The continuous pharmacological advances in antiretroviral treatment (ART) and the increasing understanding of HIV drug resistance has led to a change in the paradigm of ART optimization in the setting of the viral suppression of treatment-experienced patients with the emerging evidence of the effectiveness and safety of dual therapies. The aim of this study is to determine the antiviral efficacy and safety of switching to Dolutegravir + Lamivudine in people living with HIV, and to analyze the rate of patients with virologic failure (VF). A total of 200 patients were included with a median age of 51 years, 189 cells/µL of nadir CD4+, 13 years on ART and four previous ART regimens.

Sánchez Pizjuan, s/n, 41009 Seville, Spain.

Objective: The time to positivity (TTP) of blood cultures in patients with bloodstream infections (BSIs) has been considered to be a possible prognostic tool for some bacterial species. However, notable differences have been found between sampling designs and statistical methods in published studies to date, which makes it difficult to compare results or to derive reliable conclusions. Our objective was to evaluate the clinical and microbiological implications of TTP among patients with BSI caused by the most common pathogens.

UCM Digestive Diseases and CIBEREHD, Virgen Macarena-Virgen del Rocío University Hospitals, University of Sevilla, Sevilla, 41013, Spain.

There is a need, in NAFLD management, to develop non-invasive methods to detect steatohepatitis (NASH) and to predict advanced fibrosis stages. We evaluated a tool based on optical analysis of liver magnetic resonance images (MRI) as biomarkers for NASH and fibrosis detection by investigating patients with biopsy-proven NAFLD who underwent magnetic resonance (MR) protocols using 1.5T General Electric (GE) or Philips devices.

May 2016

Inter-Centre Unit of Digestive Diseases and CIBERehd, Virgen Macarena - Virgen del Rocío University Hospitals, University of Sevilla, Sevilla, Spain.

Acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) represents a reversible syndrome associated with high short-term mortality, characterized by acute decompensation in patients with chronic liver disease and extrahepatic organ failure. Diagnosis and prognosis assessment is based on a newly developed diagnostic score, the Chronic Liver Failure Consortium Organ Failure score. Susceptibility to infections and systemic inflammation are typical triggers.

Hepatitis C Virus: Current and Evolving Treatments for Genotypes 2 and 3.

Gastroenterol Clin North Am

December 2015

Unit for the Clinical Management of Digestive Diseases & CIBERehd, Virgen Macarena - Virgen del Rocio University Hospitals, Avenida Manuel Siurot, s/n, Sevilla 41017, Spain. Electronic address:

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotypes 2 and 3 have previously been classified as easy-to-treat genotypes, because sustained virologic responses (SVRs) up to 80% have been achieved with 24-week peginterferon and ribavirin. More detailed studies have shown differences between HCV genotypes 2 and 3, indicating that genotype 3 has become the most difficult-to-treat genotype. With new drugs, new challenges are emerging regarding relapse rates, the role of ribavirin, and optimal duration of therapy.

Assessing cardiovascular risk in hepatitis C: An unmet need.

World J Hepatol

September 2015

Javier Ampuero, Manuel Romero-Gómez, Intercentre Unit of Digestive Diseases, Virgen Macarena - Virgen del Rocio University Hospitals. 41013 Sevilla, Spain.

Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) is associated with significant morbidity and mortality, as a result of the progression towards cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Additionally, HCV seems to be an independent risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVD) due to its association with insulin resistance, diabetes and steatosis. HCV infection represents an initial step in the chronic inflammatory cascade, showing a direct role in altering glucose metabolism.

November 2015

Institute of Biomedicine of Seville (IBiS), Virgen del Rocío University Hospital/CSIC/University of Seville, Spain; Department of Medical Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Immunology, School of Medicine, University of Seville, Spain. Electronic address:

Experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), the experimental model for multiple sclerosis (MS), is triggered by myelin-specific Th1 and Th17 cells. The immunomodulatory activities of melatonin have been shown to be beneficial under several conditions in which the immune system is exacerbated. Here, we sought to elucidate the basis of the melatonin protective effect on EAE by characterizing the T effector/regulatory responses, particularly those of the memory cell subsets.
