Exploring Peripartum Cannabis Use Among Young Sexual Minority People: A Qualitative Study.

Introduction: Young childbearing sexual minority (SM) people are more likely to use cannabis and to have an unintended pregnancy than their heterosexual peers; however, little is known about their perceptions and experiences of peripartum cannabis use. This qualitative study explores the relationships young pregnant and parenting SM people have with cannabis, as well as their feelings and opinions about prenatal cannabis use.

Method: Participants who identified as SM from baseline surveys of the YoungMoms study were recruited for semi-structured qualitative interviews (n = 13).

Atmospheric Deposition of Microplastics in South Central Appalachia in the United States.

Due to the increased prevalence of plastic pollution globally, atmospheric deposition of microplastics (MPs) is a significant issue that needs to be better understood to identify potential consequences for human health. This study is the first to quantify and characterize atmospheric MP deposition in the Eastern United States. Passive sampling was conducted at two locations within the Eastern United States, specifically in remote South Central Appalachia, from March to September 2023.

Artificial womb technology - A more physiologic solution to treating extreme prematurity.

Treatment of extreme premature infants (EPI) is limited by developmental immaturity primarily of the lung. A paradigm shift towards a more physiologic treatment of EPI as fetal neonates or , by keeping them in a womb-like environment to allow continued organ maturation, is the rationale for artificial womb technology. In this review, we discuss the artificial placenta and womb technology, it's rationale, the history of its development, the most recent preclinical models described in the literature and finally pertinent ethical considerations.

Water Heater Type, Temperature Setting, Operational Conditions, and Insulation Affect Ecological Niches for Growth.

Residential water heating represents an important nexus of energy/water conservation, waterborne disease, hygiene, and consumer preference. Here, we examine attributes of two off-the-shelf 151-L tank water heaters, one with hot water recirculation (recirculating) and another without recirculation (standard), compared to a tankless on-demand heater (on-demand). Energy efficiency decreased in the order on-demand > standard > continuous recirculation.

A 3D Model of the Human Lung Airway for Evaluating Permeability of Inhaled Drugs.

Current in vitro cell-based methods, relying on single cell types, have structural and functional limitations in determining lung drug permeability, which is a contributing factor affecting both local and systemic drug levels. To address this issue, we investigated a 3D human lung airway model generated using a cell culture insert, wherein primary human lung epithelial and endothelial cells were cocultured at an air-liquid interface (ALI). To ensure that the cell culture mimics the physiological and functional characteristics of airway tissue, the model was characterized by evaluating several parameters such as cellular confluency, ciliation, tight junctions, mucus-layer formation, transepithelial electrical resistance, and barrier function through assaying fluorescein isothiocyanate-dextran permeability.

There are many established evidence-based practices (EBPs) for autistic youth which facilitate wellbeing and skill development across a range of domains. However, individuals on the autism spectrum are consistently underserved in mental health settings, limiting their access to these EBPs. Positive provider attitudes toward EBPs may increase their uptake or use.

Causal language and inferences in observational rotator cuff database studies published from 2013 to 2022.

Background: The use of large multi-institutional databases in rotator cuff repair (RCR) research is expanding, but these studies are observational and cannot establish causation. This study examines the prevalence of causal language in clinical RCR database studies published from 2013 to 2022.

Methods: Administrative database and clinical registry studies on RCR published in eight orthopaedic journals from 2013 to 2022 were systematically identified and graded by two reviewers for the presence, absence, or inconsistent use of causal language in both the title/abstract and the full text.

Understanding the transmission of these pathogens in short-term acute care hospitals (STACH) is crucial for effective control. Mathematical and computational models play a key role in studying transmission but often overlook the influence of long-term care facilities (LTCFs) and the broader community on transmission.

Fine particulate matter from burning oil and gas and associated neurological symptoms among Deepwater Horizon oil spill cleanup workers.

Burning and flaring of oil and gas following the 2010 Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill generated high airborne concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM). Neurological effects of PM have been previously reported, but this relationship has received limited attention in the context of oil spills. We evaluated associations between burning-related PM and prevalence of self-reported neurological symptoms during, and 1-3 years after, the DWH disaster cleanup.

Epidemiology of diagnostic errors in pediatric emergency departments using electronic triggers.

Objectives: We applied three electronic triggers to study frequency and contributory factors of missed opportunities for improving diagnosis (MOIDs) in pediatric emergency departments (EDs): return visits within 10 days resulting in admission (Trigger 1), care escalation within 24 h of ED presentation (Trigger 2), and death within 24 h of ED visit (Trigger 3).

In this study, a new hybrid nanoparticle composed of magnesium hydroxide and copper oxide (Mg(OH)/CuO) with an optimized ratio of magnesium (Mg) to copper (Cu) was designed and incorporated into a 3D-printed scaffold made of polycaprolactone (PCL) and gelatin. These hybrid nanostructures (MCNs) were prepared using a green, solvent-free method. A patient choice-driven lifestyle intervention lowers HbA1c in type 2 diabetes: A feasibility study.

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a common metabolic disorder in which only 25% of patients meet management targets. While the primary care setting is positioned to provide lifestyle management education, studies are lacking which integrate behavior interventions in this setting utilizing clinic staff. Background: Pre-operative kidney disease was shown to impact peri-operative outcomes of endoscopic BPH surgeries. We aim to assess the effect of novel surgical techniques (Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (LEP) and Laser Vaporization of the Prostate (LVP)) compared to Transurethral Resection of Prostate (TURP), on post-operative outcomes stratified based on kidney function.

Methods: The ACS-NSQIP database was reviewed from 2008 to 2021 for 83,020 patients that underwent TURP, LEP, and LVP.

Sepsis is a leading cause of death worldwide, with most patient mortality stemming from lingering immunosuppression in sepsis survivors. This is due in part to immune dysfunction resulting from monocyte exhaustion, a phenotype of reduced antigen presentation, altered CD14/CD16 inflammatory subtypes, and disrupted cytokine production. Whereas previous research demonstrated improved sepsis survival in Ticam2 mice, the contribution of TICAM2 to long-term exhaustion memory remained unknown.

Here, we recorded single-neuron activity from the human amygdala and hippocampus when neurosurgical epilepsy patients performed a one-back task using naturalistic object stimuli.

Preventing Postpartum Anxiety and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Over the Internet: An Open-Trial Pilot Study.

Anxiety disorders are the most common postpartum psychiatric conditions, yet limited research exists on the prevention of postpartum anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Postpartum anxiety leads to significant problems in both mother and child, such as maternal depression, difficulty breastfeeding, interference with parent-infant bonding, and childhood anxiety. In the current study, we tested the feasibility, acceptability, and initial efficacy of an Internet-delivered postpartum anxiety and OCD prevention program, "Preventing Postpartum Onset Distress" (P-POD), in a sample of 15 pregnant women in their third trimester.

Effectiveness of Data-Driven Gating FDG PET/CT for Abdominal Region.

This study aimed to validate the effectiveness of MotionFree (MF) in the abdominal region using 2 different PET/CT scanners to determine how to use MF efficiently. All 198 patients underwent respiratory-gated F-FDG PET/CT with MF. Imaging was performed using Discovery MI (DMI) and Discovery IQ (DIQ) PET/CT scanners, and all data were divided into 2 groups in each category (abdominal: upper and lower abdomen, lesion size, <20 mm and ≥20 mm; scanner group: DMI and DIQ).

Horse antithymocyte globulin test doses and infusion reactions in adults with aplastic anemia: A multicenter retrospective experience.

Introduction: Horse antithymocyte globulin carries a black box warning for life-threatening anaphylactic reactions, and prescribing information recommends test doses to identify patients at highest risk of this adverse effect. The predictive value of such test doses is not well validated, and practicality of use is unclear.
