A retrospective study was conducted in Abergele and Ziquala districts in Ethiopia to investigate the occurrence, impact, and potential risk factors for abortion in small ruminants linked to a regional abortion storm. Affected (case) and nonaffected (control) villages were compared to assess infectious and noninfectious risk factors causing abortions. A case village was defined as a village with abortion seen in all households enrolled in the study, while a control village is characterized by presence of abortion in two and fewer households.

Laboratorio de Virología, Facultad de Ciencias Veterinarias (FCV), Universidad Nacional de La Plata (UNLP), 60 & 118, La Plata, Buenos Aires, Argentina; Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas (CONICET), (C1425FQB), Godoy Cruz 2290, Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires, Argentina.

SARS-CoV-2 emerged from an animal source and was then transmitted to humans, causing the COVID-19 pandemic. Since a wide range of animals are susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection, the zoonotic potential of SARS-CoV-2 increases with every new animal infected. The molecular gold standard assay for SARS-CoV-2 detection is real-time RT-PCR, where the Ct obtained is proportional to the amount of nucleic acid and can be a semi-quantitative measure of the viral load.

Intermittent hemodialysis (IHD) is an advanced adjunctive standard of care for severe acute kidney injury (AKI) and other indications. Most animals with AKI are managed medically, however, when the disease is severe, medical management may not control the consequences of the disease, and animals with a potential for renal recovery may die from the consequences of uremia before recovery has occurred. Extracorporeal therapies aid the management of AKI by expanding the window of opportunity for recovery of sufficient kidney function to become dialysis independent.

Increase of skin temperature prior to parturition in mares.

Theriogenology

September 2022

Swiss Institute of Equine Medicine, Vetsuisse Faculty University of Bern, Avenches, Switzerland. Electronic address:

Prediction of impending foaling is highly desirable as early intervention may improve mare and foal outcomes. However, monitoring the peripartum mare is a time-consuming challenge for breeders and many foaling prediction systems have limitations. "Heating up" of the mare is empirically used by breeders as a sign of upcoming parturition in mares.

Dilated cardiomyopathy in a cat with congenital hyposomatotropism.

JFMS Open Rep

March 2022

Division of Small Animal Internal Medicine, Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine, Vetsuisse Faculty University of Bern, Bern, Switzerland.

Article Synopsis
  • - A 7-month-old cat showed stunted growth, recurrent low blood sugar, and altered behavior, leading to the diagnosis of hyposomatotropism, an unusual growth hormone deficiency.
  • - MRI revealed a pituitary cyst and underdevelopment of the pituitary gland, and later evaluations indicated hormone deficiencies affecting the cat's reproductive system.
  • - The cat ultimately developed dilated cardiomyopathy, leading to heart failure and death, marking the first documented case linking DCM and hyposomatotropism in cats, similar to findings in humans.

In the early 1800s, the European roe deer () was probably extirpated from Switzerland, due to overhunting and deforestation. After a federal law was enacted in 1875 to protect lactating females and young, and limiting the hunting season, the roe deer successfully recovered and recolonized Switzerland. In this study, we use mitochondrial DNA and nuclear DNA markers to investigate the recolonization and assess contemporary genetic structure in relation to broad topographic features, in order to understand underlying ecological processes, inform future roe deer management strategies, and explore the opportunity for development of forensic traceability tools.

Rabies is a neglected zoonotic disease that causes around 59,000 deaths per year globally. In Africa, rabies virus is mostly maintained in populations of free-roaming domestic dogs (FRDD) that are predominantly owned. Characterizing the roaming behavior of FRDD can provide relevant information to understand disease spread and inform prevention and control interventions.

Article Synopsis
  • * The study assessed 15 dogs with GD by measuring plasma renin activity and serum aldosterone levels, comparing them to 10 control dogs with chronic kidney disease (CKD).
  • * Results showed that cRAAS activity was generally low in dogs with GD, regardless of their fluid volume status, suggesting that different mechanisms may be at play in fluid dysregulation for these dogs and indicating a need for further research on cRAAS blockers in treating GD.

Starvation resistance, or the ability to survive periods without food, can shed light on selection pressure imposed by food scarcity, including chances to invade new regions as a result of human transport. Surprisingly, little information is known about starvation resistance for invasive insect species. Given that native and invasive populations differ in starvation resistance, this would suggest different selection scenarios and adaptive shifts fostering invasion success.
