Background: This prospective cohort study aimed to assess whether postoperative radiotherapy could safely be omitted in women ≥ 65 years with low-risk, estrogen receptor (ER)-positive T1N0 breast cancer treated with breast-conserving surgery and adjuvant endocrine therapy.
Methods: Eligible patients were women ≥ 65 years with unifocal, non-lobular, grade 1 or 2, ER-positive, pT1N0 breast cancer treated with breast-conserving surgery and endocrine therapy for five years. Patients were followed up with mammography at least annually for 10 years.

Introduction: Infective endocarditis (IE) is a challenging diagnosis to suspect and to confirm. The purpose of this study was to clarify how often IE is suspected already on hospital admission, which clinical signs trigger the physicians' suspicions and to investigate if the empirical treatment is adequate.
Methods: A retrospective observational study of cases with definitive IE, during 2018-2019 in Skåne Region, Sweden was performed.

BackgroundIn Sweden, information on seroprevalence of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) in the population, including vaccination coverage and infection, is scattered. This is largely due to the absence of a national tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) vaccination registry, scarcity of previous serological studies and use of serological methods not distinguishing between antibodies induced by vaccination and infection. Furthermore, the number of notified TBE cases in Sweden has continued to increase in recent years despite increased vaccination.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFLow anterior resection for rectal cancer often includes a diverting loop-ileostomy to avoid the severe consequences of anastomotic leakage. Reversal of the stoma is often delayed, which can incur health-care costs on different levels. The aim is to, on population basis, determine stoma-related costs, and to investigate habitual and socioeconomic factors associated to the level of cost.

Introduction: Observational studies suggest that breast conserving surgery (BCS) and radiotherapy (RT) offers superior survival compared to mastectomy. The aim was to compare patient and tumour characteristics in women with invasive breast cancer ≤30 mm treated with either BCS or mastectomy, and to explore the underlying reason for choosing mastectomy.
Methods: Women registered with breast cancer ≤30 mm and ≤4 positive axillary lymph nodes in the Swedish National Breast Cancer Register 2013-2016 were included.

Background: Breast angiosarcoma is a rare disease mostly observed in breast cancer (BC) patients who have previously received radiotherapy (RT). Little is known about angiosarcoma aetiology, management, and outcome. The study aim was to estimate risk and to characterize breast angiosarcoma in a Swedish population-based cohort.

Background: Early and late readmissions after Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) are common and associated with worse outcome. A risk prediction model (TAVR-30) was recently developed using readily available clinical variables to identify patients at risk for hospital readmission within 30 days after TAVR. We performed an independent external validation of the TAVR-30 model.

Objective: To assess the efficacy of inhaled ciclesonide in reducing the duration of oxygen therapy (an indicator of time to clinical improvement) among adults hospitalised with COVID-19.
Design: Multicentre, randomised, controlled, open-label trial.
Setting: 9 hospitals (3 academic hospitals and 6 non-academic hospitals) in Sweden between 1 June 2020 and 17 May 2021.

Background: Balanced transfusions, including platelets, are critical for bleeding patients to maintain hemostasis. Many rural hospitals have no or limited platelet inventory, with several hours of transport time from larger hospitals. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of using cryopreserved platelets that can be stored for years, in remote hospitals with no or limited platelet inventory.

Background And Purpose: The sex of the surgeon has been proposed to be associated with a disparity in clinical outcomes after different surgical procedures. We investigated the association between surgeon-patient sex discordance and adverse events (AEs) and surgical AEs (SAEs) within 90 days after primary total hip arthroplasty (THA). We also investigated patient-reported satisfaction with surgical outcomes 1 year after the surgery.

Background: Elevated serum chrome (sCr) and cobalt (sCo) concentrations are associated with local tissue adverse reactions to metal debris following metal-on-metal hip resurfacing (MoM-HR). Serum metal ions <2 µg/l are probably of little clinical relevance and a pragmatic "safe" threshold <5 µg/l has been suggested. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate if a careful selection of patients combined with optimal implant positioning could eliminate cases with "unsafe" serum metal ion levels.

: Antimicrobial resistance represents a serious problem, and it may be life-threatening in the case of severe hospital-acquired infections (HAI). Antibiotic abuse and multidrug resistance (MDR) have significantly increased this burden in the last decades. The aim of this study was to investigate the distribution and susceptibility rates of five selected bacterial species (, , , and ) in two healthcare settings located in the Apulia region (Italy).

Purpose: To investigate if molecular subtype is associated with outcome in stage 1 breast cancer (BC).
Methods: Tissue samples from 445 women with node-negative BC ≤ 15 mm, treated in 1986-2004, were classified into surrogate molecular subtypes [Luminal A-like, Luminal B-like (HER2-), HER2-positive, and triple negative breast cancer (TNBC)]. Information on treatment, recurrences, and survival were gathered from medical records.

Purpose: Adjuvant radiotherapy (RT) for breast cancer is associated with an increased risk of ischemic heart disease. We examined the risk of coronary artery stenosis in a large cohort of women with breast cancer receiving adjuvant RT.
Methods: A cohort of women diagnosed with breast cancer between 1992 and 2012 in three Swedish health care regions (n = 57,066) were linked to the Swedish Coronary Angiography and Angioplasty Registry (SCAAR) to identify women receiving RT who subsequently underwent a percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) due to coronary stenosis.

Purpose: Few data are available regarding the influence of adjuvant capecitabine on long-term survival of patients with early breast cancer.
Methods: The Finland Capecitabine Trial (FinXX) is a randomized, open-label, multicenter trial that evaluates integration of capecitabine to an adjuvant chemotherapy regimen containing a taxane and an anthracycline for the treatment of early breast cancer. Between January 27, 2004, and May 29, 2007, 1,500 patients with axillary node-positive or high-risk node-negative early breast cancer were accrued.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare 99mTc-HMPAO-WBC-SPECT/CT combined with 99mTc-nanocollloid SPECT/CT and 18F-FDG-WBC-PET/CT combined with 99mTc-Nanocollloid SPECT/CT for the diagnosis and treatment evaluation of chronic prosthetic joint infection (PJI).
Methods: Patients with suspected chronic PJI were examined with 99mTc-HMPAO-WBC SPECT/CT, 18F-FDG-WBC PET/CT, and 99mTc-nanocolloid SPECT/CT (to visualize bone marrow). The location and patterns of uptake were noted and compared between the two leukocyte examinations.
