J Oral Maxillofac Pathol

May 2020

Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics, Vokkaligara Sangha Dental College and Hospital, Bengaluru, Karnataka, India.

Introduction: Cheiloscopy and dactyloscopy have long been the most commonly used methods for forensic investigations. Orthodontists perform numerous diagnostic procedures, which include radiographs, photographs and impressions of the teeth and palate for the evaluation of malocclusion. The data recorded by them provide immense information about a patient.

Introduction: Elusive second mesiobuccal canal (MB2) in maxillary first molar are often missed during endodontic therapy and are a major cause of treatment failures. Its prevalence is known to vary among different populations and there is limited information on its prevalence in Indian population.

Aim: This study investigated the prevalence and location of second mesiobuccal (MB2) canal in mesiobuccal root of maxillary first molar using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images in an Indian population.

Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate and compare the amount of radicular peroxide penetration when various concentrations of carbamide peroxide (CP) bleaching gels (10, 15, and 35%) and a mixture of 30% hydrogen peroxide (HP) with sodium perborate are used for intracoronal bleaching.

Materials And Methods: Fifty extracted single-rooted premolars from young adults were used. The specimens were then divided into five groups such that teeth with varying sizes were equally distributed in all groups.

Purpose: Coronal leakage is an important factor contributing to the failure of endodontic treatment. The use of an efficient temporary restoration between sessions of multiple-visit pulpectomies is irrefutable. Two cements have long been used in endodontics-IRM, which is a reinforced zinc oxide cement and Cavit G, a calcium sulphate based cement.

Background: Head-and-neck infection is one of the most frequently encountered issues in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery. Most of the cases with head-and-neck infections are managed by empirical antibiotic therapy and extraction of offending infected tooth/teeth. However, long-term systemic antibiotic therapy can have profound compromising effects on host immune defense and thereby hamper healing, which, in turn, may lead to life-threatening complications such as localized septic foci or widespread septicemia at times leading to death of an individual.

Background: Thyroid hormones play a significant role in bone remodeling. However, there are few studies on the effect of these hormones on periodontium.

Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the periodontal status of hypothyroid patients on thyroxine replacement therapy.

Aim Of The Study: Bacteria that persist at the time of obturation increase the possibility of persistent apical periodontitis. An ideal sealer should be able to kill these remaining bacteria that are present on the dentinal walls as well as inside the dentinal tubules. This could be possible if a sealer has antimicrobial properties with optimum flow characteristics.

Influence of Light Energy Density, Composite Type, Composite Thickness, and Postcuring Phase on Degree of Conversion of Bulk-fill Composites.

Contemp Clin Dent

June 2018

Department of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, Faculty of Dentistry, Melaka Manipal Medical College, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal, Karnataka, India.

Context: Achieving a high degree of conversion (DC) is one of the major concerns during photopolymerization of bulk-fill composites.

Aims: To evaluate the effect of light energy densities (11.2 J/cm and 20 J/cm) on the DC and variation of DC in the 24-h postcuring of four bulk-fill composites: SDR, Venus Bulk Fill, MI FIL, and Tetric N-Ceram Bulk Fill at simulated clinically relevant filling depths.

Objectives: Aim of this clinical trial was to investigate the effect of a calcium phosphate based desensitizer paste applied prior to in-office tooth whitening on bleaching sensitivity (BS).

Methods: This crossover study was designed as randomized double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial. The desensitizer paste Teethmate AP (TAP) contains tetracalcium phosphate and dicalcium phosphate anhydrous in glycerol and polyethylene glycol, whereas placebo (PLA) is a calcium phosphate free analog.

Trigeminocardiac reflex is a sudden physiologic response due to mechanical manipulation of any of the branches of trigeminal nerve. Trigeminocardiac reflex occurs due to pressure effect or stretching of trigeminal nerve which causes fall in blood pressure and decrease in heart rate. In this reflex arc, the trigeminal nerve serves as afferent pathway and vagus nerve, which is cardio inhibitory in nature, serves as efferent pathway.

Background: As the search for reliable clinical indicators for management of human immunodeficiency virus/AIDS continues, mucocutaneous manifestations of HIV are considered among key clinical indicators for prediction of underlying degree of immunosuppression, systemic opportunistic infections, and disease progression.

Objectives: (1) To study the prevalence of mucocutaneous manifestations in HIV-seropositive patients attending the ART center of our hospital (2) To correlate mucocutaneous manifestations with CD4 cell counts.

Materials And Methods: A total of 200 HIV-seropositive patients of adult age group visiting our hospital were included in the study.

Context: Most of the adult population is colonized by Candida in their oral cavity. The process of colonization depends on several factors, including the interaction between Candida and salivary proteins. Therefore, salivary gland hypofunction may alter the oral microbiota and increase the risk for opportunistic infections, such as candidiasis.

Aims: The aim of this study was to quantify the debris extruded apically from teeth using rotary and reciprocation instrumentation systems.

Subjects And Methods: Eighty extracted human mandibular premolars with single canals and similar lengths were instrumented using ProTaper Universal (40, 06; Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland), ProTaper Next (40, 06; Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland), WaveOne (40, 06; Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland), and Reciproc (R40; VDW GmbH, Munich, Germany). Debris extruded during instrumentation was collected into preweighed Eppendorf tubes, which were then stored in an incubator at 70°C for 5 days.

Serratiopeptidase - A Cause for Spread of Infection.

J Clin Diagn Res

August 2016

Postgraduate Student, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Vokkaligara Sangha Dental College and Hospital, Bengaluru, Karnataka, India .

Serratiopeptidase is a proteolytic enzyme that has been used for reducing inflammation, it has antiedemic, analgesic, fibrinolytic and caesinolytic properties. Serratiopeptidase is often used in oral surgery for its anti-inflammatory purpose after impaction surgery, maxillofacial trauma and infections but its use should be limited in cases of abscess due to its fibrinolytic activity. Here, we report a case of a buccal space abscess which had spread into deeper muscular layers after serratiopeptidase administration in a 32-year-old male without any systemic condition.
