Background: The dystonias are phenotypically and etiologically heterogenous disorders. Many proposals and a consensus recommendation have been provided for the diagnosis and classification of the dystonias, but these recommendations serve only as general guidelines. Current diagnosis and classification may still depend on clinical judgment causing different opinions.

Validity evidence for an instrument for cognitive load for virtual didactic sessions.

Background: COVID necessitated the shift to virtual resident instruction. The challenge of learning via virtual modalities has the potential to increase cognitive load. It is important for educators to reduce cognitive load to optimize learning, yet there are few available tools to measure cognitive load.

Antimuscarinic Anticholinergic Medications in Parkinson Disease: To Prescribe or Deprescribe?

The relative importance of antimuscarinic anticholinergic medications for Parkinson's disease (PD) declined after the introduction of levodopa, such that anticholinergic medications are now much more likely to be prescribed for clinical indications other than parkinsonism. Recent studies have found an association between anticholinergic medication exposure and future risk of dementia in older individuals and those with PD. These findings provide a further reason to avoid the use of anticholinergic medications to treat motor symptoms of PD.

Background: The economic impacts of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have drastically increased food insecurity in the United States. Initial data, collected a few months into the pandemic, showed that families, particularly those experiencing food insecurity, reported detrimental changes to their home food environment and parent feeding practices, compared to before COVID-19.

Objective: This follow-up study obtained longitudinal data from a sample of parents in the United States to quantify changes in food security status, the home food environment, and parent feeding practices, from before to across COVID-19 as the pandemic continued to persist.

Interventions for improving employment outcomes for persons with autism spectrum disorders: A systematic review update.

Background: The incidence of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) is on the rise. Currently, 1 in 59 children are identified with ASD in the United States. ASD refers to a range of neurological disorders that involve some degree of difficulty with communication and interpersonal relationships.

Background: Huntington disease (HD) is an inherited neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor, psychiatric, and cognitive symptoms. Little is known about the effects of environmental factors on HD symptom onset and severity.

The dose of busulfan used in this protocol is variable across studies and centers. The minimum dose that maintains long-term donor chimerism is not well established.

As human-induced change eliminates natural habitats, it impacts genetic diversity and population connectivity for local biodiversity. The South African Cape Floristic Region (CFR) is the most diverse extratropical area for plant biodiversity, and much of its habitat is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site. There has long been great interest in explaining the underlying factors driving this unique diversity, especially as much of the CFR is endangered by urbanization and other anthropogenic activity.

Post-traumatic stress and stress disorders during the COVID-19 pandemic: Survey of emergency physicians.

Objective: Emergency physicians routinely encounter stressful clinical situations, including treating victims of crime, violence, and trauma; facing the deaths of patients; and delivering bad news. During a pandemic, stress may be increased for healthcare workers. This study was undertaken to identify symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among emergency physicians during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

Using motivational interviewing to enhance emerging adults' engagement in weight loss: The Live Well RVA pilot randomized clinical trial.

Background: Emerging adults (ages 18-25) are at high risk for overweight/obesity, yet traditional adult behavioural weight loss (BWL) interventions do not meet the needs of individuals at this developmental stage. Motivational interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based approach to promote behaviour change but has not been tested for weight loss in this population. The study aimed to test the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of an MI-enhanced weight loss programme to promote engagement, retention and weight loss in emerging adults.

Bergmann's rule is followed at multiple stages of postembryonic development in a long-distance migratory songbird.

Bergmann's rule is a well-established, ecogeographical principle that states that body size varies positively with latitude, reflecting the thermoregulatory benefits of larger bodies as temperatures decline. However, this principle does not seem to easily apply to migratory species that are able to avoid the extreme temperatures during winter at higher latitudes. Further, little is known about the ontogeny of this relationship across life stages or how it is influenced by ongoing global climate change.

Nanoscale visualization of extracellular DNA on cell surfaces.

Nanoscale analysis of extracellular DNA (eDNA) that is present on the surface of cells in trace biological samples can provide insight into the understanding of DNA transfer through touch, and thereby, the role of eDNA is a biologically and forensically relevant phenomenon. While various bulk scale tools and DNA analysis can be used to quantitatively obtain this information, obtaining a three dimensional (3D) visualization of the eDNA can provide a unique look into the spatial and temporal dynamics at the cellular level. In this study, we show how atomic force microscopy (AFM) can be integrated with optical microscopy to visualize the distribution of surface associate eDNA at a single cell level.

Motivation for weight loss and association with outcomes in a lifestyle intervention: comparing emerging adults to middle aged adults.

Background: Emerging adults (EAs) ages 18-25 are at high risk for overweight/obesity, but little is known about their motivations for weight loss or how these may differ from those of middle aged adults (MAs) and relate to treatment outcomes.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine potential differences in weight loss motivations between EAs and MAs and determine the association between motivation and engagement/outcomes in a weight loss trial.

Methods: Data were pooled from two behavioural weight loss interventions: one targeting EAs ( = 52) and one targeting MAs ages 40-60 ( = 101).

Contributions of organic and inorganic matter to sediment volume and accretion in tidal wetlands at steady state.

A mixing model derived from first principles describes the bulk density (BD) of intertidal wetland sediments as a function of loss on ignition (LOI). The model assumes that the bulk volume of sediment equates to the sum of self-packing volumes of organic and mineral components or BD = 1/[LOI/k + (1-LOI)/k], where k and k are the self-packing densities of the pure organic and inorganic components, respectively. The model explained 78% of the variability in total BD when fitted to 5075 measurements drawn from 33 wetlands distributed around the conterminous United States.
