This study demonstrated a novel approach to accurately estimate 5-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) in textile wastewater using a microbial consortium from food processing wastewater fixed on coconut fibers. Although glucose-glutamic acid (GGA) has been widely known as the most preferred substrates for microbial respiration, its calibration surprisingly resulted in an overestimation of BOD in textile wastewater due to its lower utilization rate compared to that of textile wastewater. After being adapted with a new nutrient environment composed of GGA and textile wastewater, the adapted packed-bed bioreactors (PBBRs) was capable of accurate estimation of BOD in textile wastewater using GGA standard solution.

Whole-cell bioreactors equipped with external physico-chemical sensors have gained attention for real-time toxicity monitoring. However, deploying these systems in practice is challenging due to potential interference from unknown wastewater constituents with liquid-contacted sensors. In this study, a novel approach using a bioreactor integrated with a non-dispersive infrared CO₂ sensor for both toxicity detection and real-time monitoring of microbial growth phases was successfully demonstrated.

In this study, shell-derived cellulose was successfully produced, and the hydrothermal method was employed to generate ZnO@C (ZOC) composites, which were then subjected to calcination in N gas at a temperature of 600 °C for varying durations. X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analyses demonstrated that the annealing duration had a substantial impact on the quantities of C and ZnO in the ZOC composites. The scanning electron microscope images indicated the presence of ZnO nanoparticles on the surface of the C phase and revealed a similar morphology among the ZOC composites.

The adsorption of small organic molecules on pristine VC MXene and its derivatives is investigated by first-principles density functional theory calculations. By employing state-of-the-art van der Waals (vdW) density functionals, the binding affinity of studied molecules, , CH, CO, and HO on MXene adsorbents is well described by more recent vdW functionals, , SCAN-rvv10. Although both CH and CO are nonpolar molecules, on pristine and oxygen-vacancy surfaces, they show a different range of adsorption energies, in which CH is more inert and has weaker binding than CO.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) represents a compelling detection methodology centered on the electromagnetic fields, commonly termed "hot spots", generated around noble nanoparticles. Nonetheless, the efficacy of electromagnetic field (EMF) amplification is constrained when utilizing individual nanoparticles. There has been a notable lack of experimental and theoretically simulated studies regarding the increase of the electromagnetic field when gold nanorods with different aspect ratios undergo self-assembly in either perpendicular or parallel orientations to substrates.

The state-of-the-art, simple and scalable methods for lignin micro-/nano-particles recovery from agricultural biomasses were evaluated in this review. Being non-wood biomasses, these materials can be easily fibrillated, supporting the usage of mild soda or organic solvent pretreatment. Different approaches in particle recovery were compared to conclude that the bottom-up approach facilitates smaller particles towards the nano-size range whereas mechanical treatment can act as a supporting method to increase uniformity and reduce particle sizes after bottom-up precipitation.

Oxidative stress, characterized by the damaging accumulation of free radicals, is associated with various diseases, including cardiovascular, neurodegenerative, and metabolic disorders. The transcription factor Nrf2 is pivotal in cellular defense against oxidative stress by regulating genes that detoxify free radicals, thus maintaining redox homeostasis and preventing cellular aging. Keap1 plays a regulatory role through its interaction with Nrf2, ensuring Nrf2 degradation under homeostatic conditions and facilitating its stabilization and nuclear translocation during oxidative stress.
