Article Synopsis
  • Caregivers of stroke patients often face significant stress and may cope by disengaging from the situation.
  • A study in Spain tested an early occupational therapy intervention (EOTIPS) to see if it could help both stroke patients and their caregivers during the transition from hospital to home.
  • Results showed that caregivers who participated in EOTIPS reported a significant reduction in their burden and improved coping strategies, highlighting its potential as a valuable support tool.

Instituto de Investigación Biomédica de Málaga y Plataforma en Nanomedicina-IBIMA Plataforma Bionand, 29010 Málaga, Spain.

Recent studies point to intestinal permeability as an important factor in the establishment and development of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Tight junctions (TJs) play a major role in intestinal homeostasis. The alteration of this homeostasis is related to RA.

: Coronary artery disease (CAD) and type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are characterized by chronic low-grade inflammation. However, measuring cytokines typically involves invasive blood sampling, which can be problematic for CAD patients. This study aimed to assess ophthalmological parameters and tear cytokines in patients with CAD, comparing those with comorbid T2DM to those without to understand their inflammatory profiles.

Article Synopsis
  • Acrylate polymers and cross-polymers (ACPs) are common in cosmetics, and a study by the BSCA and CTPA aimed to assess their potential for causing allergic reactions.
  • The study involved patch testing over 1300 patients for reactions to three specific ACPs, finding very few cases of irritant or doubtful reactions, with no confirmed allergies to one of the compounds tested.
  • The overall conclusion is that sensitization to these ACPs at the concentrations tested is rare, suggesting minimal risk of dermatitis in patients already sensitive to (meth)acrylates.

Article Synopsis
  • Occupational therapy significantly aids stroke patients in regaining independence and improving their quality of life post-discharge.
  • A study in Spain assessed the Early Occupational Therapy Intervention Program (EOTIPS) with 60 stroke patients, comparing outcomes between an experimental group receiving EOTIPS and a control group.
  • Results showed that the EOTIPS group had improved quality of life, functional independence, cognitive skills, and lower depression symptoms compared to the control group.

Background: Targeted biologic therapies have revolutionised the treatment of severe atopic dermatitis (AD).

Objectives: To assess effects of dupilumab on patient re-engagement, quality of life (QOL), and burden of treatment (BOT) in severe AD.

Methods: Adults on dupilumab for AD completed questionnaires on QOL, BOT, and provided qualitative reflections, with a subset interviewed to explore experience of leaving and re-engaging with dermatology.

Ketogenic diets (KDs) are an alternative to improve strength performance and body composition in resistance training participants. The objective of this review and meta-analysis is to verify whether a ketogenic diet produces an increase in the strength of resistance-trained participants. We have evaluated the effect of the ketogenic diet in conjunction with resistance training on the strength levels in trained participants.

Breast cancer (BC) continues to pose a significant burden on global cancer-related morbidity and mortality, primarily driven by metastasis. However, the combined influence of microRNAs (miRNAs) and intratumoral microbiota on BC metastasis remains largely unexplored. In this study, we aimed to elucidate the interplay between intratumoral microbiota composition, miRNA expression profiles, and their collective influence on metastasis development in BC patients by employing 16S rRNA sequencing and qPCR methodologies.

Major head and neck surgery poses a threat to perioperative airway patency. Adverse airway events are associated with significant morbidity, potentially leading to hypoxic brain injury and even death. Following a review of the literature, recommendations regarding airway management in head and neck surgery were developed with multicenter, multidisciplinary agreement among all Irish head and neck units.

Background: The 'FAST-forward', study published in April 2020, demonstrated the effectiveness of an extremely hypofractionated radiotherapy schedule, delivering the total radiation dose in five sessions over the course of 1 week. We share our department's experience regarding patients treated with this regimen in real-world clinical settings, detailing outcomes related to short-term toxicity and efficacy.

Methods: A descriptive observational study was conducted on 160 patients diagnosed with breast cancer.

July 2024

Department of Endocrinology and Nutrition, Virgen de la Victoria University Hospital, The Biomedical Research Institute of Malaga and Platform in Nanomedicine (IBIMA BIONAND Platform), University of Malaga, 29016 Malaga, Spain.

We aimed to identify how physical activity (PA), within the context of a Mediterranean diet, affects metabolic variables and gut microbiota in older individuals with overweight/obesity and metabolic syndrome. Observational analysis was conducted as part of the PREDIMED-Plus study with 152 males and 145 females with overweight/obesity and metabolic syndrome. General assessments, anthropometric and biochemical measurements, and gut microbial 16S rRNA sequencing data were analyzed at baseline and 1-year of follow-up.

  • The study investigates the impact of high-dose vitamin D supplementation on melanoma relapse in patients who have had curatively resected cutaneous melanoma (CM).* -
  • A total of 436 patients were randomly assigned to either a vitamin D treatment group, receiving 100,000 IU monthly, or a placebo group, with follow-up lasting up to 116 months.* -
  • Results showed that while vitamin D supplementation significantly increased serum levels, it did not noticeably improve relapse-free survival or reduce melanoma-related deaths compared to the placebo group.*

Department of Radiation Oncology, GenesisCare Madrid Clinical Director, San Francisco de Asis and La Milagrosa Hospitals, National Chair of Research and Clinical Trials GenesisCare, Madrid, Spain.

Liquid biopsy is an innovative approach that provides a more complete understanding of treatment response and prognosis in monitoring metastatic prostate cancer. It complements invasive tissue biopsy and involves the assessment of various biomarkers in body fluids such as blood, semen, and urine. Liquid biopsy analyzes circulating tumor cells, extracellular vesicles, circulating tumor DNA, and the secretome.

Purpose: For primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA), there is an increasing trend towards patient-specific alignment strategies such as kinematic alignment (KA) and inverse kinematic alignment (iKA), which by restoring native joint mechanics may yield higher patient satisfaction rates. Second, the most recent Australian joint registry report describes favourable revision rates for conventionally instrumented TKA compared to technology-assisted techniques such as those using navigation, robotics or custom-cutting blocks. The aim of this technique article is to describe in detail a surgical technique for TKA that: (1) utilises the principles of iKA and (2) uses conventionally instrumented guided resections thereby avoiding the use of navigation, robotics or custom blocks.

Purpose: Restricted inverse kinematic alignment (iKA) is a contemporary alignment strategy for total knee arthroplasty (TKA), commonly performed with robotic assistance. While superior clinical results are reported for kinematic-type alignment strategies, registry data indicate no survivorship benefit for navigation or robotic assistance. This study aimed to determine the efficacy of an instrumented, restricted iKA technique for achieving patient-specific alignment.

Article Synopsis
  • Two out of eleven children diagnosed with acute hepatitis of unknown origin tested positive for rat hepatitis E virus.
  • This finding suggests that rat hepatitis E virus should be included in the possible causes when doctors are evaluating children with unexplained hepatitis.
  • The study highlights the importance of considering lesser-known viruses in the diagnosis of unexplained pediatric liver inflammation.

Background: Several studies have suggested secreted frizzled-related protein 2 (SFRP2) gene as a potential clinical biomarker in colorectal cancer (CRC). However, its diagnostic role remains unclear. In this study, we aimed to investigate the significance of SFRP2 methylation levels in a large cohort of biological specimens (including blood, adipose and colonic tissues) from patients with CRC, thereby potentially identifying new biomarker utility.
