Article Synopsis
  • - The study analyzed treatment decisions for H. pylori infection in children using data from the EuroPedHp Registry, focusing on various factors influencing whether or not therapy was administered, especially regarding gastrointestinal (GI) comorbidities.
  • - Out of 1165 pediatric patients, those with GI comorbidities were significantly less likely to receive eradication treatment (only 57%) compared to those with no comorbidities (89%) despite having similar symptoms and conditions.
  • - The findings suggest that H. pylori-infected children with GI issues had a much lower chance (75% reduced) of receiving treatment, indicating no rationale for different management approaches based on GI comorbidities in pediatric patients with confirmed infections.

Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) frequently necessitates respiratory support. While non-invasive methods are typically the preferred approach, mechanical ventilation becomes necessary for patients with insufficient response. Our study aimed to compare two common respiratory support modes, volume-targeted mechanical ventilation and non-invasive ventilation continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC), using electrical impedance tomography.

Scarce data exist on double maintenance in transplant-eligible high-risk (HR) newly diagnosed multiple myeloma (NDMM) patients. This prospective phase 2 study enrolled 120 transplant-eligible NDMM patients. The treatment consisted of four cycles of ixazomib-lenalidomide-dexamethasone (IRD) induction plus autologous stem cell transplantation followed by IRD consolidation and cytogenetic risk-based maintenance therapy with lenalidomide + ixazomib (IR) for HR patients and lenalidomide (R) alone for NHR patients.

Objective: To develop a prediction model for major morbidity and endocrine dysfunction after central pancreatectomy (CP) which could help in tailoring the use of this procedure.

Background: CP is a parenchyma-sparing alternative to distal pancreatectomy for symptomatic benign and premalignant tumors in the body and neck of the pancreas CP lowers the risk of new-onset diabetes and exocrine pancreatic insufficiency compared with distal pancreatectomy but it is thought to increase the risk of short-term complications, including postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF).

Methods: International multicenter retrospective cohort study including patients from 51 centers in 19 countries (2010-2021).

On the additional risk for human health in the use of sandblasting of building walls.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

April 2023

Human Ecology Multidisciplinary Research Group, Clinic of Children's Diseases, Institute of Clinical Medicine, Vilnius University Faculty of Medicine, Antakalnio Str. 57, 10207, Vilnius, Lithuania.

In 2021, concentrations of heavy metals (Ba, Cr, Fe, Mn, Pb, Ru, Sr, Zn, Zr) and radiocesium (Cs) were measured in 13 locations in Vilnius in surface samples of walls and facades of buildings built of yellow bricks in order to evaluate possible aerosol air pollution due to sandblasting. The activity concentrations of Cs appeared there as a result of global fallout and precipitation of the products of the accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, and the concentration of Pb, as a component of road transport emissions. Other trace elements turned out to be impurities in the material of yellow bricks.
