Childhood obesity has reached epidemic levels in developed countries and is becoming a major cause for concern in the developing world. The causes of childhood obesity are complex and multifactorial, involving the interaction between individual genetics and environmental and developmental factors. Among the environmental factors, there is a growing interest in understanding the possible relationship between the so-called environmental obesogens and the development of obesity in children.

Complications of Hirschsprung's disease's surgery include the general complications of any abdominal surgery, but one of the specific complications is obstruction, which occurs in 10% of children after surgical correction and can be due to a narrowing muscular cuff or a coloanal anastomotic stenosis. We report a case of a 4-month baby, diagnosed as suffering from Hirschsprung's disease, who developed postoperative constipation after transanal endorectal pull-through due to unusual folding of the muscular cuff, which narrowed the colon. A laparoscopic approach was performed.

Article Synopsis
  • - A clinical trial examined the effects of four different mouthwashes on the salivary viral load of SARS-CoV-2 in COVID-19 patients, assessing both viral presence and infectivity.
  • - The study found that none of the mouthwashes significantly impacted the viral load; however, one ingredient, cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), showed a temporary reduction in viral infectivity one hour after use.
  • - Results suggest that many mouthwashes may be ineffective at reducing viral transmission immediately, leading to a false sense of security among users.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the effectiveness of a specific needle electrolysis protocol (5 mA for 25 seconds) in reducing bacterial infections in mammary fistulas, although its therapeutic impact is still theoretical.
  • - In experiments involving Staphylococcus aureus, the standard protocol achieved a significant reduction of 5 log CFU/mL in bacterial counts compared to a control group after 24 hours.
  • - Modifications in needle gauge did not affect the antibacterial outcome, but increasing the current intensity or total dosage improved the bactericidal effect, indicating that these parameters are crucial for optimizing treatment.

Rare variants affecting host defense against pathogens could be involved in COVID-19 severity and may help explain fatal outcomes in young and middle-aged patients. Our aim was to report the presence of rare genetic variants in certain genes, by using whole exome sequencing, in a selected group of COVID-19 patients under 65 years who required intubation or resulting in death (n = 44). To this end, different etiopathogenic mechanisms were explored using gene prioritization-based analysis in which genes involved in immune response, immunodeficiencies or blood coagulation were studied.

Article Synopsis
  • Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), especially various bisphenols like BPA, can interfere with normal bodily functions and may pose a risk to public health.
  • This study investigated the relationship between maternal urinary BPA levels during pregnancy and DNA methylation in newborns, using a sample of 318 mother-child pairs from the NELA birth cohort.
  • Findings suggest that higher BPA exposure, particularly in the 24th week of pregnancy, is linked to increased LINE-1 methylation in newborns, especially boys, but the overall impact on global DNA methylation appears minimal and uncertain in biological significance.

Haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in pediatric and adolescent patients: A study of the Spanish hematopoietic stem cell transplantation group (GETH).

Med Clin (Barc)

November 2022

La Paz University Hospital, Madrid, Spain; La Paz Health Research Institute, IdiPAZ, La Paz University Hospital, Madrid, Spain; Faculty of Medicine, Autonomous University of Madrid, Spain. Electronic address:

Introduction: The main advantages of haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (haplo-HSCT) are the immediate availability of donors, the possibility of developing cell therapy approaches with different novel transplant platforms, and the procedure's cost savings.

Methodology: We retrospectively analyzed the pediatric haplo-HSCT activity of the Spanish hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation group (GETH) between 1999 and 2016, aiming to study clinical characteristics and outcomes by describing patient groups with non-malignant disease (NMD) or malignant disease (MD) and the impact of 2 different periods (1999-2009 and 2010-2016) on long-term outcomes.

Results: Twelve centers performed 232 haplo-HSCTs in 227 children, representing 10% of all pediatric allogeneic HSCT activity in Spain from 1999 to 2016, with a notable increase since 2013.

In Brugada syndrome, even within the same family where all affected individuals share the same mutation, phenotypic variation is prominent, with variable penetrance and expressivity, presenting different degrees of involvement. It is difficult to establish a direct correlation between genotype and phenotype to predict prognosis in complications and risk of sudden death. The factors that modulate this inter- and intra-familial phenotypic variability remain to be determined.

The Sagittal Integral Morphotype in Male and Female Rowers.

Int J Environ Res Public Health

December 2021

Sports and Musculoskeletal System Research Group (RAQUIS), University of Murcia, 30100 Murcia, Spain.

The goal of this study was to describe the integrated spinal assessment of the sagittal morphotype in rowers to determine whether the intense practice of rowing causes a modification of the sagittal curvatures of the spine, its relationship with the rowing technique, and training background. The second goal was to analyse how the dorsal and lumbar curves behave in the three phases of the rowing gesture, and to determine which phases can be detrimental to the correct development of the spine during growth. We analysed the spine curvatures in the sagittal plane of 29 females and 82 males, which were measured with an inclinometer in standing, slump sitting, maximal trunk flexion and during rowing performance.

Percutaneous needle electrolysis (PNE) is a physiotherapy technique that has been shown to be effective in different pathologies such as tendinopathies or mammary fistula. For many years, theoretical bactericidal and germicidal effects have been attributed to this type of galvanic currents, partly explained by the changes in pH that it generates. However, these effects have not yet been demonstrated.
