During deep-sea freediving, many freedivers describe symptoms fairly similar to what has been related to inert gas narcosis in scuba divers. This manuscript aims to present the potential mechanisms underlying these symptoms. First, known mechanisms of narcosis are summarized while scuba diving.

Measuring small-area level deprivation in Belgium: The Belgian Index of Multiple Deprivation.

Background: In the past, deprivation has been mostly captured through simple and univariate measures such as low income or poor educational attainment in research on health and social inequalities in Belgium. This paper presents a shift towards a more complex, multidimensional measure of deprivation at the aggregate level and describes the development of the first Belgian Indices of Multiple Deprivation (BIMDs) for the years 2001 and 2011.

Methods: The BIMDs are constructed at the level of the smallest administrative unit in Belgium, the statistical sector.

Here, we combined functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), resting-state functional connectivity (rs-fc), and effective connectivity to assess spontaneous fluctuations and task-induced modulation of signals among regions entailing scene-processing, the primary visual area and the hippocampus (HC), responsible for the retrieval of stored information.

The principal objective of this current study is to develop and implement a calibration method to assess, map, and estimate the vulnerability of the Ghiss Nekkor alluvial aquifer to pollution risk.

However, there is a lack of research exploring the impact of tDCS on emotional material processing in the prefrontal cortex, particularly in regard to proactive and reactive modes of cognitive control.

Relationship between intensive care surge capacity and hospital factors: an extensive experience.

As a prolonged surge scenario, the COVID-19 pandemic has offered an unparalleled opportunity to improve hospital surge capacity (SC) understanding and the ability to manage it. In this study, the authors report the experience of a large hospital network and evaluate potential relationships between Intensive Care Units SC (ICU-SC) and some hospital-related variables: bed occupancy, emergency department admissions, ward admission from ED, and elective surgery procedures. Pearson's partial correlation coefficient (r) has been used to define the relationship between SC and the daily values of the above variables, collected through a dedicated digital platform that also ensured a regular quality check of the data.

There is an increasing motivation to implement pharmacist-led screening services in community pharmacies. This study aims to develop tools to support the pharmacist in the context of a diabetes and cardiovascular disease risk assessment service. Our development involved a multistep process using a user-centred approach, including a need assessment phase (14 patients, 17 pharmacists) and a creative design phase, followed by the evaluation of the materials (10 patients, 16 pharmacists).

They can give rise to decays of particles otherwise forbidden. Using data collected at the Pierre Auger Observatory, we search for signatures of such instanton-induced processes that would be suggestive of super-heavy particles decaying in the Galactic halo.

Comparison of static and dynamic exposures to air pollution, noise, and greenness among seniors living in compact-city environments.

GPS technology and tracking study designs have gained popularity as a tool to go beyond the limitations of static exposure assessments based on the subject's residence. These dynamic exposure assessment methods offer high potential upside in terms of accuracy but also disadvantages in terms of cost, sample sizes, and types of data generated. Because of that, with our study we aim to understand in which cases researchers need to use GPS-based methods to guarantee the necessary accuracy in exposure assessment.

The structure of dimensions of psychopathology in normative and clinical samples: Applying causal discovery to MMPI-2-RF scales to investigate clustering of psychopathology spectra and -factors.

We applied a Bayesian Constraint-based Causal Discovery method (BCCD) to examine the hierarchical structure of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2-Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF) Restructured Clinical (RC) scales. Two different general psychopathology super spectra (-factor) scales were extracted from (1) all RC scales and (2) all RC scales except the RCd (Demoralization) scale. These -factor scales were included in separate models to investigate the structure of dimensions of psychopathology in a normative ( = 3,242) and clinical ( = 2,466) sample, as well as the combined normative/clinical sample ( = 5,708), by applying the BCCD algorithm to obtain a data-driven reconstruction of the internal hierarchical structure of the MMPI-2-RF.
