Background: Peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) has emerged as a minimally invasive percutaneous procedure addressing neuropathic pain. However, the percutaneous cylindrical lead ultrasound-guided implantation procedure requires expertise that limits widespread PNS utilization. To overcome these challenges, a microinvasive endoscopy device has very recently been developed, enhancing the precision of PNS implantation by providing accurate visualization of the targeted nerve.

Mentalizing About Dynamic Social Action Sequences Is Supported by the Cerebellum, Basal Ganglia, and Neocortex: A Meta-Analysis of Activation and Connectivity.

The posterior cerebellum and anterior basal ganglia are critical subcortical structures for learning and identifying dynamic action sequences, in concert with the neocortex. The present analysis investigates the role of action sequences during social mentalizing, termed here dynamic or sequential social mentalizing. Although the role of the cerebellum in dynamic social mentalizing was extensively investigated during the last decade, the basal ganglia were long ignored.

Clinical utility of the Fibrosis-4 index for predicting mortality in patients with heart failure with or without metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease: a prospective cohort study.

Background: The liver-heart axis potentially influences the risk of mortality in patients with heart failure. We aimed to identify the clinical utility of the fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) index in patients with heart failure for predicting mortality in the context of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD).

Methods: Patients with heart failure and a subsample of healthy participants were enrolled in the MyoVasc study (NCT04064450) and followed for nine years.

We systematically reviewed published literature up to July 2023 on PRN-negative isolates in MEDLINE and Embase with no geographical limitations, complemented with a gray literature search.

Virtual Reality to Improve Sleep Quality in Patients Suffering from Painful Diabetic Polyneuropathy: A Proof of Concept Study.

: Sleep disturbance is often observed in the context of chronic pain. We hypothesize that, by providing an immersive Virtual Reality (VR) experience with a serious game to chronic pain patients an hour before bedtime, attention can be diverted from the pain condition, consequently leading to improved sleep quality. The aim is to evaluate the efficacy of VR compared to usual care in reducing the number of awakenings during the night and increasing sleep efficiency in patients suffering from painful diabetic polyneuropathy (PDPN).

The PET@home Toolkit: A Process Evaluation Study.

The Dutch PET@home Toolkit was developed to mitigate challenges, foster conversations, and support planning concerning pets in long-term care at home. This process evaluation study aimed to evaluate the practical application of the toolkit on four topics: (1) satisfaction; (2) relevance; (3) feasibility; and (4) integration of the PET@home Toolkit materials in home care. Outcomes may be used to improve the toolkit materials to better align with the long-term care at home setting.

The origin of water in the Earth-Moon system is a pivotal question in planetary science, particularly with the need for water resources in the race to establish lunar bases. The candidate origins of lunar water are an indigenous lunar component, solar wind water production, and the delivery of meteoritic and cometary material. Characterizing the oxygen isotopic composition of water provides information on lunar oxygen sources.

Improvement in quality of life in patients treated with lebrikizumab monotherapy is mediated by improvement in itch and sleep: Results from two Phase 3 trials in patients with moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis.

Pruritus is a hallmark symptom of atopic dermatitis (AD) and is known to worsen patients' health-related quality of life. Lebrikizumab is a high-affinity monoclonal antibody which binds IL-13, a dominant cytokine implicated in AD. This study includes data from two Phase 3 randomized controlled trials assessing the efficacy and safety of lebrikizumab in patients with moderate-to-severe AD, ADvocate1 (NCT04146363) and ADvocate2 (NCT04178967).

Phytoliths in dicotyledons occurring in North-western Europe: Establishing a baseline.

Background And Aims: The absence of a modern plant-based 'dicotyledon' phytolith reference baseline impedes the accurate interpretation of fossil phytolith records in archaeological and palaeoecological research within North-western Europe. This study aims to fill this gap by documenting and analysing the phytolith record from modern dicotyledon taxa occurring in this region.

Methods: Phytoliths were extracted from several plant parts of 117 plant specimens representing 74 species (1-2 specimens/species).

Anyone recounting the history of cognitive psychology will have to make early mention of the study of orthographic processing (starting in 1886 with the seminal work of Cattell, a doctoral student of Wilhelm Wundt); and anyone recounting the study of orthographic processing will have to make mention of Jonathan Grainger. An honorary member and former president of the European Society for Cognitive Psychology, Jonathan has dedicated nearly four decades of research to the mechanisms driving the recognition of letters, words and sentences during reading. In honour of Jonathan's career-which formally has come to a close in 2023-in this Special Issue several contemporaries and close collaborators highlight important advances that have been made in the past 40 years, and provide flavours of where the field stands today.

Introduction: Type 2 diabetes, characterized by hyperglycemia, is closely linked to obesity and low-grade inflammation. Acute cocoa flavanols (CF) intake has demonstrated benefits in vasoreactivity, cognitive functions, and antioxidant enzyme activity. However, the physiological mechanisms of CF concerning glucose uptake, inflammatory mediators, and their interplay with aerobic exercise remain unclear in populations with metabolic diseases.

Employment Quality and Self-Rated General Health in the United States: A 3-Year Observational Follow-Up Study.

Background: The typological approach of the employment quality (EQ) framework offers a comprehensive lens for assessing the heterogeneity of employment experiences while concurrently acknowledging associated health risk factors. EQ incorporates multiple employment characteristics-such as working hours, wages and benefits, and union representation, among others-where standard employment relationship (SER)-like (or high EQ) features are distinguished from nonstandard features (low EQ). Low EQ features are known to relate negatively to health outcomes.

Defining core competencies for telehealth in healthcare higher education: A Delphi study.

Background: While technology brings many opportunities for optimizing and improving health services, the lack of professionals trained in telehealth poses an important obstacle. Despite the existance of core competency frameworks for some healthcare professions, there is currently no consensus or guidelines on the core competencies that telehealth professionals should possess within the context of a higher education curriculum. This can hinder the potential benefits of healthcare service delivery.

Modelling heart rate dynamics in relation to speed and power output in sprint kayaking as a basis for training evaluation and optimisation.

With the development of power output sensors in the field of paddle sports and the ongoing advancements in dynamical analysis of exercise data, this study aims to model the measurements of external training intensity in relation to heart rate (HR) time-series during flat-water kayak sprint. Nine elite athletes performed a total of 47 interval training sessions with incremental intensity (light to (sub-) maximal effort levels). The data of HR, speed and power output were measured continuously and rating of perceived exertion and blood lactate concentration ([BLa]) were sampled at the end of each interval stage.

The Support Needs of Patients Requesting Medical Aid in Dying and Their Relatives: A Qualitative Study Using Semi-Structured Interviews and Written Narratives.

Objectives: To explore the support needs that patients and relatives experience throughout their medical aid in dying (MAID) trajectories.

Methods: A qualitative study in Belgium in 2022 using 1) semi-structured interviews with and personal written narratives of patients requesting MAID and 2) semi-structured interviews with relatives of patients requesting MAID. We performed a qualitative content analysis.

In the last three decades, ablation of atrial fibrillation (AF) has become an evidence-based safe and efficacious treatment for managing the most common cardiac arrhythmia. In 2007, the first joint expert consensus document was issued, guiding healthcare professionals involved in catheter or surgical AF ablation. Mounting research evidence and technological advances have resulted in a rapidly changing landscape in the field of catheter and surgical AF ablation, thus stressing the need for regularly updated versions of this partnership which were issued in 2012 and 2017.

Background: Physicians have significant influence on end-of-life decisions. Therefore, it is important to understand the connection between physicians' personal end-of-life care preferences and clinical practice, and whether there is congruence between what they prefer for themselves and for patients.

Aim: Study to what extent physicians believe their personal end-of-life preferences impact their clinical practice and to what extent physicians' personal treatment option preferences differ from what they prefer for their patients.
