Immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs) are characterized by dysregulated immune responses and chronic tissue inflammation. In the setting of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP4) and gut microorganisms have been proved to interplay, potentially influenced by dietary factors. This rapid review aimed to study the DPP4-gut microbiome link in IBD.

Introduction: The primary objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of nail diseases and its population in nail consultation.

Methods: A retrospective study of clinical records between 2012 and 2022 was conducted. The 1,372 established diagnoses were categorized into nosological groups, which included physical signs, infectious diseases, dermatological diseases, systemic diseases, drug reactions, occupational disorders, congenital diseases, traumatic disorders, and tumors.

Background: Adenoma detection rate (ADR) is a quality indicator set at a minimum of 25% in unselected populations by the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE). Nevertheless, a lack of pooled observational data resembling real-world practice limits support for this threshold. We aimed to perform a systematic review with meta-analysis to evaluate the pooled rates for conventional adenoma detection, polyp detection (PDR), cecal intubation, bowel preparation, and complications in population-based studies.

This study aims to provide an overview on contemporary open surgical approaches for the management of carotid artery stenosis. A comprehensive literature search was performed to identify and categorize open surgery intervention techniques for the management of carotid artery stenosis, focusing on the benefits and drawbacks of each technique. Five surgical techniques for carotid endarterectomy (CEA) have been described: CEA with primary closure, CEA with patch closure, CEA by eversion technique, CEA by modified eversion technique and CEA by partial eversion.

Microbiota therapeutics for inflammatory bowel disease: the way forward.

Lancet Gastroenterol Hepatol

May 2024

Dr Henry D Janowitz Division of Gastroenterology, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, NY, USA. Electronic address:

Microbiota therapeutics that transplant faecal material from healthy donors to people with mild-to-moderate ulcerative colitis have shown the potential to induce remission in about 30% of participants in small, phase 2 clinical trials. Despite this substantial achievement, the field needs to leverage the insights gained from these trials and progress towards phase 3 clinical trials and drug approval, while identifying the distinct clinical niche for this new therapeutic modality within inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) therapeutics. We describe the lessons that can be learned from past studies of microbiota therapeutics, from full spectrum donor stool to defined products manufactured in vitro.

Spontaneous subcapsular and perirenal hemorrhage, known as Wunderlich syndrome (WS), is a rare clinical manifestation of polyarteritis nodosa (PAN). We report a case of a 48-year-old male with a history of recurrent episodes of leg muscle tenderness and dysesthesia, bilateral flank pain, painful nodular skin lesions in the lower limbs, weight loss, and difficult-to-control arterial hypertension. The abdominopelvic computed tomography angiography showed a large left perirenal hematoma, leading to the patient's admission to the intensive care unit.

Article Synopsis
  • - Munchausen Syndrome (MS) is a severe form of factitious disorder where individuals intentionally fake or exaggerate medical symptoms for psychological reasons, making it challenging to diagnose and manage.
  • - A clinical case of a 44-year-old woman reveals the complex relationship between her chronic medical issues and psychiatric factors, which resulted in her being misdiagnosed despite multiple hospitalizations and a strong desire for surgical treatments.
  • - The case emphasizes the importance of early detection through a multidisciplinary approach involving various medical fields and Liaison Psychiatry, advocating for continuous psychiatric support to reduce self-harm behaviors while highlighting the need for more research to improve understanding and treatment of MS.

In inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), mucosal healing is the primary long-term treatment goal, encompassing both endoscopic and histological outcomes. This paper aims to overview the ability of new treatment options to promote endoscopic and histological healing and to discuss the prognostic significance of endoscopic and histological outcomes. The analysis included randomized-controlled trials (published since 2020) focused on the impact of pharmacological interventions on endoscopic and histological remission in IBD.

The Health Assessment Questionnaire Disability Index (HAQ-DI) was completed with five visual analog scales to assess systemic sclerosis (SSc) called Scleroderma HAQ (SHAQ). We performed a validation of the European Portuguese version of SHAQ for patients with SSc. Patients with different forms of SSc from five Hospital Centers were invited.

Although several devices are available for small bowel capsule endoscopy, few studies have compared their visualization quality and diagnostic yield, despite users reporting subjective differences between them. This study aims to compare two widely used systems (Mirocam MC1600 and OMOM HD). Patients who underwent OMOM HD capsule enteroscopy between August 2022 and February 2023 were prospectively included consecutively (cases).

The demand for physical medicine and rehabilitation services has risen significantly. Immediate rehabilitation is not always readily available which may compromise patients' functional recovery. Here, we describe a rare subtalar dislocation case and how an unsupervised home-based rehabilitation program allowed functional recovery.

Pathobionts, particularly subsp. (MAP) and isolates with adherence/invasive ability (AIEC) have been associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), particularly Crohn's disease (CD). This study aimed to evaluate the frequency of viable MAP and AIEC in a cohort of IBD patients.

Background: Timely stratification of Crohn's disease (CD) is essential for patients' management. The use of noninvasive accurate biomarkers is key to monitor treatment and to pursue mucosal healing, the ultimate treatment endpoint in CD.

Objective: We aimed to evaluate the performance of readily available biomarkers and develop risk matrices to predict CD progression.

Hybrid argon plasma coagulation (hAPC) is a novel technique that combines conventional argon plasma coagulation and waterjet submucosal expansion. The aims of this metanalysis were to evaluate the efficacy and safety of hAPC in the setting of Barret's esophagus (BE) ablation and as an adjunct to colonic endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR). Four electronic databases were searched, and the results were analyzed by two independent authors.

Mature lymphoid neoplasms arise de novo or by the transformation of more indolent lymphomas in a process that relies on the stepwise accumulation of genomic and transcriptomic alterations. The microenvironment and neoplastic precursor cells are heavily influenced by pro-inflammatory signaling, regulated in part by oxidative stress and inflammation. Reactive oxygen species (ROSs) are by-products of cellular metabolism able to modulate cell signaling and fate.
