Background: Diarrhoeal diseases claim more than 1 million lives annually and are a leading cause of death in children younger than 5 years. Comprehensive global estimates of the diarrhoeal disease burden for specific age groups of children younger than 5 years are scarce, and the burden in children older than 5 years and in adults is also understudied. We used results from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to assess the burden of, and trends in, diarrhoeal diseases overall and attributable to 13 pathogens, as well as the contributions of associated risk factors, in children and adults in 204 countries and territories from 1990 to 2021.

Sustained lymphocyte migration from blood into lymph nodes (LNs) is important for immune responses. The CC-chemokine receptor-7 (CCR7) ligand CCL21 is required for LN entry but is downregulated during inflammation, and it has been unclear how recruitment is maintained. Here, we show that the oxysterol biosynthetic enzyme cholesterol-25-hydroxylase (Ch25h) is upregulated in LN high endothelial venules during viral infection.

The alphavirus chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a serious human pathogen that can cause large-scale epidemics characterized by fever and joint pain and often resulting in chronic arthritis. Infection by alphaviruses including CHIKV and the closely related Semliki Forest virus (SFV) can induce the formation of filopodia-like intercellular long extensions (ILEs). Antibiotics are indicated for inappropriately prolonged durations not only for infectious diseases but also for non-infectious dermatologic conditions such as acne vulgaris, but inappropriate use is not uncommon. Inappropriate antibiotic prescription can contribute to the emergence of multidrug-resistant organisms, patient harm such as adverse drug events and increased healthcare costs. We experienced a case involving a late adolescent with acne vulgaris who had been treated with minocycline for more than 2 years, leading to the development of drug-induced lupus, attributed to minocycline.

Methods: Using cross-sectional data from the 2016-2021 National Health Interview Survey, we examined rates, severity, and functional limitations due to pain in respondents with liver disease (viral hepatitis, cirrhosis, and liver cancer), compared to the general population and those with other chronic conditions associated with pain (ie, arthritis, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease).
