Background: Premorbid conditions influence the outcome of acutely ill adult patients aged 80 years and over who are admitted to the ICU. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of such premorbid conditions on 6 month survival.
Methods: Prospective cohort study in 242 ICUs from 22 countries including patients 80 years or above, admitted over a 6 months period to an ICU between May 2018 and May 2019.

Background: Defibrillation is essential for achieving return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) following out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) with shockable rhythms. This study aimed to investigate if the type of defibrillator used was associated with ROSC in OHCA.
Methods And Results: This study included adult patients with OHCA from the Danish Cardiac Arrest Registry from 2016 to 2021 with at least 1 defibrillation by the emergency medical services.

Background: Arteriovenous (AV) grafts often develop severe complications of stenosis due to neointimal proliferation that occurs either at the venous anastomosis site or at the outflow receiving vein. This study compares primary patency during 12 months of follow up for a new experimental Biomodics interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) drug-eluting graft prototype with state-of-the-art GORE® ACUSEAL (ACUSEAL) in an AV graft model in sheep.
Methods And Results: An end-to-end bypass from the common carotid artery to the jugularis vein was performed bilaterally in 12 sheep.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is an incurable and progressive neurological disorder leading to deleterious motor and non-motor consequences. Presently, no pharmacological agents can prevent PD evolution or progression, while pharmacological symptomatic treatments have limited effects in certain domains and cause side effects. Identification of interventions that prevent, slow, halt or mitigate the disease is therefore pivotal.

Introduction: Atrial fibrillation is highly prevalent in patients on chronic dialysis. It is unclear whether anticoagulant therapy for stroke prevention is beneficial in these patients. Vitamin K-antagonists (VKA) remain the predominant anticoagulant choice.

Background: Morning reports are an essential component of physicians' daily work. Attending morning reports is prioritized by junior doctors as it provides them with an opportunity to learn diagnostic reasoning through discussion of cases. While teaching formats during morning reports have previously been reported, an in-depth analysis of what learning opportunities exist, e.

Introduction: Cases of major trauma in the very old (over 80 years) are increasingly common in the intensive care unit (ICU). Predicting outcome is challenging in this group of patients as chronological age is a poor marker of health and poor predictor of outcome. Increasingly, decisions are guided by the use of organ dysfunction scores of both acute conditions (e.

Objective: Adherence to antiplatelet therapy is recommended but unexplored in patients with symptomatic lower extremity peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Therefore, this study aimed to determine adherence and persistence to antiplatelet therapy in patients with PAD, defined as intermittent claudication and chronic limb threatening ischaemia.
Design: Population based nationwide cohort study.

Background: Heart failure is a global problem affecting millions of people worldwide. Current care of heart failure patients follows standard protocols and often overlooks the patients' specific needs, which leads to low compliance in the rehabilitation phase. Telerehabilitation, where the patients communicate with health care professionals about their rehabilitation program and monitor their vital signs, aims to increase the degree of compliance as well as enhancing their quality of life.

Background: Proximal humerus fracture (PHF) is a common fragility fracture in older adults and can have a substantial impact on upper limb function. Although most patients with PHF can be treated nonsurgically, it is unknown whether older adults benefit from supervised exercise therapy after PHF. Therefore, the objective of this trial was to investigate whether 10 weeks of physiotherapist-supervised exercises once a week were superior to 10 weeks of unsupervised home-based exercises in older adults with a nonsurgically treated displaced 2-part PHF.

Background: Evidence on ustekinumab safety in pregnancy is gradually expanding, but its clearance in the postnatal period is unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate ustekinumab concentrations in umbilical cord blood and rates of clearance after birth, as well as how these correlate with maternal drug concentrations, risk of infection, and developmental milestones during the first year of life.
Methods: Pregnant women with inflammatory bowel disease were prospectively recruited from 19 hospitals in Denmark and the Netherlands between 2018 and 2022.

Purpose: Ilofotase alfa is a human recombinant alkaline phosphatase with reno-protective effects that showed improved survival and reduced Major Adverse Kidney Events by 90 days (MAKE90) in sepsis-associated acute kidney injury (SA-AKI) patients. REVIVAL, was a phase-3 trial conducted to confirm its efficacy and safety.
Methods: In this international double-blinded randomized-controlled trial, SA-AKI patients were enrolled < 72 h on vasopressor and < 24 h of AKI.

The purpose of this narrative review is to provide an overview of lessons learned from experimental cardiac arrest studies, limitations, translation to clinical studies, ethical considerations and future directions. Cardiac arrest animal studies have provided valuable insights into the pathophysiology of cardiac arrest, the effects of various interventions, and the development of resuscitation techniques. However, there are limitations to animal models that should be considered when interpreting results.

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in identifying subcellular causes of male infertility, and sperm DNA fragmentation (SDF) research has been at the forefront of this focus. DNA damage can occur during spermatogenesis due to faulty chromatin compaction or excessive abortive apoptosis. It can also happen as sperm transit through the genital tract, often induced by oxidative stress.

Objective: The physiological adaptations during a normal pregnancy affect renal and thyroid function and levels of associated biochemical markers. An association between cystatin C (CysC), creatinine, and thyroid function has been considered in nonpregnant individuals but not in pregnant women specifically.
Methods: Cohort study within the North Denmark Region Pregnancy Cohort (2011-2015) with assessment of thyroid function and autoantibodies (ADVIA Centaur XPT, Siemens Healthineers) in serum residues from the early pregnancy.

Background: Surgical treatment of acute Achilles tendon rupture (ATR) lowers the risk of rerupture and may reduce calf atrophy and elongation of the Achilles tendon. The Copenhagen Achilles Rupture Treatment Algorithm (CARTA) was developed to provide individualized treatment selection based on ultrasonographic evaluation of the rupture.
Purpose: In a randomized setup, the present study aimed to investigate whether treatment selection using the CARTA could reduce atrophy and tendon elongation compared with (1) patients treated surgically and (2) patients treated nonsurgically.

Immunotherapy has shown promising results in lung cancer and melanomas; however, the responses have been poor in patients with sarcoma. Understanding the relationship between the immune system and sarcoma is essential to develop improved immunotherapy approaches. High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) has been proposed as a prognostic marker in other cancer types; however, to the best of our knowledge, the association between hs-CRP levels and mortality in patients with sarcoma has not been investigated.

Background: Persons with bronchiectasis have a high risk of community-acquired pneumonia. Social distancing measures, implemented to prevent the spreading of SARS-CoV-2, could potentially reduce the incidence of other infectious diseases.
Research Question: Was the COVID-19 lockdown period, along with accompanying social distancing measures, associated with reduced hospital admissions for community-acquired pneumonia and decreased overall mortality rates among individuals with bronchiectasis?
Methods: Social distancing measures were introduced in Denmark by 12 March 2020 and were preserved until 20 May 2020 (social distancing period), after which the measures were gradually dismissed.
