Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is an ultrasensitive spectroscopic technique that generates signal-enhanced fingerprint vibrational spectra of small molecules. However, without rigorous control of SERS substrate active sites, geometry, surface area, or surface functionality, SERS is notoriously irreproducible, complicating the consistent quantitative analysis of small molecules. While evaporatively prepared samples yield significant SERS enhancement resulting in lower detection limits, the distribution of these enhancements along the SERS surface is inherently stochastic.

Peer teaching is used in many medical schools and is recognized as beneficial to the student teacher and learner. We surveyed a cohort of teaching assistants (TAs) in a first-year course to determine their motivations to serve as TAs and the perceived benefits. TAs served because they wanted to help, solidify their knowledge, and have an opportunity to teach.

Objectives: Pediatric epistaxis is a multifactorial disease entity. The objective of this study is to determine the socioeconomic and air-quality contributions to pediatric epistaxis. The study also evaluates the utility of diagnostic lab work as a predictor of bleeding rates and need for operative intervention.

VVC is most commonly caused by , which, in this setting, triggers nonprotective neutrophil infiltration, aggressive local inflammation, and symptomatic disease. Despite its prevalence, little is known about the molecular mechanisms underpinning the immunopathology of this fungal infection.

Background: Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is a common condition that requires proper evaluation to select a personalized therapy. Vaginal Tactile Imaging (VTI) is a novel method to assess the biomechanical parameters of the pelvic floor.
Methods: Women with SUI were enrolled in this cross-sectional study.

Introduction: The prevalence of fatigue in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) can be as high as 50 %. Physical, mental, and psychosocial components of fatigue negatively impact quality of life (QOL), morbidity and mortality. Several tools have been developed to address fatigue, but none specifically for measuring fatigue in DM.

The prostate gland, located beneath the bladder and surrounding the proximal urethra in men, plays a vital role in reproductive physiology and sexual health. Despite its importance, the prostate is vulnerable to various pathologies, including prostatitis, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer (PCa). Osteopontin (OPN), a versatile protein involved in wound healing, inflammatory responses, and fibrotic diseases, has been implicated in all three prostate conditions.

Introduction: Simple mastectomies are routinely performed in the military health care system as gynecomastia can cause significant pain and discomfort when wearing body armor. Postoperative recovery negatively impacts personnel readiness. In this study, we sought to study time to return to duty in active duty service members who undergo surgery for gynecomastia.

Bone metastasis is a frequent and incurable consequence of advanced prostate cancer (PC). An interplay between disseminated tumor cells and heterogeneous bone resident cells in the metastatic niche initiates this process. () is a prometastatic gene expressed in multiple organs, including bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (BM-MSCs), under both physiological and pathological conditions.

Background: Challenges remain in determining the most effective treatment strategies and identifying patients who would benefit from adjuvant or neoadjuvant therapy in renal cell carcinoma. The objective of this review is to provide a comprehensive overview of biomarkers in metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) and their utility in prediction of treatment response, prognosis, and therapeutic monitoring in patients receiving systemic therapy for metastatic disease.
Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted using the PubMed database for relevant studies published between January 2017 and December 2022.

Augmented reality (AR) involves the overlay of computer-generated images onto the user's real-world visual field to modify or enhance the user's visual experience. With respect to neurosurgery, AR integrates preoperative and intraoperative imaging data to create an enriched surgical experience that has been shown to improve surgical planning, refine neuronavigation, and reduce operation time. In addition, AR has the potential to serve as a valuable training tool for neurosurgeons in a way that minimizes patient risk while facilitating comprehensive training opportunities.

Establishing intravenous (IV) access in younger patient populations via the traditional cannulation technique for procedures requiring anesthesia is often challenging. Infrared (IR) vein visualization is a modality that aids venous cannulation; however, few reports of this technique exist in the infant and toddler population. The primary aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of IR vein visualization to the standard cannulation technique for obtaining peripheral IV access in infant and toddler populations.

Neuroinflammation is associated with neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. The cytokine interleukin-12 activates signal transducer and activator of transcription 4 (Stat4), and consumption of a high-fat, high-cholesterol diet (HFD-C) and Stat4 activity are associated with inflammation, atherosclerosis, and a diabetic metabolic phenotype. In studies of in vitro hippocampal slices from control Stat4Ldlr mice fed a HFD-C diabetogenic diet, we show that Schaffer collateral-CA1 synapses exhibited larger reductions in activity-dependent, long-term potentiation (LTP) of synaptic transmission, compared to mice fed a standard diet.

Background: Significant disparity in gender distribution exists among medical specialties. Residency program websites are a main source of preliminary program information for candidates, and website content may influence a prospective applicant's sense of belongingness within a particular program. Given the importance of the residency program website as a recruiting tool, this study sought to examine and compare the presence of gendered language and imagery on residency program websites across various specialties.

Background: Whether disease burden in patients with metastatic castration-sensitive prostate cancer (mCSPC) predicts treatment outcomes is unknown. We assessed apalutamide treatment effect in TITAN patients with mCSPC by disease volume, metastasis number and timing of metastasis presentation.
Methods: These protocol-defined and post hoc analyses of the phase III randomised TITAN study evaluated clinical outcomes in patients receiving 240 mg/day apalutamide (n = 525) or placebo (n = 527) plus androgen-deprivation therapy (ADT).

Human exposure to phthalates is widespread, but assessment of variability across pregnancy has been hampered by short half-lives of phthalate biomarkers and a few repeated measures in prior studies. We aimed to characterize the variability and longitudinal profiles of phthalate and replacement biomarkers across pregnancy. Within the Human Placenta and Phthalates Study, 303 pregnant women provided urine samples at up to 8 visits across gestation.

Introduction: Following ECMO decannulation, intensivists and surgeons must consider whether to reuse the cannulation site for central venous catheters (CVC) or seek remote access. This study investigates the risk of infectious complication associated with the reuse of peripheral ECMO cannulation sites for subsequent central venous access.
Methods: A retrospective review was conducted for patients aged 0-18 years, who underwent peripheral ECMO cannulation between 2009 and 2021 at a single children's hospital.

During the planned missions to Mars, astronauts will be faced with many potential health hazards including prolonged exposure to space radiation. Ground-based studies have shown that exposure to space radiation impairs the performance of male rats in cognitive flexibility tasks which involve processes that are essential to rapidly and efficiently adapting to different situations. However, there is presently a paucity of information on the effects of space radiation on cognitive flexibility in female rodents.

Background: Training with inescapable shock (IS; uncontrollable stressor) is followed by significant decreases in rapid eye movement sleep (REM). However, controllability is important in the effects of stress. We examined the effects of escapable shock (ES; controllable stressor) on sleep and whether the central nucleus of the amygdala (CNA) plays a role in regulating these effects.

Cocaine, one of the most abused drugs worldwide, is capable of activating microglia in vitro and in vivo. Several neuroimmune pathways have been suggested to play roles in cocaine-mediated microglial activation. Previous work showed that cocaine activates microglia in a region-specific manner in the brains of self-administered mice.
