Estimates of post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC) incidence, also known as Long COVID, have varied across studies and changed over time. We estimated PASC incidence among adult and pediatric populations in three nationwide research networks of electronic health records (EHR) participating in the RECOVER Initiative using different classification algorithms (computable phenotypes). Overall, 7% of children and 8.

Educational strategies that allow students to experience patient care in both rural and urban settings are imperative to the recruitment and retention of nurses for medically underserved populations or health professional shortage areas. Two state schools of nursing (one urban-oriented and one rural-oriented) in the Mid-Atlantic region were awarded Health Resources and Service Administration (HRSA) project funding to educate nursing students and registered nurses in community-based primary care settings. This article will discuss an innovative rural-urban baccalaureate nursing student exchange model intended to increase understanding of enhanced RN roles in community-based primary care settings.

Aging adults experience increased health vulnerability and compromised abilities to cope with stressors, which are the clinical manifestations of frailty. Frailty is complex, and efforts to identify biomarkers to detect frailty and pre-frailty in the clinical setting are rarely reproduced across cohorts. We developed a predictive model incorporating biological and clinical frailty measures to identify robust biomarkers across data sets.

Background: Post-intensive care syndrome (PICS) affects 25% to 50% of adults who survive an intensive care unit (ICU) stay. Although the compounding of PICS impairments (cognitive, physical, and psychological) could intensify the syndrome, research on relationships among impairments is limited, particularly in patients with delirium.
Objectives: To examine associations among PICS impairments and examine delirium status and its relationship to PICS impairments at ICU discharge and 1 month later.

Background: Previous systematic reviews have explored nurse, patient, and organizational outcomes in Magnet®-recognized hospitals compared with non-Magnet hospitals, yet these did not comprehensively review a wide variety of patient outcomes.
Aim: The purpose of this scoping review was to describe the findings from published research evaluating patient outcomes in Magnet-recognized hospitals compared with non-Magnet hospitals.
Methods: A medical librarian conducted a systematic search for published peer-reviewed, English-language literature and a search of the reference lists for retrieved publications to identify articles addressing Magnet compared with non-Magnet hospitals related to patient outcomes.

In 2021 the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) published new education standards for nursing programs offering degrees at the baccalaureate-level and higher. The new standards, The Essentials: Core Competencies for Professional Nursing Education (AACN, 2021), represent an educational shift and an opportunity to transform the nursing profession through a better-prepared workforce. One important new standard that must be incorporated for entry-level (Level 1) programs is preparation for practice within four spheres of care.

To evaluate the validity of the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) for screening during the perinatal period in the United States and concerns regarding its acceptability and performance. We conducted a systematic search in OVID MEDLINE, EMBASE (OVID), Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), and PsycInfo (EBSCO) for articles published from inception of the database through February 2023. We included primary quantitative and qualitative studies on the validation of the EPDS in the United States and identified 880 articles of which 9 met criteria for inclusion.

Background: Evidence-based practice and decision-making have been consistently linked to improved quality of care, patient safety, and many positive clinical outcomes in isolated reports throughout the literature. However, a comprehensive summary and review of the extent and type of evidence-based practices (EBPs) and their associated outcomes across clinical settings are lacking.
Aims: The purpose of this scoping review was to provide a thorough summary of published literature on the implementation of EBPs on patient outcomes in healthcare settings.

Lung and breast cancer are the two most common causes of malignant pleural effusion (MPE). MPE diagnosis plays a crucial role in determining staging and therapeutic interventions in these cancers. However, our understanding of the pathogenesis and progression of MPE at the molecular level is limited.

Prenatal antidepressant exposure has been associated with increased risk for neurodevelopmental disorders in childhood, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The current study utilized multi-cohort data from the Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) program (N = 3129) to test for this association, and determine whether the association remained after adjusting for maternal prenatal depression and other potential confounders. Antidepressants and a subset of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) were examined in relation to binary (e.

Background: Approval of simulation in substitution of traditional clinical hours increased in nursing programs during the COVID-19 pandemic, yet these temporary and inconsistent between states. Variability and a return to "pre-pandemic" limits on simulation use amplify questions about consistency of learner outcomes.
Methods: Boards of Nursing (BONs) of the United States and District of Columbia (DC) were queried to verify accuracy of simulation regulations posted on the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL) regulatory map and to identify factors contributing to regulatory changes.

Nurse burnout is a threat to safe, efficient health care delivery, yet estimated rates of nurse burnout are above 40 %. A critical step in reducing burnout is identifying phenomena that are amenable to intervention. Loneliness may be one such factor, yet the relationship between loneliness and burnout is not clearly described.

Background: Despite rapid growth in the popularity of smartwatches, evidence lacks regarding older adults' acceptance of smartwatches. Since most wearable sensors are not designed specifically for older adults, there is a need to examine wearability and usability challenges of wearable sensing devices faced by older adults to facilitate the use of objective measurements of health and mobility.
Objectives: We aimed to examine older adults' perceptions of GPS-enabled smartwatches and to identify potential barriers and facilitators of smartwatch and sensor data use.
Objective: Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) is a common component of antiretroviral therapy in hepatitis B virus (HBV)-HIV co-infected adults but few studies have evaluated worsening renal function and bone turnover, known effects of TDF.
Methods: Adults from eight North American sites were enrolled in this cohort study. Research assessments were conducted at entry and every 24 weeks for ≤192 weeks.

Increased attention on home visitation as a strategy to reduce child maltreatment and increased funding to support home visitation programs has led to their rapid and widespread adoption in the United States and internationally. The rapid adoption of home visitation programs has occurred without an adequate understanding of the underlying mechanisms of influence on child maltreatment. Consequently, there is a lack of consistency in structures and processes across programs.

Neonates born to mothers taking opioids during pregnancy are at risk for neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS), for which there is no recognized standard approach to care. Nonpharmacologic treatment is typically used as a first-line approach for management, and pharmacologic treatment is added when clinical signs are not responding to nonpharmacologic measures alone. Although morphine and methadone are the most commonly used pharmacotherapies for NOWS, buprenorphine has emerged as a treatment option based on its pharmacologic profile and results from initial single site clinical trials.
