Visual Mapping of Operating Theater Team Dynamics and Communication for Reflexive Feedback and Surgical Practice Optimization.

Ann Surg Open

September 2024

Division of Infectious Diseases and HIV Medicine, Department of Medicine, Groote Schuur Hospital, University of Cape Town, Cape Town, South Africa.

Article Synopsis
  • Effective communication and teamwork in the operating theater (OT) are crucial for successful surgical outcomes, so researchers examined OT team dynamics and infection control practices using visual methods.
  • The study involved observing gastrointestinal surgical teams, mapping communication through sociograms, and conducting focus group discussions, ultimately analyzing data through both qualitative and quantitative means.
  • Findings showed that senior surgeons impact team dynamics significantly, and highlighted the scrub nurse's role as a coordinator; inefficiencies like frequent door openings during procedures pose risks for infection control, pointing to a need for improved communication and adherence to safety protocols.

Ataxin-2 (ATXN2) is a gene implicated in spinocerebellar ataxia type II (SCA2), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and Parkinsonism. The encoded protein is a therapeutic target for ALS and related conditions. ATXN2 (or Atx2 in insects) can function in translational activation, translational repression, mRNA stability and in the assembly of mRNP-granules, a process mediated by intrinsically disordered regions (IDRs).

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the accumulation of amyloid-beta plaques and neurofibrillary tangles, leading to neuronal loss. Curcumin, a polyphenolic compound derived from Curcuma longa, has shown potential neuroprotective effects due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. This review aims to synthesize current preclinical data on the anti-neuroinflammatory mechanisms of curcumin in the context of AD, addressing its pharmacokinetics, bioavailability, and potential as a therapeutic adjunct.

Department of Biostatistics, Amrita institute of Medical Sciences, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham University, Kochi, India.

Objective Tympanometry is widely used for diagnosing Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD). However, in clinical practice, it is not uncommon to come across patients with symptoms of ETD with a normal tympanogram. Dynamic slow motion video endoscopy (DSMVE) of Eustachian tube (ET) and Eustachian tube dysfunction questionnaire-7 (ETDQ-7) are other tools to diagnose ETD.
