Introduction: The standard therapy for locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) is based on neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) with fluoropyrimidines. There are different biomarkers used as prognostic factors in these tumors. Some studies advocate the use of the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) as prognostic factors in this clinical scenario.

25-hydroxyvitamin D and testosterone levels association through body mass index: A cross-sectional study of young men with obesity.

Front Endocrinol (Lausanne)

September 2022

Department of Endocrinology and Nutrition, Virgen de la Victoria University Hospital, Institute of Biomedical Research in Malaga (IBIMA), University of Malaga, Malaga, Spain.

Backgrounds: Vitamin D and testosterone deficiency have been widely related to obesity. However, only a few studies have investigated the effect of vitamin D on testosterone in the context of obesity, in which controversial results have been raised.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) and testosterone levels in young men with different grade of obesity.

New evidence for dietary fatty acids in the neutrophil traffic between the bone marrow and the peripheral blood.

Food Chem (Oxf)

December 2022

Laboratory of Cellular and Molecular Nutrition, Instituto de la Grasa, The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), 41013 Seville, Spain.

Chronic administration of a high-fat diet in mice has been established to influence the generation and trafficking of immune cells such as neutrophils in the bone marrow, the dysregulation of which may contribute to a wide range of diseases. However, no studies have tested the hypothesis that a short-term, high-fat diet could early modulate the neutrophil release from bone marrow at fasting and at postprandial in response to a high-fat meal challenge, and that the predominant type of fatty acids in dietary fats could play a role in both context conditions. Based on these premises, we aimed to establish the effects of different fats [butter, enriched in saturated fatty acids (SFAs), olive oil, enriched in monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), and olive oil supplemented with eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) acids] on neutrophil navigation from bone marrow to blood in mice.

Background: Chronic tension-type headache (CTTH) is frequently associated with a psychiatric comorbidity of depression and anxiety. Most studies focus their attention on this association, and only few link CTTH with psycho-affective emotional regulation disorders.

Objective: To evaluate the association of CTTH with anxiety, depression, positive and negative affectivity, and emotional management in CTTH patients with neither a previous diagnosis of psychiatric disorder nor use of psychoactive drugs or abuse of analgesics.

Gene expression altering epigenomic modifications such as DNA methylation, histone modification, and chromosome remodeling is crucial to regulating many biological processes. Several lifestyle factors, such as diet and natural, bioactive food compounds, such as vitamins, modify epigenetic patterns. However, epigenetic dysregulation can increase the risk of many diseases, including cancer.

Metformin, testosterone, or both in men with obesity and low testosterone: A double-blind, parallel-group, randomized controlled trial.

Metabolism

November 2022

Spanish Biomedical Research Center in Physiopathology of Obesity and Nutrition (CIBERObn), Instituto de Salud Carlos III, Madrid, Spain; Department of Endocrinology and Nutrition, Hospital Virgen de la Victoria (IBIMA), Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaga, Malaga, Spain.

Background: Men with obesity tend to be insulin resistant and often have low-normal testosterone concentrations. We conducted a clinical trial aimed to evaluate potential therapeutic strategies for low testosterone in men with obesity.

Methods: We did a 1-year, parallel, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, where we evaluated the independent and combined effects of metformin and testosterone in 106 men with obesity, aged 18-50 years, who had low levels of testosterone and no diabetes mellitus.

Article Synopsis
  • Vitamin D is crucial for body functions, particularly in calcium absorption and immune system regulation, and this study focuses on its link to recurrent acute tonsillitis in children.
  • Researchers found that children with recurrent tonsillitis had significantly lower vitamin D levels compared to healthy controls, with a Poisson regression analysis indicating that higher vitamin D levels correlated with fewer tonsillitis episodes.
  • The study concludes that vitamin D deficiency is linked to increased rates of recurrent tonsillitis and suggests that future research should explore the potential benefits of vitamin D supplementation to reduce these episodes.

Background And Aims: Arterial stiffness is linked with the development of cardiovascular and noncardiovascular diseases. In clinical practice, measurement of carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cf-PWV) has become a widely used study for the assessment of cardiovascular risk in elderly population. Our aim was to evaluate whether maintaining a healthy life, based on Mediterranean Diet (MedDiet) and regular practice of physical activity, are associated with arterial stiffness in an elderly, metabolically healthy with overweight or obesity (MHOe) population.

In the last few decades, the loss of skeletal muscle mass and function, known as sarcopenia, has significantly increased in prevalence, becoming a major global public health concern. On the other hand, the prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has also reached pandemic proportions, constituting the leading cause of hepatic fibrosis worldwide. Remarkably, while sarcopenia and NAFLD-related fibrosis are independently associated with all-cause mortality, the combination of both conditions entails a greater risk for all-cause and cardiac-specific mortality.
