Physicians Experiencing Intense Emotions While Seeing Their Patients: What Happens?

Objectives: Physicians often deal with emotions arising from both patients and themselves; however, management of intense emotions when they arise in the presence of patients is overlooked in research. The aim of this study is to inspect physicians' intense emotions in this context, how these emotions are displayed, coping strategies used, adjustment behaviors, and the impact of the emotional reactions on the physician-patient relationship.

Methods: A total of 127 physicians completed a self-report survey, built from a literature review.

Cardiogenic shock induced by Takotsubo cardiomyopathy: A new therapeutic option.

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TC) is characterized by the sudden onset of reversible left ventricular dysfunction, with a presentation similar to that of an acute coronary syndrome. Although cardiogenic shock is a rare occurrence in TC, if it does occur it may require the use of a left ventricular assist device. We report the use of extracorporeal life support (ECLS) in a patient with TC and refractory cardiogenic shock.

The concepts and applications of tissue engineering in otorhinolaryngology.

Introduction: Tissue engineering is a rapidly developing field that, making biological substitutes for the repair and regeneration of damaged tissues, will play an important role in the future of otorhinolaryngology.

Rusty pipe syndrome, a cause of bloody nipple discharge: case report.

Breastfeeding has universally known advantages to the mother and child that include nutritional and immunological benefits but also involve reasons of ecological and economic order. Initiation and maintenance of breastfeeding can be associated with common problems. The beginning of milk production may course with bloody nipple discharge, which, after exclusion of pathological entities, concerns a self-resolving physiological syndrome called rusty pipe.

Rhabdomyolysis as a presenting manifestation of very long-chain acyl-coenzyme a dehydrogenase deficiency.

Very long-chain acyl-coenzyme A dehydrogenase (VLCAD) deficiency (MIM 201475) is a rare inherited disorder with three forms of clinical presentation: a severe early-onset form; an intermediate form with childhood onset; and an adult-onset form, of mild severity. During adolescence and adulthood, exercise intolerance, myalgia and recurrent episodes of rhabdomyolysis are the main clinical features. The authors present a case of a 13-year old female, with severe myalgia and dark urine after prolonged exercise.

Needle in the external auditory canal: an unusual complication of inferior alveolar nerve block.

Inferior alveolar nerve block is used to anesthetize the ipsilateral mandible. The most commonly used technique is one in which the anesthetic is injected directly into the pterygomandibular space, by an intraoral approach. The fracture of the needle, although uncommon, can lead to potentially serious complications.

Conservative laparoscopic approach to a perforated pyomyoma after uterine artery embolization.

We describe a conservative laparoscopic approach to treatment of a perforated pyomyoma after uterine artery embolization. A 36-year-old woman came to our emergency department 8 weeks after undergoing uterine artery embolization. She reported painful abdominal cramps.

Outcomes from ovarian hyperstimulation following the sole administration of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone agonist in the context of in vitro fertilization: report of two cases and review of the literature.

Aim: The aim of this paper was to contribute to a better understanding of the angiogenesis in peripheral arterial disease (PAD); we evaluated the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (vegf) and angiopoietin-2 (Ang-2) in critical limb ischemia (CLI).

Methods: Skin and muscle biopsies were collected from 12 patients submitted to major amputation for CLI, proximal samples from amputation level and distal ones from the more ischemic region. Three controls were obtained from orthopedic patients.

Duodenocaval fistula as a result of a fish bone perforation.

Duodenocaval fistula is a rare and potentially lethal condition. We report a case of a 61-year-old female with a duodenocaval fistula resulting from a fish bone perforation of the duodenum who survived with conservative treatment. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of a duodenocaval fistula caused by a fish bone.

Occlusion of inferior vena cava: a singular presentation of abdominal aortic aneurysm.

Even though the majority of abdominal aortic aneurysm s(AAAs) are asymptomatic, they can occasionally manifest as a result of adjacent structures involvement. Although the most frequent venous complication of AAA is rupture into the inferior vena cava (IVC), venous compression can infrequently occur. The authors report a particularly rare case of compression and thrombosis of the IVC by AAA.
