Indocyanine green (ICG) is the FDA-approved fluorescent dye used for in vivo medical imaging, diagnostics, and photothermal therapy. However, this dye is easily degradable in the human vascular system, and therefore its stabilization is preferable. In this work, ICG molecules were stabilized by their adsorption on the surface of the L-methionine-capped Ag and Au nanoparticles (Ag and Au @LM NPs) in aqueous colloidal dispersions.

Source strength measurements are of critical importance for brachytherapy and are often performed in hospitals using well-type chambers. Quality assurance and quality control procedures should be implemented, but that may prove difficult in some hospitals due to the lack of equipment or metrological support. A study was conducted to investigate the status of the measurement equipment in Serbian hospitals and to organize an intercomparison campaign using a hospital Ir source.

Department of Molecular Biology and Endocrinology, "VINČA" Institute of Nuclear Sciences, National Institute of the Republic of Serbia, University of Belgrade, 11000 Belgrade, Serbia.

Depression is linked to changes in GABAergic inhibitory neurons, especially parvalbumin (PV) interneurons, which are susceptible to redox dysregulation. Olanzapine (Olz) is an atypical antipsychotic whose mode of action remains unclear. We determined the effect of Olz on PV-positive (+) and glutamate decarboxylase 67 (GAD67) + cell numbers in the layers of dorsal hippocampus (dHIPP) cornu ammonis (CA1-CA3) and dentate gyrus (DG) subregions in rats exposed to chronic social isolation (CSIS), which is an animal model of depression.

Zaleplon is a positive allosteric modulator of the γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptor approved for the short-term treatment of insomnia. Previous publications on zaleplon have not addressed the proteins involved in its mechanism of action but have mostly referred to behavioral or pharmacological studies. Since both GABAergic and glutamatergic signaling have been shown to regulate wakefulness and sleep, we examined the effects of prolonged zaleplon treatment (0.

Reuse and/or recycling of spent adsorbents is taking a central role in modern thinking and catalyzed carbonization is the way forward. Herein we explore the carbonization of adsorbed acetamiprid, in an inert atmosphere, as a way of recycling and producing nitrogen-rich carbon material for potential use in supercapacitors. Added value material and the reuse of the adsorbent were achieved by carbonization at 700 °C under argon.

It is well-known that the chemical composition of the host material significantly affects the spectroscopic performance of transition metal ions. However, it is worth noting that also the structure and symmetry of crystallographic sites play significant roles in transition metal ion luminescence. In this study, we demonstrate three perovskite structures of strontium titanate forming so-called Ruddlesden-Popper phases doped with Mn ions.

Noise on recorded electrocardiographic (ECG) signals may affect their clinical interpretation. Electromyographic (EMG) noise spectrally coincides with the QRS complex, which makes its removal particularly challenging. The problem of evaluating the noise-removal techniques has commonly been approached by algorithm testing on the contaminated ECG signals constructed as an additive mixture of a noise-free ECG signal and noise.

Purpose: The use of Monte Carlo (MC) simulations capable of reproducing radiobiological effects of ionising radiation on human cell lines is of great importance, especially for cases involving protons and heavier ion beams. In the latter, huge uncertainties can arise mainly related to the effects of the secondary particles produced in the beam-tissue interaction. This paper reports on a detailed MC study performed using Geant4-based approach on three cancer cell lines, the HTB-177, CRL-5876 and MCF-7, that were previously irradiated with therapeutic proton and carbon ion beams.

Department of Low and Medium Energy Physics, Institut "Jožef Stefan" (IJS), Jamova cesta 39, Ljubljana 1000, Slovenia.

The European Association of National Metrology Institutes (EURAMET) within its research programme European Metrology Programme for Innovation and Research (EMPIR) funded project EMPIR 19NET03 supportBSS that contributes to the establishment of a European Metrology Network (EMN) for Radiation Protection (RP). The EMN-RP was established in September 2021 with the intent to work as a meeting point for the metrology community and all stakeholders in the field of ionising radiation regulation, thus providing quality assurance for measurements in each of the exposure situations contemplated in the European Legislation. Within project EMPIR 19NET03, work package 3 aims at the preparation of a Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) by identifying the metrology needs to support the European legislation and regulation in Radiation Protection and of two Roadmaps for metrology services, one under the European Council Directive 2013/59/EURATOM and the other under the EURATOM Treaty.

Monodispersed polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA)/acrylic acid (AA) microgels with a tuneable negative charge and macroporous internal structure have been produced using a Lego-inspired droplet microfluidic device. The surface charge of microgels was controlled by changing the content of AA in the monomer mixture from zero (for noncharged PEGDA beads) to 4 wt%. The macroporosity of the polymer matrix was introduced by adding 20 wt% of 600-MW polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a porogen material into the monomer mixture.

The Link between miRNAs and PCKS9 in Atherosclerosis.

Curr Med Chem

October 2024

Department of Radiobiology and Molecular Genetics, VINČA Institute of Nuclear Sciences, National Institute of the Republic of Serbia, University of Belgrade, Belgrade, Serbia.

Cardiovascular disease (CDV) represents the major cause of death globally. Atherosclerosis, as the primary cause of CVD, is a chronic immune-inflammatory disorder with complex multifactorial pathophysiology encompassing oxidative stress, enhanced immune-inflammatory cascade, endothelial dysfunction, and thrombosis. An initiating event in atherosclerosis is the subendothelial accumulation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), followed by the localization of macrophages to fatty deposits on blood vessel walls, forming lipid-laden macrophages (foam cells) that secrete compounds involved in plaque formation.

Laboratory of Physics, Vinča Institute of Nuclear Sciences, National Institute of the Republic of Serbia, University of Belgrade, Mike Petrović Alasa 12-14, Belgrade, Serbia.

The widespread use of ionic liquids (ILs) as greener solvents in analytical sciences, especially in sample pretreatment, has focused attention on exploiting their enormous potential, not only on eliminating and improving the drawbacks faced by scientists. These ionic compounds with unique physicochemical properties can be tuned through smart synthesis, combining cations and anions, so that the compound exhibits excellent properties for its intended purpose. Ionic liquids are rightly referred to as designer solvents.

Faculty of Sciences, University of Novi Sad, Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry and Environmental Protection Trg Dositeja Obradovića 3 21000 Novi Sad Republic of Serbia.

5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), a Maillard reaction product, can be formed when honey is subjected to heat treatment or a long storage time, becoming volatile and toxic depending on its concentration. The fact that, until today, there is no literature data on the extraction of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from honey using ionic liquids directed the investigation of the influence of biodegradable cholinium ionic liquids on the formation of aqueous biphasic systems and the application of these systems for the extraction of HMF from honey. The influence of anions of synthesised ionic liquids on the construction of biphasic systems in which an inorganic salt was used as a salting agent was investigated.
