Histone Deacetylase Inhibitor Suberoylanilide Hydroxamic Acid Improves Energetic Status and Cardiomyogenic Differentiation of Human Dilated Myocardium-Derived Primary Mesenchymal Cells.

Background: In this study the effect of histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor suberoylanilide hydroxamic acid (SAHA) on the energetic status and cardiomyogenic differentiation of human healthy and dilated myocardium-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (hmMSC) have been investigated.

Methods: The hmMSC were isolated from the healthy and dilated post-operation heart biopsies by explant outgrowth method. Cell proliferation, HDAC activity, mitochondrial membrane potential, and level of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) were evaluated.

Use of troponin assay 99th percentile as the decision level for myocardial infarction diagnosis.

Background: The Universal Definition of Myocardial Infarction recommends the 99th percentile concentration of cardiac troponin in a normal reference population as part of the decision threshold to diagnose type 1 spontaneous myocardial infarction. Adoption of this recommendation in contemporary worldwide practice is not well known.

Methods: We performed a cohort study of 276 hospital laboratories in 31 countries participating in the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute-sponsored International Study of Comparative Health Effectiveness with Medical and Invasive Approaches trial.

Transient Ischemic Dilatation during Stress Echocardiography: An Additional Marker of Significant Myocardial Ischemia.

Aim: Left ventricular (LV) transient ischemic dilatation (TID) is not clear how it relates to inducible myocardial ischemia during stress echocardiography (SE).

Methods And Results: Eighty-eight SEs were examined from the site certification phase of the ISCHEMIA Trial. LV end-diastolic volume (EDV) and end-systolic volume (ESV) were measured at rest and peak stages and the percent change calculated.

Pain experience during saline-contrast sonohysterography differs between premenopausal and postmenopausal women.

Purpose: To evaluate whether the pain experienced during and after Saline-contrast sonohysterography (SCSH) differs between premenopausal and postmenopausal women.

Methods: Sonohysterography was performed on 133 consecutive women because of suspected endometrial pathology. Of these, 34 women were excluded for the following reasons: they had cervical stenosis; they did not complete or return a questionnaire; or tenaculum or cervical dilatators were used during the procedure.

Age-related changes in corneal thickness and endothelial characteristics.

Purpose: To determine the influence of age on central corneal thickness (CCT), endothelial cell density (ECD), average cell size, coefficient of variation in cell size, and percentage of regular hexagonal cells; and to estimate the average ECD and CCT in seven age groups.

Materials And Methods: After obtaining informed consent, 211 Caucasian patients (358 eyes) were examined using a noncontact specular microscope at the Center of Eye Diseases in Vilnius University Hospital Santariskiu Clinic. The main corneal parameters were: ECD, average cell size, coefficient of variation in cell size, percentage of regular hexagonal cells, and CCT.

Melatonin secretion in children with epilepsy.

This study examined melatonin (MLT) system in children with epilepsy. Diurnal patterns of salivary MLT, urinary metabolite 6-sulphatoxymelatonin, core body temperature, pulse and blood pressure were measured in 51 children with epilepsy (6.6-17.
