Background: Familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR) is a rare inherited disorder marked by incomplete retinal vascularization associated with exudation, neovascularization, and tractional retinal detachment. FEVR is genetically heterogeneous and is caused by variants in six genes: and In addition, the phenotypic overlap between FEVR and other disorders has been reported in patients harboring variants in other genes, such as , and .

Purpose: To identify pathogenic variants in Vietnamese pediatric patients diagnosed with FEVR and to investigate the clinical findings in correlation with each causative gene.

Polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) is a common choroidal disease in the Asian population including Vietnam and is characterized by subretinal red-orange nodules, pigmented epithelium detachment, and massive subretinal hemorrhage. The recent focus on PCV in Vietnam can be attributed to advancements in PCV diagnosis and treatment. However, there is a scarcity of published literature and clinical data on PCV in the Vietnamese population, highlighting a key knowledge gap in this region.

Diagnosis, Management, and Treatment of Vernal Keratoconjunctivitis in Asia: Recommendations From the Management of Vernal Keratoconjunctivitis in Asia Expert Working Group.

Front Med (Lausanne)

August 2022

Department of Ophthalmology, University Hospital Necker-Enfants Malades, APHP, OPHTARA, Paris, France; INSERM Unit UMRS1138, Team 17, Paris University, Paris, France.

Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is an underdiagnosed and underrecognized ocular surface disease with limited epidemiological data in Asia. It is more prevalent in warm, dry, and windy climates, and often has a substantial impact on a patient's quality of life. In rare cases, VKC can be associated with vision loss, either through corticosteroid overuse or inadequate treatment of persistent inflammation.

Article Synopsis
  • A 64-year-old man presented with a month-long right-sided headache followed by three days of vision loss in the right eye, indicating possible cavernous sinus syndrome and optic nerve issues.
  • Orbit and brain MR imaging revealed restricted diffusion in the right optic nerve, pointing to acute posterior ischaemic optic neuropathy, while angiography confirmed a carotid cavernous fistula (CCF) fed by branches from both carotid arteries.
  • Treatment involved embolizing the right cavernous sinus with coils and glue, successfully closing the fistula as shown in post-embolization imaging.

Article Synopsis
  • Myopia is a significant health issue in Southeast Asia, specifically highlighting the need for prevention and treatment strategies in Vietnam.
  • A study involving 168 eyes from 88 patients with high myopia found prevalent retinal disorders, with 70.2% showing peripapillary atrophy and 66.1% central retinal changes, particularly in those aged 19 and older.
  • High myopia (≤-8.00D) and greater axial length (≥26.5 mm) were linked to increased risk of severe ocular complications, emphasizing the importance of monitoring for retinal disorders in affected individuals.

Prcis: Combined phacoemulsification-goniosynechialysis (phaco-GSL) and unaugmented phacotrabeculectomy were both found to be effective in treating eyes with significant cataract and medically unresponsive acute primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG). Phaco-GSL seemed to be safer, with fewer surgical complications, and achieved better visual acuity than phacotrabeculectomy.

Objectives: To compare the results of combined phaco-GSL with unaugmented phacotrabeculectomy in the management of eyes with medically unresponsive acute PACG and cataract.

The treatment of symptomatic cavernous sinus dural arteriovenous fistula, an unusually occluded cavernous sinus, is by a transvenous approach through the inferior petrosal sinus and superior ophthalmic vein. If these two modes of conventional transvenous access are not possible, surgical exposure and/or direct puncture access to the superior ophthalmic vein or cavernous sinus have been previously described. In a patient with progressive ophthalmological problems, the goal of treatment is to not only cure the ophthalmic symptoms but also to conserve or improve visual acuity, so treatment is needed as soon as possible.
