Psychiatry shares most ethical issues with other branches of medicine, but also faces special challenges. The Code of Ethics of the World Psychiatric Association offers guidance, but many mental health care professionals are unaware of it and the principles it supports. Furthermore, following codes of ethics is not always sufficient to address ethical dilemmas arising from possible clashes among their principles, and from continuing changes in knowledge, culture, attitudes, and socio-economic context.

Effect of a High Linoleic Acid Diet on Pregnant Women and Their Offspring.

Nutrients

September 2024

Institute for Health and Sport, Victoria University, P.O. Box 14428, Melbourne, VIC 8001, Australia.

Nutritional intake during pregnancy can affect gestational length, fetal development, and impact postnatal growth and health in offspring. Perturbations in maternal nutrition with either an excess or deficiency in nutrients during pregnancy may have harmful effects on the offspring's development and increase the risk of developing chronic diseases later in life. In pregnancy, nutrients transfer from the mother to the fetus via the placenta.

Background: Body composition (BC) techniques, including bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIVA), nutritional ultrasound (NU), and computed tomography (CT), can detect nutritional diagnoses such as sarcopenia (Sc). Sc in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is associated with greater severity and lower survival. Our aim was to explore the correlation of BIVA, NU and functional parameters with BC at T12 level CT scans in patients with IPF but also its relationship with degree of Sc, malnutrition and mortality.

High intensity run counts-defined as the number of runs where a player reaches and maintains a speed above a certain threshold-are a popular football running statistic in sport science research. While the high intensity run number gives an insight into the volume or intensity of a player's work rate it does not give any indication about the effectiveness of their runs or whether or not they provided value to the team. To provide the missing context of value this research borrows the concept of value models from sports analytics which assign continuous values to each frame of optical tracking data.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to determine the effects of delayed carbohydrate intake after high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) on muscle glycogen levels and exercise performance.
  • Nine recreationally active men participated in a double-blind crossover study, consuming either carbohydrates or water after HIIE while keeping overall carbohydrate intake equal over 24 hours.
  • Results showed that both immediate and delayed carbohydrate intake led to similar muscle glycogen levels and molecular responses, but delaying carb intake reduced next-day exercise capacity and increased perceived effort.

Patellar tendinopathy (PT) typically affects jumping-sport athletes with functional impairments frequently observed. Alterations to the functional organization of corticomotor neurons within the motor cortex that project to working muscles are evident in some musculoskeletal conditions and linked to functional impairments. We aimed to determine if functional organization of corticomotor neuron projections differs between athletes with PT and asymptomatic controls, and if organization is associated with neuromuscular control.

August 2024

Medical Oncology Department, Virgen de la Victoria University Hospital, Instituto de Investigación Biomédica de Málaga y Plataforma en Nanomedicina-IBIMA Plataforma BIONAND, Málaga, Spain.

Background And Objective: Lung cancer stands as the main cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. With the advent of immunotherapy and the discovery of targetable oncogenic driver genes, although prognosis has changed in the last few years, survival rates remain dismal for most patients. This emphasizes the urgent need for new strategies that could enhance treatment in precision medicine.

Life and Environmental Sciences, Deakin University, 221 Burwood Highway, Melbourne, Victoria, 3125, Australia.

Through killing and instilling fear in their prey, large terrestrial carnivores shape the structure and function of ecosystems globally. Most large carnivore species have experienced severe range and population declines due to human activities, and many are now threatened with extinction. Consequently, the impacts of these predators on food webs have been diminished or lost completely from many ecosystems.

Introduction: The ketogenic diet is a very low carbohydrate diet known for its ability to reduce weight and counteract hyperglycaemia. However, ketogenic diets recommend an increased intake of fats, raising concerns about cardiometabolic risk in adults. Due to the higher intake of fats in the ketogenic diet, there is significant variability in outcomes of lipid metabolism in the population.

MacDiarmid Institute for Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology and Department of Physics, University of Auckland, Private Bag, 92019, Auckland, New Zealand.

The low-temperature liquid metals Ga-In and Ga-Sn have previously showcased >95 % selectivity towards the electrochemical reduction of CO to formate, occuring only when the alloys are melted, not solid. Here, density functional theory molecular dynamics and metadynamics simulations reveal that CO does not directly adsorb to the Ga-alloy surface, but instead is reduced indirectly by reaction with an adsorbed hydrogen. The reaction barrier is vastly more favourable when this process occurs at In or Sn sites (average: 0.
