Structural and Electronic Properties of Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) from Polarizable Molecular Dynamics Simulations.

Macromolecules

January 2025

Department of Biochemistry, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Virginia 24061, United States.

The environmental and economic challenges posed by the widespread use and disposal of plastics, particularly poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), require innovative solutions to mitigate their impact. Such mitigation begins with understanding physical properties of the polymer that could enable new recycling technologies. Although molecular simulations have provided valuable insights into PET interactions with various PET hydrolases, current nonpolarizable force fields neglect the electronic polarization effects inherent to PET interactions.

Ion Mobility-Assisted Free Radical-Initiated Peptide Sequencing.

Int J Mass Spectrom

February 2025

Department of Chemistry, University of Nevada, 1664 N. Virginia Street, Reno, Nevada 89557, United States.

Free radical-initiated peptide sequencing (FRIPS) is a tandem mass spectrometry technique (MS/MS) that enables radical-based dissociation on instruments only capable of collisional activation. In FRIPS, peptides are chemically-derivatized with a compound that undergoes homolytic cleavage and generates radicals upon collisional activation. These radicals then propagate through the peptide backbone enabling the sequencing of peptide ions.

DNA nanotechnology has made initial progress toward developing gene-encoded DNA origami nanoparticles (NPs) that display potential utility for future gene therapy applications. However, due to the challenges involved with gene delivery into cells including transport through the membrane, intracellular targeting, and inherent expression of nucleases along with interference from other active proteins, it can be difficult to more directly study the effect of DNA NP design on subsequent gene expression. In this work, we demonstrate an approach for studying the expression of gene-encoding DNA origami NPs without the use of cells.

January 2025

Ms. Pomaville is with Forefront Dermatology in Berwyn, Illinois; the Marquette University College of Health Sciences, PA Studies Program in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and the University of Dubuque, MSPAS Program, in Dubuque, Iowa.

Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is an inflammatory skin disease with multifactorial etiology, involving genetic and environmental factors. Many conventional therapies for SD (ie, topical antifungals, topical corticosteroids) are associated with incomplete efficacy, frequent and sometimes rapid disease recurrence, and restrictions on duration of therapy and anatomic sites of application. This may be because they cannot target multiple disease processes and/or are limited by safety considerations.

Under an adaptive hypothesis, the reciprocal influence between mutualistic plants and frugivores is expected to result in suites of matching frugivore and plant traits that structure fruit consumption. Recent work has suggested fruit traits can represent adaptations to broad groups of functionally similar frugivores, but the role of frugivore traits and within-species variation in structuring fruit consumption is less understood. To address these knowledge gaps, we assess the presence of reciprocal trait matching for the mutualistic ecological network comprising of bats that feed on and disperse seeds.

Activation parenting (AP) is a parenting construct derived from research and theory on paternal caregiving that includes behaviors that challenge children to approach novel situations, explore their environments, and take physical and socioemotional risks through a balance of encouragement and limit-setting. Although components of AP have been linked to different domains of children's self-regulation skills, comprehensive measures of AP and longitudinal research on families from low socioeconomic backgrounds are lacking. These limitations greatly constrain our understanding of the potential benefits of paternal AP for children's self-regulation development, including the maturation of inhibitory control (IC) in early childhood.

Introduction: Despite standard prevention strategies, obinutuzumab carries a significant risk of infusion-related reactions (IRRs) for patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma (CLL/SLL). Reported rates of IRRs vary in phase III clinical trials evaluating obinutuzumab-containing regimens. Although obinutuzumab has a higher rate of severe (grade 3 and higher) IRRs than rituximab, clinical risk factors predicting IRR have not been identified, and therefore strata informing patient-specific risk of IRR have not been applied in practice.
