (T) in the range of 311-432 °C.

Background: While biological age in adults is often understood as representing general health and resilience, the conceptual interpretation of accelerated biological age in children and its relationship to development remains unclear. We aimed to clarify the relationship of accelerated biological age, assessed through two established biological age indicators, telomere length and DNA methylation age, and two novel candidate biological age indicators, to child developmental outcomes, including growth and adiposity, cognition, behavior, lung function and the onset of puberty, among European school-age children participating in the HELIX exposome cohort.

Methods: The study population included up to 1173 children, aged between 5 and 12 years, from study centres in the UK, France, Spain, Norway, Lithuania, and Greece.

Microbubble (MB)- and ultrasound (US)-facilitated intracellular Ca delivery, known as sonoporation (SP), is a promising anticancer treatment modality, since it allows a spatio-temporally controllable and side-effect-free alternative to conventional chemotherapy. The current study provides extensive evidence that a 5 mM concentration of Ca in combination with US alone or US and Sonovue MBs can be an alternative to the conventional 20 nM concentration of the anticancer drug bleomycin (BLM). Ca application together with SP induces a similar level of death in Chinese hamster ovary cells to the combination of BLM and SP but does not cause systemic toxicity, as is inherent to conventional anticancer drugs.

Molecular sampling with vacuum-assisted tissue electroporation is a novel, minimally invasive method for molecular profiling of solid lesions. In this paper, we report on the design of the battery-powered pulsed electric field generator and electrode configuration for an electroporation-based molecular sampling device for skin cancer diagnostics. Using numerical models of skin electroporation corroborated by the potato tissue phantom model, we show that the electroporated tissue volume, which is the maximum volume for biomarker sampling, strongly depends on the electrode's geometry, needle electrode skin penetration depths, and the applied pulsed electric field protocol.

Methods: Educational inequalities in hypothermia mortality among individuals aged 30-74 in the Baltic countries (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania) and Finland in 2000-15 were examined using data from longitudinal mortality follow-up studies of population censuses (the Baltics) and from a longitudinal register-based population data file (Finland).

Synaptic plasticity is believed to be a key mechanism underlying learning and memory. We developed a phenomenological N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor-based voltage-dependent synaptic plasticity model for synaptic modifications at hippocampal CA3-CA1 synapses on a hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neuron. The model incorporates the GluN2A-NMDA and GluN2B-NMDA receptor subunit-based functions and accounts for the synaptic strength dependence on the postsynaptic NMDA receptor composition and functioning without explicitly modeling the NMDA receptor-mediated intracellular calcium, a local trigger of synaptic plasticity.
