The zonular fibres are formed primarily of fibrillin-1, a large extracellular matrix (ECM) glycoprotein, and also contain other constituents such as LTBP-2, ADAMTSL6, MFAP-2 and EMILIN-1, amongst others. They are critical for sight, holding the crystalline lens in place and being necessary for accommodation. Zonulopathies refer to conditions in which there is a lack or disruption of zonular support to the lens and may clinically be manifested as ectopia lens (EL)-defined as subluxation of the lens outside of the pupillary plane or frank displacement (dislocation) into the vitreous or anterior segment.

Objective: This study aims to examine the reduction and subsequent recovery of routine digital screening (RDS) uptake in England from 2018 to 2022, exploring national, regional and individual Diabetic Eye Screening Programme (DESP) levels. The COVID-19 lockdown in most areas of England was from 26 March 2020 to 23 June 2020 (first national lockdown), 5 November 2020 to 2 December 2020 (second national lockdown) and 6 January 2021 to 8 March 2021 (third national lockdown).

Blindness or deafness can significantly influence sensory abilities in intact modalities, affecting communication, orientation and navigation. Explanations for why certain abilities are enhanced and others degraded include: crossmodal cortical reorganization enhances abilities by providing additional neural processing resources; and sensory processing is impaired for tasks where calibration from the normally intact sense is required for good performance. However, these explanations are often specific to tasks or modalities, not accounting for why task-dependent enhancement or degradation are observed.

Background: Traffic crashes are the leading cause of death globally for people aged 5-29 years, with 90% of mortality occurring in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The STABLE (Slashing Two-wheeled Accidents by Leveraging Eyecare) trial was designed to determine whether providing spectacles could reduce risk among young myopic motorcycle users in Vietnam.
Methods: This investigator-masked, stepped-wedge, cluster randomised naturalistic driving trial will recruit 625 students aged 18-23 years, driving ≥ 50 km/week, with ≥ 1-year driving experience and using motorcycles as their primary means of transport, in 25 clusters of 25 students in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Aim: To validate the diagnostic performance of a custom 96-micro-organism TaqMan PCR card (iCAM) for microbial keratitis (MK) from a single corneal epithelial sample.
Methods: Patients over the age of 18 referred to Cambridge University Hospital with MK were recruited in this single-site prospective cohort study between September 2021 and January 2023. An ocular-specific, customised microarray card (iCAM) was constructed according to primer and probe nucleotide sequences developed in our department to detect bacteria, viruses, and fungi commonly implicated in MK using a single corneal epithelial sample.

Charles Bonnet syndrome (CBS) is a condition characterised by visual hallucinations of varying complexity on a background of vision loss. CBS research has gained popularity only in recent decades, despite evidence dating back to 1760. Knowledge of CBS among both the patient and professional populations unfortunately remains poor, and little is known of its underlying pathophysiology.

Background: Sensory impairments can negatively affect people's quality of life and daily functioning, including anxiety and depression symptoms. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) could be an effective intervention to alleviate these, however its effectiveness compared to other interventions have not been examined. The aim of this review was to examine the effectiveness of CBT versus other interventions on anxiety and depression symptoms in people with hearing, visual, and other sensory impairments.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to provide a large, multi-center normative dataset for the Macular Integrity Assessment (MAIA) microperimeter and compare the goodness-of-fit and prediction interval calibration-error for a panel of hill-of-vision models.
Methods: Microperimetry examinations of healthy eyes from five independent study groups and one previously available dataset were included (1137 tests from 531 eyes of 432 participants [223 women and 209 men]). Linear mixed models (LMMs) were fitted to the data to obtain interpretable hill-of-vision models.

Introduction: Degeneration in choroideremia, unlike typical centripetal photoreceptor degenerations, is centred temporal to the fovea. Once the fovea is affected, the nasal visual field (temporal retina) is relatively spared, and the preferred retinal locus shifts temporally. Therefore, when reading left to right, only the right eye reads into a scotoma.
