As the COVID-19 pandemic winds down, clinical and public health laboratories, along with industry partners, reflect on the successes and failures of the pandemic response. To capture the lessons learned and better prepare for the next pandemic, the Clinical Microbiology Open (CMO) assembled key stakeholders including directors of clinical laboratories, industry partners, and state and federal agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration. Participants were asked to provide their perspectives on the initial pandemic response, supply chain constraints especially during surges, staffing challenges, test triage and communication strategies, clinical informatics needs, laboratory financial impacts of SARS-CoV-2 testing, and the emergency use authorization process.

Patients from minoritized backgrounds based on race/ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and other social identities are more likely to experience inequities in access in kidney transplantation. Although these inequities have been reported over the decades, limited research focuses on the experiences of patients with intersecting minoritized social statuses and the mechanisms that contribute to their reduced access to transplantation. Intersectionality, a framework for understanding the ways in which multiple social identities represent interacting systems of oppression and privilege, offers a nuanced approach for understanding the experiences of patients diagnosed with end-stage organ disease with intersecting social identities.

There are several treatment options, including both operative and non-operative modalities. Current literature is largely focused broadly on patellar tendinopathy; however, there are few studies which specifically evaluate treatment outcomes for PPTTs.

New treatments have increased survival of patients with melanoma, and methods to monitor patients throughout the disease process are needed. Circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) is a predictive and prognostic biomarker that may allow routine, real-time monitoring of disease status. We surveyed 44 US physicians to understand their preferences and practice patterns for biomarker and ctDNA testing in their patients with melanoma.

This article will discuss diagnostic stewardship from the perspective of those who are just starting, or have recently started, a diagnostic stewardship effort. This document will provide guidance on how to identify opportunities for intervention and tools that can be used to affect change. Specifically, we will discuss key components of a diagnostic stewardship committee, referral laboratory testing, prior authorization, miscellaneous test orders, establishing a laboratory test formulary, and conclude with some specific examples of interventions that can be considered.

There are limited data available on clinical outcomes after stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) for nonspinal bone metastases. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to characterize local control (LC), overall survival (OS), pain response rates, and toxicity after SBRT. The primary outcomes were 1-year LC, incidence of acute and late grade 3 to 5 toxicities, and overall pain response rate at 3 months.

The conventional dose of 10 units of intravenous (IV) regular insulin to treat hyperkalemia has been associated with hypoglycemia. There have been retrospective studies evaluating weight-based dose vs conventional dose of IV regular insulin but the comparative efficacy and safety is not well established. : Evaluate the difference in weight-based dosing of IV regular insulin between patients who experienced hypoglycemia vs.

Peripheral ameloblastoma (PA) is a rare variant of ameloblastoma that presents as a slow-growing, painless mass in the gingival tissues or alveolar mucosa. It shares histologic features with conventional ameloblastoma but is less invasive and aggressive. This case report describes a 51-year-old female with a PA that simultaneously or subsequently developed underlying squamous cell papilloma after mandibular third molar extraction.

Chronic pain (CP) affects over 50 million Americans daily and represents a unique challenge for healthcare professionals due to its complexity. Across all health professions, only a small percentage of the curriculum is devoted to treating patients with CP. Unfortunately, much of the content is delivered passively via lecture without giving students an opportunity to practice the communication skills to effectively treat patients in the clinic.

Avoidance of early formula feeding (EFF) and advancement of mother's own milk (MOM) in very low birth weight (VLBW) infants are important health influencers to decrease serious morbidities. To present the challenges and feeding strategy successes implemented to counteract a decline in MOM at discharge after initiation of donor milk (DM) to avoid EFF in racially and ethnically diverse VLBW infants. Retrospective review of prospectively tracked inborn surviving VLBW infants and their mothers admitted to neonatal intensive care unit from 2010 to 2020 during three feeding strategy implementations baby friendly (BF), DM program, and MOM bundle.

Purpose: To use the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) database to identify risk factors for 30-day adverse events and hospital readmission following isolated and unilateral meniscectomy or meniscus repair.
Methods: A retrospective review of the NSQIP database from the years 2012 to 2021 identified all patients undergoing isolated, unilateral meniscectomy or meniscus repair. Multivariable analyses were performed for each procedure to identify patient characteristics associated with any adverse event (AAE) or unplanned hospital readmission within 30 days of surgery.

Purpose: The objective of this study was to quantify early radiation therapy (RT)-induced cardiac and aortic changes in patients with lung cancer using cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
Methods And Materials: Nine patients with lung cancer treated with RT completed MR scans at baseline (before RT) and at 3 and 6 months after RT completion. Cine, T1/T2, late gadolinium enhancement (LGE), and 4-dimensional flow MRIs were acquired to assess biological and mechanical cardiovascular changes globally (ie, over the entire left ventricle (LV) or aorta) and regionally (according to an American Heart Association model).
